MacRonin
After much contemplation and been playing around doing the Hackintosh thing for a couple of years. I have finally found a great deal of annoyance in doing the hacking the OS X thing. I have finally decided that no more is to be done, but to go out and get the real deal. Yes.... A Mac!! I have seen the light and I will not use a PC no more. The question here lies, which one should I get. I like the new MBP with the gual GFX cards, but the speed of the processing seems to be lacking. The old MBP have all of the processing power, however its only got the one GFX card. I would like to know if you were to be in a purchasing position which would you be inclined to purchase? Performanace in all aspects is what I am looking for and maybe leaning towards the old MBPs at this moment. Whats your advice? Wrenbird
This one and this one are very close in spec. The new model has a humble 30MHz on the old one, and a faster graphics solution, but has a 15" display vs. the 17" display. So pretty much: The new MBP's have slightly (Not even perceivable) faster processors, and faster graphics. And they're $300 cheaper. Unless you want a warmer and bigger computer, I see no reason to buy the old MBP. geiman
Yeah I'm torn as well, over the same features. The new macbooks seem to have many problems, ie the incompatability with pwnage, drm issues, trackpad issues (although it's been fixed i believe) and the like, but the new dual graphics card solution seems like something I would like and put to good use. If it was me, I think I'd get the new one just for that feature since I like to have the best of both worlds in a laptop: having less powerful graphics to get better battery life at times like school, and then being able to switch to more powerful graphics to play games. Thats the selling point for me. Just my 2 cents.... MacRonin
Well the new 15' MBPs are upgradeable to 2.8 C2D and that may be a a seller, but a pointed out with compatibility issues running 2.5 C2D vs 2.8 may not be a differrence at all. The compatibility issues with various things makes me ponder even more whether a headache is really worth it. I guess I will have to find out how much of a performance increase will I see with the 2 GFX onboard to make the final decision. You're forgetting that the new MBPs run on the Montevina based Penryns, which run much cooler and have a better architecture than the previous Santa Rosa platform Penryns. Generally, the new MBPs run cooler than the old ones, which makes it much more easier to sit it on your lap. I think Apple could go back to calling these laptops now. Well I didn't say anything about the architecture because I wasn't sure about it, but I did mention that the old ones run warmer Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/139021-the-old-mbp-or-the-new-mbp/#findComment-988297 Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
The new ones are nicer buy if you can get an old Macbook Pro for 25% or less cash, then it's worth it, as the specs are nearly the same, and it's still a very nice machine with Penryn, LED screen etc. Like at Apple Refurbished there were some nice deals a while ago. BTW check lowendmac.com on Macbook Pros' prices Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/139021-the-old-mbp-or-the-new-mbp/#findComment-991789 Share on other sites
