Okay, thanks to both noob and d00m! I realize I'm a bit new to all this so thank you for putting up with my incessant questions :)

I used kext utility and I came in with -v -x32 just fine. Spotlight seems to be working now, but my sound disappeared. So sound seems to be my only problem now.

which package should I run to use the update feature on my current install?

I wouldn't reccomend an update dude... if you do an update then you only have 1 shot to get everything right on your current system and if you have a serious problem on first reboot, you don't have the old Leopard system to go back to to fix things on the Snow drive.

If you have an alc889a, then try installing the 3 audio kexts (HDAEnabler, AppleHDA, and LegacyHDA) to your Snow Leopard's extensions folder as well as keeping them in your Chameleon's extensions folder in /Extra. This fixed my sound in the end when it wasn't working. Also, make sure to remove ALL of the drives from the Private Spotlight list now, and let Spotlight index everything. If it is able to do this, you've solved that problem!

@noob766, I never said it was a competition lol... I have to go for a few hours anyway, so if you want to help answering people's questions then be my guest, whatever makes the community happy makes me happy.

d00m42,

Good news so far!

Ok, I removed RealtekR1000.kext from the system. Rebooted, and then ran kext_utility which was posted above and in your guide..

BEFORE:

It would crash the computer once it started to process and compile as did most disk/processor related activity.. lol

AFTER:

It ran 100%, I rebooted...

No problem so far

Ethernet functions

Time Machine functions

Bonjour is working

Conclusion (so far):

If using the DSDT approach and including LAN in it, there simply is no need for the Realtk1000 kext, and might be causing some people *issues*

I also noticed that other guides to do with GA EP45 series are not using it

Well, it it doesn't work, then I'll just wipe it and add the space to my linux partition and wait for a "distro" to come out for SL, or just install 10.5.5 again and start a different method. I don't have another partition to make to put SL on, so this is really my only way of doing this.

theres alot of ways to get this to work, focus on just getting the system up and running, then start working on fixing the drivers.

Seems to be reasonable. I am going to add information about this in the guide, suggesting people to NOT use it at first, only using if it nothing else works. Thanks for this find.

i wasn't the one that voted no btw ;)

my guide isn't about making an installation partition. it explains how to use the hidden EFI partition because i like the way it works. you just have to change where you install chameleon to make it into a usb bootloader, cd bootloader, or anything else.

How should i begin this? I've got the dmg sitting on the desktop and mounted. Only enough space on my HDD to install directly to the current 10.5.7 install I have. Some Verbatim DL discs to burn it to [if I need too]. And of course, some time.

What computer do you have? Chipset and graphics card?

K well I'm going to go for a while doing some homework and college application stuff. noob766, you seem pretty knowledgeable, so try to help out with any problems you can (If you are up to it ;)). Everyone else, keep coming up with the issues/success stories, they're the only way I can refine the guide to cover more bases. If you have a KP (for the 3rd time I'm saying this), POST A SCREENSHOT! Or, at the least, tell us what process caused the issue.

ok here goes:

MOBO: EVGA 780i SLI [nVidia chipset]

GPU: 9800GX2 1024MB vRAM [512MB per core]

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz @ 3.0GHz

RAM: 6GB DDR2 800

so i'm really sorry but i'm almost out of time for a while to help you, but in the next few hours i should be able to post a guide for you.

to make this quicker can you post the fixes you made to leopard in order to get your system running? I don't need links, just a quick explanation of some kexts you used. otherwise I have to go look them up.

also what partition map are your drives?

so your mobo and cpu will work vanilla, just have to get you graphics and you should be able to boot using my guide.

hey d00m42,

again thanks for the guide!

how about cpu temperature monitoring? does it work for any of you?

i also had that problem with 10.5.7

i have an Intel core 2 duo 8400 3.0 Ghz and its temperatures are not showing in any of the common programs (iStat, temp monitor.).

anyone have any suggestions?

thanks!

@d00m42

Found a BIG issue for those running a drive or partition with windows 7 installed and formated with NTFS!

Remove or disconnect your Windows 7 drive, or you will be getting OSX crashes, *ntfs corruption*, possible KP's!

I have plowed through my logs looking for possible reasons for random crashing, kp's (prior to Realtek1000.ktext removal)

One of the symptoms I was seeing was sata devices became delayed, even paused for up to 10secs before a sata device would respond.. this would repeat about 3 times then.. crashed to the GSOD screen. The other symptom was slow overall disk reads / writes

Looking back through my logs I found the following in regards to WINDOWS 7 NTFS ONLY

Below was the findings:

Aug 29 14:07:49 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 25): ntfs_inode_data_sync(): ubc_msync() of data for mft_no 0x69 failed (error 30).

Aug 29 14:07:49 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 25): ntfs_vnop_pageout(): Failed (error 30).

Aug 29 14:07:55 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 13078): ntfs_mft_record_sync(): Failed to write mft record 0xe5e8 (error 13).

Aug 29 14:07:55 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 13078): ntfs_inode_sync(): Failed to sync mft_no 0xe5e8 (error 13). Run chkdsk.

Aug 29 14:07:55 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 13078): ntfs_vnop_inactive(): Failed to sync mft_no 0xe5e8, type 0x80, name_len 0xc (error 13).

Aug 29 14:20:49 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 90): ntfs_mft_record_sync(): Failed to write mft record 0xe5e8 (error 13).

Aug 29 14:20:49 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 90): ntfs_inode_sync(): Failed to sync mft_no 0xe5e8 (error 13). Run chkdsk.

Aug 29 14:20:49 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 90): ntfs_vnop_inactive(): Failed to sync mft_no 0xe5e8, type 0x80, name_len 0x0 (error 13).

and the following errors regarding NTFS version issues:

ntfs_inode_afpinfo_cache(): AFP_AfpInfo data attribute of mft_no 0x8e0c contains invalid data (wrong signature, wrong version, or wrong size), ignoring and using defaults.

Aug 29 14:22:36 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs warning (device /dev/disk1s3, pid 25): ntfs_inode_afpinfo_cache(): AFP_AfpInfo data attribute of mft_no 0x8e0e contains invalid data (wrong signature, wrong version, or wrong size), ignoring and using defaults.

Aug 29 14:22:36 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs warning (device /dev/disk1s3, pid 25): ntfs_inode_afpinfo_cache(): AFP_AfpInfo data attribute of mft_no 0x8e0f contains invalid data (wrong signature, wrong version, or wrong size), ignoring and using defaults.

Aug 29 14:22:36 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs warning (device /dev/disk1s3, pid 25): ntfs_inode_afpinfo_cache(): AFP_AfpInfo data attribute of mft_no 0x8e10 contains invalid data (wrong signature, wrong version, or wrong size), ignoring and using defaults.

Aug 29 14:27:56 Brians-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: NTFS-fs error (device /dev/disk1s2, pid 13220): ntfs_vnop_pageout(): Failed (error 30).

So, without haste I booted into my windows 7... BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH 3 times @ boot

Had to repair the disk and found TONS of errors!

*********

Head the warning, remove the drive or disable OSX from mounting that drive/partition...

Until further information can be found regarding this problem

**********

Since I have removed the drive completely I have noticed night and day speed difference on the sata performance.

I have had ZERO system errors / GSOD or KP's since..

I have an E8500 that's OC'd to 3.8 GHz atm, and Temperature Monitor works fine for me. When you install it, it asks you to install a driver (automatically) and you say yes. I haven't had any issues so far... It worked in 10.5.7/10.5.8 too... What mobo do you have?

Wow, this is a huge find. I will put this in the Troubleshooting section, and mention this in the Drives section. I have to say, I have always been one to unplug every other drive when installing ANY operating system, because naturally that will make the installation smoother. That's why I always try to keep it to 1 OS per disk.

Everything's working now, even Software Update! (probably related to kextcache) - Hooray! Thanks again d00m and noob!

Awesome! Another happy customer served, my pleasure : )

EP45T-UD3R

i installed temp monitor and the drivers it asks to install - but it says it can't load the kernel extensions or something like that (running in 64 bit mode).

It's possible then that Temperature Monitor requires 32-bit mode. I don't know if there's much you can do if there are no x64 drivers for it. I will look into it further. What are the main differences between the EP45-UD3R and the EP45T-UD3R?

Guys, this is interesting... After removing RealtekR1000.kext and booting in 64 bit mode (just -v), my sound is dead, and my JMicronATA.kext is dead (so my IDE drives aren't detected). Hmm... I was pretty sure my sound/IDE kexts were 64-bit

EDIT: Yep, rebooted with -x32, and my IDE and sound functionality came back. I think I just have to find a x64 version of JMicronATA.kext and HDAEnabler.kext. Otherwise, yes, my ethernet works fine without RealtekR1000.kext, so I can confirm that.

The issue is inside apple's IOATAFamily.kext or AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext try using this

AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext.zip

and more :)

HDAEnabler.kext.zip

JMicronATA.kext.zip

Same here, I never install OSX or windows with another disk present.

I have always removed/disconnected the sata on the other drive until all is operational

I am thinking that there SL has a Kernel Driver for NTFS that is not Windows 7 happy.. lol

I do know that this problem did not happen with 10.5.8 and never has been a log entry showing NTFS errors until SL

In any case, my machine is screaming fast again and problem free!

So for now it remains unplugged until I further investigate possible solutions

Well, I give up. Been trying this for a day now and no luck. Random KP, different modules.

Hopefully it will get smoothed out and simplified over the next few weeks.

What Motherboard, CPU, and graphics to you have? i'll help you get it working
