x11 lets you use linux apps using the X windowing system, i believe. all i know is that it lets you use the GIMP (open source photoshop of sorts) and openoffice (open source ms office alternative), among other apps. both of those are free and openoffice is much better than paying all that money for ms office.

X Windows (aka X11) is Unix-based GUI cross-platform application system that was initiated at MIT in 1984:

OS X's X11 allows one to use such X Windows applications. X Windows was somewhat popular in the academic enviroment and is connected to the free/open source software movement, but it never went mainstream. It is nice that Apple is directly supporting X11, but it really is not likely to be used by the vast majority of users.
