A Simple Guide to the 4830/4850/4870/4870x2/4890

Recommended Posts

I am still having problems with my ATI HD4870 - 512 MB...

Can anyone help me out? I am on 10.5.7 Leopard... i just can't get it to work!

I tried various kext's, tutorials, etc.

I am able to force to 1600x1200 with a boot.plist hack, but that's lame..

I want to get 1920x1200, and QE/CI support...

Below is a screenshot from my card...plz help me out anyone!ati-card.jpg

I'm in need of the file located at http://rapidshare.de/files/46870770/ATY_Motmot.kext.zip.html for the 4850 Instructions below. From what I can tell (from a google cached page), rapidshare.de servers were shut down on 3/1/10 and I get redirected to rapidshare.com without a pointer to the file.

Trying to get an HD 4870 working in 10.5.7. Anything else needed for 10.5.8?

Thanks,

Scott

4850 INSTRUCTIONS

1. Download this to your desktop, and run the installation package. Don't restart just yet: [Rapidshare.de] http://rapidshare.de/files/45661062/7_rade...rivers.pkg.html [Mediafire] http://www.mediafire.com/?mz1leyhyolh [badongo] http://www.badongo.com/file/13612115 [DepositFiles] http://depositfiles.com/en/files/pxf70804a

2. Download this: http://rapidshare.de/files/46870770/ATY_Motmot.kext.zip.html and install the kext file with Kext Helper.

3. Reboot with -f -v (kextcache/verbose mode).

You should now have QE/CI and resolution change on your 4850. If you get something weird when you reboot, or if you can't change the resolution, looks at the "BUGS" section below.

4870 INSTRUCTIONS

First, follow the 4850 INSTRUCTIONS above. Then, follow these instructions:

1. Download this: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?z2atjzyjwm5

2. Backup your existing OpenGL.framework

3. Replace it with the new 10.5.7 framework

4. Repair permissions.

5. Reboot with -f -v.

Hello everybody out there! *STRANGE PROBLEM*

"After installing vanilla SL , updated to 10.6.2 , put the kext about the id using kext helper , then installed the qe-ci-exotic package.

Resolution is perfect , so is refresh rate @60 , BUT there’s a strange hiccups from the GUI ..I don’t know where it’s coming from but when moving the mouse it’s making some “stops†when moving , and not only the mouse but the whole GUI , but it’s most noticeable with the mouse (even when typing you can notice it)."

It's like a lag but more like hiccups I can't explain it but it's not for a good work , missclicks and so on are happening. Anyway , do you have any idea what can be causing this ?

I've used what netkas has posted here - http://netkas.org/?p=315 (the files that i'm talking about)

Asus P5QL-E , Sapphire 4830 512 DVI-svideo-DVI , Snow Leopard from retail dvd , updated to 10.6.2.

I would greatly appreciate any help , I couldn't find anything on the subject.

Thank you very much!

EDIT: *FIXED* -> Changed DVI port to the one closer to the motherboard , now it's working perfectly ! :)

I would say:

- upgrade to Snow! (But I guess you have your reasons for staying on the older stuff);

- Try Netkas EFI10.6 on top of Cham RC3's boot0/boot1h and with GraphicsEnabler Yes in com.Apple.boot.plist.

If you don't have a DSDT.aml, you may need to specify pciroot as 1 (think it default's to 0 which may not be right for your config) in your ..Boot.plist. See Netkas' site.

Works very nicely in SL so far for me on dual-DVI socket XFX 1GB 4870. No idea about 10.5.8.

No need to mess with adding kexts or installer packages, if you are lucky; it'll just work.

UPDATE!

A lot of people have been problems lately, and so have I. Try following the following:

Ok, I've been having problems with my own rig lately (black screen, etc). SO, I did the following.

1. Boot with -s, and do the following commands:

CODE

/sbin/mount -uw /

cd /system/library/extensions

rm -r ATI*

rm -r natit.kext*

reboot

2. Reboot with -f -v.

3. Install this: http://www.mediafire.com/?mz1leyhyolh

4. Then install this: http://rapidshare.de/files/47335568/Enable..._cards.pkg.html

5. Go to /system/library/extensions and open ATINDRV.kext. Go into the plugins folder and delete ATY_motmot.kext.

6. Reboot with -f -v.

7. Enjoy.

A lot of stuff has been happening since netkas first got QE/CI/Res Change on the 4850. Now, the 4830, 4850, 4870, 4870x2, and possibly the 4980 work just fine.

4830 INSTRUCTIONS

1. Follow step 1 from the 4850 instructions below.

2. Download and install the following 2 kext files with Kext Helper: http://rapidshare.de/files/46800670/accel.tar.bz2.html & http://rapidshare.de/files/46858272/Natit.kext.tar.bz2.html.

3. Reboot with -f -v.

You'll probably experience screen bouncing issues, but that can easily be fixed with a simple BIOS flash with higher clock speeds.

Your 4870 should now have QE/CI.

4870x2 INSTRUCTIONS

(There may need to be more instructions added for the 4870x2.)

1. Download this: http://rapidshare.de/files/46800670/accel.tar.bz2.html

2. Put everything in the /System/Library/Extensions folder.

3. Repair permissions.

4. Reboot with -f -v.

Your 4870x2 may or may not have QE/CI/Res Change. I may have to update these instructions. I don't even remember where I found them.

4890 INSTRUCTIONS

I'm not sure how to get the 4890 working. Some people have reported to get it working, but I don't know how to do that.

BUGS:

1. You may be getting a jumpy/bouncy screen on your 4850 when you move your mouse.

>>FIX FOR NUMBER 1: Download this package (http://rapidshare.de/files/45735243/Natit_no_powerplay_4800_4600.pkg.html) and install it. Reboot, and it should all be fine.

2. You may get a black screen when changing resolutions.

>>FIX FOR NUMBER 2: Download and install this package (http://rapidshare.de/files/45735159/Natit_with_4850_bios_inside.pkg.html). Reboot, and you should be able to change resolutions without any problems.

3. You may get a light blue screen after doing a hard-restart

>>FIX FOR NUMBER 3: Boot with -s, and do the following commands:

/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /system/library/extensions
rm -r natit.kext
rm -r atiradeonx2000.kext
exit

It should go into OS X just fine. From here, you can reinstall the drivers, reboot, and all should be fine again.

4. Sometimes, the mouse/everything will freeze in certain programs.

>>FIX FOR NUMBER 4: You probably have QuartzGL enabled. If so, disable it in OSx86Tools. QuartzGL barely does anything anyway :D.

Credit needs to go to netkas as I haven't done anything in the development of these drivers.

Some of these instructions may be off or out of date, so if someone could help me update this, then send me a PM with any updated instructions/links/details.

It is a nice tutorial but unfortunately Rapidshare links does not work! (there is just stupid video about rapidshare...) Can you transfer the rapidshare files to mediafire or other site? That couls be very very kind from you!!!

(I expecially intered in ati 4870 ...

I have 2 power color pcs+ hd4850 1gb. I can make one of them work without the other in SL 10.6.3 using 10.6.2 kexts (ATI4800Controller, ATIFramebuffer, ATISupport) and native 10.6.3 ATIRadeonX2000.kext just by adding my dev-id. No problem at all, everything is ok. the resolution 1080, QE/CI, OpenCL just fine.

Then I tried put both of them together, they got recognized automatically as device in slot-1 & slot-2 and I got garbled/artifact welcome screen about 5 second. The resolution still 1080, QE/CI work but when I click System Preferences, it is not responding. Finder work but if I plug in or mount something, the Finder is not responding. But after reboot a couple of time, I got ATY MotMot not usable and only one of my cards got detected as device in slot-1. Everything back to normal, no "app not responding" whatsoever and res QE/CI still work.

The day after I turn on my computer and I got this garbled etc again, System Preferences not responding but res QE/CI work. I know the culprit is the ATIRadeonX2000.kext, it injects ATY MotMot to both of my cards and it seems doesnt work well on my 2nd card. It just that if I can make the ATY MotMot unusable on my 2nd card again, then I dont have to put out my 2nd card everytime I want to use SL. I'm multibooting with 7+ubuntu.

Anyone can help?
