Mr. Bond
Not really Osx86 related, but still Mac news nontheless.... From NME.com... "APPLE SET TO UNVEIL MUSIC-PLAYING MOBILE PHONE APPLE is poised to unveil a mobile phone that plays music just like its best-selling IPOD. Made by Motorola, the handset will have Apple iTunes onboard and will be available via the US Cingular phone service, the BBC reports. The news was broken by analyst Roger Entner, who said he had been briefed about the device and the partners producing it. None of the companies involved were prepared to comment on the revelations. Speculation that the music phone was about to be unveiled began when Apple issued teasing invites for a press conference on 7 September. The company famously never talks about unreleased products but it did let slip that the press conference was "music related". Adding to the speculation was the admission by Motorola that the iTunes phone it was preparing with Apple would be ready for release by the end of September. But Ovum analyst Entner gave details of the forthcoming phone to newswires and papers. He said the device will give a phone music playing abilities roughly equivalent to Apple's iPod shuffle. This smaller music playing device has either 512MB or 1GB of storage. The larger model can hold up to 240 songs. The handset due to be unveiled will reportedly be the first in a series of iTunes equipped phones made by Motorola that will be given the name "Rokr". What is unclear as yet is whether the phone will allow for music to be downloaded via wireless services or only when the gadget is connected to a computer. Apple and Motorola are not the first to unveil handsets that can play music. Many handsets already have basic media players on board and store many tracks on high-capacity memory cards." Personally, I don't really like the "Rokr" name, since it doesn't really fit in with the string of other Apple products....iTunes, iPod, etc. Why not something like iPhone, or iCell? I know, sounds corny, but still... Also, interesting concept of downloading music from iTunes on the phone. Not necessarily a new idea, but it will be interesting to see if there's seamless integration between iTunes, PC and Mobile alike. So essentially, this is a souped up iPod Shuffle, with the ability to be used as a phone as well. Just another step in Apple's plan for world domination.... TheElementWithin
My question about MP3 phones is... Are you able to listen to the music on a air plane? You are not allowed to turn your cellphone on, and some people I know would only use it on an air plane because they travel allot. Heck my i730 phone, which mind you doesn't have a memory card slot, or an mp3 player, has one. I would be extremly surprised if it did not have an airplane mode, as most normal phones without any music functionality do. I'm so happy to know that apple didn't design this piece of doodle. And Cingular is a horrible company to boot. The motorola V551 and RAZR had such slow guis. I wonder if there is any improvement with this phone? I couldn't imagine listening to itunes and receiving a phone call without the phone locking up. For a product getting attention via apple, I would've hoped Motorola could've made something less fugly. blahsucks
Just read a few reviews on this thing; I'll get the sources in a few minutes. It's not as bad as it looks, it could use some improvement, according to what I've read so far. The music quality is good, and the music UI is basically the iPod menu copied verbatim (the rest of the phone UI I'm not sure about) Yeah, it also comes with those white earbuds, modded with a mic. When you get a call, the music pauses. Seems pretty good, but definitely not a full iPod replacement. It's basically on par with the first $99 shuffle, except with menus. I personally, think its {censored}. I don't have one, so correct me if I'm wrong on the following, but lets look at what it does/doesnt do. > Has wireless connection for phone, but fails to allow music downloads over that wireless connection... requires being plugged into the computer > Stores mp3s, but doesnt let those be used as ringtones... you have to pay extra for the ringtones > Combines phone and IPod? This is hardly the case... the storage on the phone is nowhere close to the IPod, so if you want a serious MP3 player, you'll have to buy a seperate one anyway. Its a great idea, but honestly, I'm dissapointed. It could have been so much better, but as many reviews say, if it was better, it might cut down on IPod sales... Its sad when companies dont develop better products to protect the sales of their current ones. mikesown
I didn't think the ROKR was anything TOO impressive. So what, I can play 128kbps AAC DRM'd files on a 100-song crippled cell phone? Oh joy! Nothing really new here. Just an expensive phone. To be honest, I expected a sleeker phone, but then again, I guess moto designed it :/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/1664-apple-to-unveil-music-playing-phone/#findComment-18823 Share on other sites
FluffyWithTeeth
They're not DRM'd. AAC is just the Apple licensed version of mpeg4, it's a perfectly fine standard, and nothing's wrong with it. The only DRM'd content Apple uses is on the songs that come out of the Music Store. PsychoSync
Only one question: does that ROKR phone works with iTunes in osx86? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/1664-apple-to-unveil-music-playing-phone/#findComment-38814 Share on other sites
werD420
One of my friends purchased the Rockr Some three weeks ago, which I set up. I used it in itunes under xp pro. It was a quick process to set it up and file transfer rates were average. One plus is that you can swap individual songs out without having to send them all at once ( Ive heard of this issue with some ipods) One neg is It will only hold 100 or so songs no matter what size memory stick it has. So buying a gig memory stick wouldn't make you have 1GB ipod storage capability. Another big negative is you can not use your mp3's as ringtones without some converting to midi or polyphonic and downloading it seperate. As far as playing files it has a pretty good response time and sounds good. It would be nice for an in car mp3 player. From what I have read about the Sony model Walkman it seems to have this beat although I haven't used it so I can't vouch for the actual response times and sound quality Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/1664-apple-to-unveil-music-playing-phone/#findComment-38832 Share on other sites
