notetoself
My system ran beautifully for the first few days... but I've been getting a LOT of repeat kernel panics and I'm wondering if there is relatively straight-forward way for me to interpret the cause of the problem and start looking for a solution or work-around. Anyone have experience with this or can offer a little know-how? Thanks a bunch! MacUser2525
From the specifications in your signature I would say the IDE drive your running OS X on is the culprit try using a SATA drive and I'll bet the panics go away. Volcacius
Boot with debug=0x100 ; that will allow you to see panic details instead of usual "you have to restart etc" Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/135388-how-to-find-root-cause-of-repeated-kernel-panics/#findComment-959505 Share on other sites
notetoself
Ahh... From the specifications in your signature I would say the IDE drive your running OS X on is the culprit try using a SATA drive and I'll bet the panics go away. This raises an interesting issue... NUMBER 1 -- I've spent HOURS getting all of my drivers in order for OSX on my IDE drive... Can I just copy my extensions directory and re-instate it if I install OSX on the SATA drive? I say this because I didn't document everything I've done and to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I could do it again!! NUMBER 2 -- For software that I've downloaded / installed ... Can I copy it off to an external drive and then move it back over into a fresh installation on my SATA drive? I didn't save the installers and I've got hours and hours worth of software updates that I've already installed. If it can't be done then it simply cannot be done and I'll just have to bite the bullet and switch drives... but IF there is something I can do to make this easier on me, I'm gonna give it a go! As long as you get can get through it without a kernel panic then you can use diskutil to clone your install to the new drive then reinstall your boot loader on the new drive and boot from it. If it won't do that then you can always boot from your install disk to use its copy of diskutil to do it.
