Hi there,

I installed Iaktos v5i last night on a HFS+ formatted partition (formatted using mac osx disk utility) without a hitch. This was my secondary experimental partiton and I use Vista on the main one (and 1 or 2 hidden backup ones). After the installation completed and the computer automatically rebooted I got a BIOS error stating that my MBR on the hard disk wasn't found. Neither Vista or Debian booted.

I tried booting debian directly from the Iatkos cd but all i got was a kernal panic error.

Tried booting from vista cd to see if i could repair the vista partition but it wouldn't detect any partition.

So I resorted to trying and fixing the MBR using partition table doctor bootable cd. As soon as I inserted It it stated that my partition tables wern't present/corrupted and offered to fix them for me. I fixed them using the "interactive option" "thinking that it would allow me to choose options but it didn't).

When it finished "fixing it" gave me a partition that was my whole hard drive! Very worried at this point I rebooted and tried again using the "auto" option this time (because it said to use auto if interactive failed).

Same depressing result.

I then tried using the fix MBR option on partition table doctor but that didn't help.

I now have an unformatted HD with no OS and all my work lost. (I used vista as my works OS and mac osx as an experiment) icon_sad.gif.

Learn't the lesson. backup backup backup!!! and never experiment with your main machine!!

What should have I done instead and is everything lost forever or is there a chance to recover the Vists OS?

to restore your vista: use your backup dvd.

if you havent created the backup dvd, then find a friend who has same laptop as yours.

its a hard lesson for you...
