Unable to justify putting down $2k for an Apple laptop, I decided that this will have to wait and ordered some parts to build a new PC. I'm currently running Ubuntu exclusively and this is what I planned on using when I bought the parts 10 hours ago.

Giving it some thought, I believe that the hackintosh scene has went far along that I can use OS X as my primary OS. Stability is VERY important to me. My computer is on forever (literally), and runs numerous servers, and I use it for work (development), for which I really just need a browser and vim.

So..

Is it practical for me to run OS X as my PRIMARY OS on these specs?

Here are the parts I ordered along with price if anyone is interested.

CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9850 AM2+ ($147 + free shipping)

RAM: 8GB of OCZ DDR2 800 RAM ($20 bucks after rebate*)

MB : Asus M3A78 ($80)

These are the only parts I ordered, I will be using my old PC parts to complete the rig. 500w PSU, geforce 6600GT (overclocked), some WD SATA HDs, and a wifi card with an atheros chipset.

* Yesterday RAM was $10 for 4GB OCZ. Best RAM deal I've ever seen. It was limited to 1 per household so I got my friend to order me another pair. It went up to $25 after rebate, but that's still really good IMO. Also, I know that OSX is 32bit, so I'm assuming only 4gb will be recognized.. ? Is there any way around this?

Thanks!!!

Sorry but, I laughed when you said stability is very important and you were buying a Phenom.

AMDs may have come a long way in OSx86, there's no arguing with that, but they're not the epitome of stability.

Also: OS X is not only 32-bit, the kernel is i386 but supports 64-bit extensions, so it supports more than 4GB of RAM, otherwise what would be the point of Apple selling Mac Pros with 32GB of RAM?

So... I take that as a NO, I should be weary of running osx as my primary os on these specs?

I really wanted to go Intel but the phenom is cheap for its power. I couldn't fit Intel parts within my budget, and the PC is only temporary for a few months.

You're right about the Mac Pro. That slipped my mind. I don't keep up with the Apple scene, but I believe the new MB Pro only supports 4 gigs of RAM .. is that true? if so, how come and is there any way around it?

k, I ended up canceling the AMD order and went with a P45-D3SL and Q6600. It's around $40 more and the AMD setup was probably more future-proof, but that's OK. Thanks for your reply, this issue is now resolved.
