Hi,

I haven't been able to find anything regarding this despite nforce4 being discussed to death on a lot of forums... so i apologise in advance if this has already been solved. I'm running a single SATA disk on nforce4 board that i'm trying to get osx to run on. It seems that people are saying that this issue is fixed with 10.4.6? So i got a 10.4.6 ISO and am trying to install it now -- I'm installing via VMWare, but instead of runnig through the virtual hard disk hoop, i'm allowing it to write directly into the partition i want it to install on -- is this okay? Afterwards, it boots up just fine in VMware (again, I allow VMware to boot to my acutal physical disk). I can get into OSX and use it like any other OS. But when i reboot in native mode, I get a kernel panic on the boot.

I installed the nforce ata mod that was in the installation... do i need to do any of the stuff with kext files still? Or should it work right after installation?

sorry for being a n00b :(

If it helps any, it seems to be able to DETECT the hard disk when i boot from native mode -- it scrolls tons of text of loading files in /system/ ... /, then after that (when the font changes into the white font) it does a kernel panic there. I'll write out the error here:

Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 0 = divide error), registers:

......

Thanks!

I think this is more to do with your (presumably AMD?) cpu rather than the SATA detection, which sounds like it's working OK if you can install to.

Try creating the partition with diskpart and type AF in Windows, then booting your system from the install CD, I was able to use my nForce4 SATA disk this way.

I had the same kernel panic when booting with JaS' DVD as you, I'm burning Myzar's 10.4.5 disc now, I'll let you know if I have more success.

Check my thread about nForce4 SATA for some more info.

Oh sorry -- i forgot to list my system specs:

Gigabyte K8N Pro-SLI

Athlon X2 4200+

GeforceFX 5200

1.5 GB Ram

160 GB Seagate 7200.9 SATA

I just tried to do the install in native mode, and the disk utility doesn't even see my disk (although now i have a partition with OSX installed on it). Is it because the sata driver doesn't load itself as part of the install?

Thanks for the help

My PPF-patched JaS disc could see my SATA drive and install to it, but I couldnt boot due to a kernel panic as above. I'm running Myzar's 10.4.5 of an old ATA so the kernel on that seems fine. Im waiting for the PPF to download, I'm going to try installing it direct to SATA and see how I go. I'll let you know. At this stage looks like Myzar's disc is more AMD/SATA-friendly.

Hm,

It turns out i wasn't using the REAL real JaS DVD i think. I was using the theSpam PPF patch which was abotu 365 MB; there was a different patch out there that was 650 MB. I applied that patch and was able to see my disk on installation. We'll see how theinstallation goes!

trying it now.. *Crosses fingers*

After tinkering it for 2 more days, i'm pretty much certain it's NOT SATA that's causing the kernel panic. I got ahold of a PATA drive and installed it to that. I tried BOTH native and VMWare, but i get the exact same "divide by zero" kernel error in both instances. I've tried installing 10.4.5 without SSE, and 10.4.5 with SSE, and 10.4.6 without SSE, and 10.4.6 with SSE. Each of these i've tried both on SATA and PATA, but i get the same kernel panic each time. I'm starting to suspect it's my athlon dual-core... is there any patches out there for dual core? DO i need to use special boot options to get it to boot?

Thanks

Oh I got that too, sorry I didn't realise your specific issue. I had that on both the JaS and Myzar default kernels, I couldn't get past it with Jas', but on the Myzar disk using mach_kernel.old as my boot argument worked just fine. OTOH my ongoing problems with SATA have forced me back to Linux :D. I guess MacOS will have to stay on my iBook for now.

Sambo60...

I have been trying to install for days now. I have the EVGA nforce mobo/vid card(7800gt) bundle that was sold a couple of months ago. I am using the amd x2 3800 with SATA drives. I have the myDVD 10.4.4 that allows me to get the OS to go through the install...then when I go to choose my disks to install they are not there. I then go into the disk util tool and the only drive it sees is the DVD. It does not see my sata controller. I have been working with PC's for over 10 years now and have been in IT for 14 years. Point being I'm not a retard. :)

The only problem I can think is that I have 3 partitions on the first disk.

disk0

part 1 = 200meg fat drive for bootmagic

part2 = 76 gig ntfs windows xp

part 3 = 76 gig AF for MACOSX

All partitions are primary. I have set part 3 as active.

What did you do to get your setup working?

Was it the VMware install..copy

Should I go to a 4.6 version?

I don't want to give up but I am not sure if I will get it to work with the nforce4 SATA combo.

also

Can I patch my 4.4 image with 4.5 then up to 4.6?

Just curious.

Any help from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

two2deep.

Dual Core.

I've seen other people post with X2's but maybe it's the X2 Nforce4 SATA combo?

I just got the 10.4.6 patch to the Myz DVD.

I'm going to give it a try(Burning image now)

If it does not see it. I'm going to pick up a IDE drive. It sees my DVD on the PATA channel.

So I would assume that it would see the IDE drive on the same PATA channel.

Let me know if there is anything else.

Sorry got happy and replied for SAMBO

Hi two2deep,

It sounds like we almost have the same config -- i wasn't able to see my harddrive in setup until i upgraded PPF to JaS' 10.4.6 DVD from Myzar's 10.4.5.

I hope you have better luck than I on this! ^^

I have made progress finally!

EVGA Nforce4 SATA HD AMD x2 3800

The system will see the drives and I can now format a partition in the disk editor in OSX during the install

process, I have to format the drive. Then I go through the install. I select the options I want, and it

starts to copy the files over. However it is failing....

Looking at the log I am getting a Bomfilerror 22 Invalid Argument

Volumes/OSX//usr/share/vim/vim62/ftplugin/sql.vim

during the BSD installation.

Any ideas???
