SATA vs. AHCI Install. Gigabyte P45-UD3R.

This is my second IPC 10.5.6 install on a P45-UD3R board. My first install with this board worked perfect with the SATA modes [disabled] not [ahci] and it work perfect.

 

My second install only works in AHCI mode which work great but I am dual booting XP on a different drive and they both need to work in SATA mode for easy booting. I don't want to have to change the bios settings to just boot either OS system.

 

I have read people needing to set either AHCI or SATA to get their systems to work but noboby seems to know exactly why one works and the other doesn't.

 

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need to search the Web for your answer. It's a pretty simple fix to get AHCI enabled in XP and still be able to run OSX. PS: AHCI IS SATA, specifically:

 

AHCI mode brings 3 main advantages:

 

1. Supports NCQ (Native Command Queuing) allowing SATA drives to accept more than one command at a time and dynamically reorder the commands for maximum efficiency.

2. Supports hot plugging of devices

3. Supports staggered spin ups of multiple hard drives at boot time
