flashing screen on boot

So I installed ideneb 10.5.6 using only the bare drivers for my system (via ata, alc888,voodo 9.5 w/seatbelt fix, rhine ethernet) and it installs no problem, then on the reboot it loads up to a certain point and then the screen flashes really fast like a strobe light. trying -v says something about a service being started as the last line before it starts flashing (the line doesn't even get finished, it's cut off halfway). trying -v -x -f gets me all the way to "localhost /usr/sbin/ocspd[56]: starting", and from what i can tell it's gotten all the way up to the part where it's supposed to show the gui, but instead i get a strobe light. i did not install any drivers/injectors for my graphics card (8800gts 320), expecting to be able to boot with horrible vesa 3.0 14mb graphics until i could get the efi string up.

any ideas?
