Kurto2021
My sons emac just isn't fast enough anymore and now I am ready to do a mod to it. I am going to replace the 17" CRT with a 17" LCD and then pull the rest out and do a mod. Here is my plan and I was hoping you guys could give me some input on the hardware. I would like to keep costs down as the kid is only 5 so performance isn't an overwhelming issue but would be nice to be faster than a 1ghz G4. I am going to get this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813500010 I am sure it isn't great but I want an itx board to maximize the space in the case. I will put on 2gb of ram and use 2 20gb SATA drives I have (upgraded original 20gb xbox drives with 120gb). 1 will have windows XP the other OSX. The CPU will be my e6600 and I will then upgrade me to a quad core. I would like some input on what wireless card would be best to add to this mix. Also I need to add a small ATX power supply that can be mounted in the case and would hope that is fairly cheap and pretty quiet. I am going to start the mod tomorrow looking at mounting the monitor and getting something setup to hold the mainboard. I might take some pictures if anyone is really interested. UnaClocker
Be very careful when discharging the flyback on that CRT! The motherboard you indicated might work, I'd try to stick with an Intel chipset though, much more compatible. If you just want it to be faster than a 1GHz G4, why not go with the Atom board? Type "Atom 330" into NewEgg and it'll bring it up. I use it on one of my home desktop machines (my wife's main computer) and it's quite nice. And being so low power, you'd have no problem running it on a small power supply. Pictures would be cool, but I think this forum has a case mod section where they might be more appropriate. Kurto2021
I removed the CRT....disappointed to find out the LCD I was given is a 16" and not a 17". I will have to make it work somehow. The motherboard I ordred was this. http://www.buy.com/prod/intel-d945gclf2-es.../208661725.html I will throw in a 2gb stick of memory. What do you think for power? UnaClocker
16" would be the right size for a 17" CRT, the CRT's were over-rated, and a 17" CRT would only have 16" viewable.. So you probably got a 15" LCD, which would make a lot more sense because nobody makes 16" LCD's. You'd have a heck of a time getting an actual 17" LCD to work, because it'd just to be too big. Wow, you paid a whole lot more for that board than Newegg charges.. Ahh well.. As for power, any ATX supply should do it, the board only draws 50watts at peak. Get the smallest one you can get your hands on. Kurto2021
actually I paid less...if you look at the link on the right it shows a lower price. I paid $81.99 with free shipping.
