I managed to get OSx86 installed on my Dell Inspiron 8600. I used this method here to DD deadmoo's image onto my laptop's 2nd partition: http://www.360hacker.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=237/

I then edited the boot.ini to have C:\chain0="Mac OS X" to boot OS X on the 2nd partition. Then I tried out both OSX and XP, and both of them worked and booted successfully. The Chain0 bootloader kept on chosing my XP installation as the default boot drive (but I want OSX as default), so I went to OS X 's Preferences -> Start Up Disk -> and changed from XP to tiger-x86. Upon reboot and trying XP again, I ran into the " hal.dll file is corrupted..reinstall..etc" Did chain0 corrupt my XP's boot record? I tried fixmbr and fixboot, but neither worked. I am now reinstalling XP on the first partition on the laptop.

Has anyone been able to install OSX86 on a 2nd partition and have a bootloader select the OSX partition as default bootup devide without corrupting the XP partition?

your problem would be you went into osx and changed the default boot, which most likely screwed your mbr (not generaly considered a good thing) and probably parts of your windows. you should have changed the default in boot.ini instead, theres an easy way to do this from windows in Control panel > system > advanced > startup and recovery > Default Operating system

Well, if I set the boot.ini to select Mac OS X as default, it would go to chain0 bootloader. But the chain0 would select my windows installation as default, and boot back to windows boot.ini .... looping forever till I select something. I reinstalled windows, dd OS X again, and this time selected OS X as start up drive and everything works....weird.

so is the best way to install osx86 is to set your osx partition to active with fdisk or partition magic, save changed and reboot. insert the tiger dvd and install right?

then it should pick up the xp install and add it to the darwin loader. iam not fussy about what one it loads 1st.

ok all fixed now. thanks for the advice Hozy. i compleatly forgot to repair my MRB

even tho osx would install it didnt fix the mbr.

The darwin boot loader defaults to the active (aka. bootable) partition. So, make your OSX partition active (with fdisk), and the Dawin boot loader defaults to OSX. Additionally, this bypasses the Windows boot loader.

Thanks for the tip
