irPhunky
So it's been two weeks since i started messing around with the whole hackingt0sh idea and i have to say i'm loving it and will be looking at getting a Mac Book in the next couple of weeks for work, how ever i would like to move my desktop away from the iDeneb install if possible. My current hardware is all intel based and i believe i shouldn't have any problem using a Retail disk to re-install my system. My current hardware is as follows; Intel E8400 C2D DFI Dark IP35 TRS2 6GB OCZ PC2-6400 RAM 320mb Nvidia 8800GTS 74BG Raptor Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/153264-can-i-use-the-retail-dvd/ Share on other sites

MacUser2525
You link seems to be dead - think you copied and pasted it wrong The hardware you listed seems fine however the most important part is left out the motherboard used perhaps you may want to post it, even better would be making a signature listing all your hardware in the machine. MacUser2525
D'oh, don;t believe i missed that have edited the post Don't see many DFI boards on here but based on the name I'll go with it having a P35 chipset so if it is like any of the others based on it you should be good for a retail install. irPhunky
Yeah its P35 based - whats the major difference with a retail disk install? I assume from your sig that is what you have setup. Does OSX make good use of Quad's? I ended up moving mine to my MediaPC in exchange for this E8400 as Windows never really made any use of it, but if OSX is better then i will happily switch it back in to my main system. The main difference is that you know everything that has been changed, it has been changed by you so you know what has been done to the system making it easier to know where to look if you have problems. What is in my sig is my main machine the other I have is P35 based Gigabyte board with another retail install on it. Depends on what you mean by good use for everyday use if your not doing a lot of encoding/processor intensive tasks then a quad core is wasted, so if you will be doing a lot of this then switch it back otherwise it is a waste of time to do. OS X 10.6 is supposed to have better threading support that will actually make use of the multiple cores at the OS level as well as using the graphics processor to better effect.
