Hi folks. Finally managed to get my laptop up and running to 10.4.11. Had been running for ages on 10.4.8 and even had a try of 10.5.2 but my laptop does not have graphics hardware driver support and therefore could not run DVD or movie files (corrupted images) so have decided to stick with 10.4.x

UPDATE: 5/01/09 - Sleep function was not working and found out with further reading of the forum that is caused by the 8.9.1 kernel as it does not support Power Management functions so i reinstaled 8.8.1 kernel and now the sleep function works

OK, the specification of my laptop is a follows, it's a PackardBell Easynote R8 laptop:

Northbridge: Intel 855PM

Southbridge: Intel ICH4-M

Audio: Realtek ALC655

Video: ATI Radeon 9600/9700 Mobility AGP 128Mb

To get the laptop running 10.4.11 i used the following: Jas 10.4.8 Intel AMD SSE2 SSE3, Uphuck 10.4.9 Install DVD v1.3 and three Apple updates (All for intel NO COMBO's) 10.4.9, 10.4.10 and 10.4.11.

Installing 10.4.8 on the laptop was no problem at all. The 'install components' i selected were, JaS Intel 10.4.8 ATA Kexts Included and Support for common hardware. After the install had finished and rebooted i ended up with a white screen. I rebooted into Single mode (pressing F8 quickly when Darwin bootloader is about to start and typing -s at the prompt to log into Single User Mode). I removed the AGPGart.kext and rebooted the laptop. This now worked and was able to begin to use OSX. Now i wanted to see how i could improve the installation and consequently found a few good threads in this forum. I went to the following forum threads for:-

ATI Radeon 9600/9700 Mobility QE & CI

Patched Files For DVD player for SSE2 CPU's

Update 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 (Method 1)

Update 10.4.x to 10.4.11 (Method 2)

Graphic glitches when using mouse

First i went to the thread regarding the video chip in the laptop. I followed the steps, rebooted my machine, went into system preferences to the display section and noticed 4 new resolutions options were available. I chose 1200x800, went into system profiler and checked the Graphics card section and noticed the 'Core Image' had now changed to 'Hardware Supported' and 'Quartz Extreme' said 'Supported'. Now i could watch my video files without any problems. Next i went to the thread to update the DVD files. This allows me to run DVD's. When i tried to run them at first, the apple DVD program would just crash and give an error.

Now came the hard long task of updating my machine to 10.4.11. I used method one, i know it was long winded but i had a feeling this method was best suited to me and what i was planning to do. I got the three apple updates off the apple websites support section and followed the steps in the thread. As i was only updating OSX and not the kernel, i followed the first two steps of removing 6 files, installing the update, restoring the 6 files then rebooting. Each update worked through to 10.4.11. I was still using kernel 8.8.1 and had read that it could be updated to 8.9.1 and looked around for this file. I could not find it in the forum so i thought i could take it from the 10.4.9 update file using Pacifist. This did not work as it kept crashing the laptop. I kept reading more on the forum and found that i needed a patched version of this 8.9.1 kernel and found one on the uphuck 10.4.9 v1.3 install DVD. there are a few 8.9.1 kernel packages on that DVD and i chose to use 8.9.1 Intel SSE2. I installed that and the system.kext file off the DVD and the machine now booted ok, only this time the 'About This Mac' did not work and i had lost some of my ATI settings (lost hardware support) so firstly i reinstalled the ATI Radeon 9600/9700 files again as set out in the thread i mentioned above and got back all my settings again. The 'About This Mac' was not so simple. I looked everywhere in the forum on how to sort this out and it appears that using the loginwindow.app package from 10.4.5 cures it. I tried getting it from the 10.4.5 security update package from Apples support website but that did not work. I noticed on the uphuck DVD there was a loginwindow package so i installed that and it worked. I can now click on 'About This Mac' and i get the window appearing. The file i used was uphuck's 10.4.4 loginwindow.

Lastly i noticed that when i moved the mouse around the screen i would get little small squares appearing. I found out that this is caused when i have QE enabled. To eliminate this, i used a program called Mouse Locator found in the thread above. Followed the steps and the squares, although not removed, do not appear due to how the mouse program functions.

Now i have a fully working OSX 10.4.11 system. Many thanks goes to the originators and contributors of the threads i have mentioned above. Without the extremely useful information contained within i would not have been able to achieve what i have. Your the stars!!!!

Lucky me, I have the same hardware as you have.

It work flawlessly HTX!

One thing, how did you manage to get the correct cpu speed readings in "about mac"?

Mine shows 600mhz (in 10.4.5 showed correctly tho)

Is it a kext or something?

I have Pentium M 1.8.

Thx.

ps.

I use Jas 10.4.8 too and now i'm 10.4.11using your guide.

Hi, it may have something to do with the battery/ac power. My laptop was using the ac adapter when i took the pic so the CPU speed was running at maximum. If your running on batteries, it will half the CPU value basically, or thereabouts. I wonder if this is why you was seeing 600Mhz. Plug in your ac adapter, power it on and check the speed in 'about this mac' again
