Have just discovered that if you enable C-state technology in the "CPU Configuration" section of the bios and set the C-state package limit setting to C6 or C7 (NOT Auto) then full power management is enabled in 10.6.1 without the need for any DSDT mods. Temps are the same as in Windows (42 degrees idle at 3.4 GHz overclocked i7 920), and the ioreg entry for ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin is identical to that for the MacPro4,1. This is great news as it allows the CPU to work with board-native power management rather than hacking with CST Method imported from MacPro4,1 DSDT

 

Credits are due to ganxiao2008 who discovered a similar change for Gigabyte X58 boards over at another forum (enable C3/C6/C7 support in this case).

 

This may well work with Core2Quads if you have these options in the bios. Try it and see!
