Guess EFI-X isn't so bulletproof after all... See there http://forum.efi-x.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=456, I feel bad for people who paid a lot for this.

I guess the latest 10.5.5 DVD (9F2xxx) which has AppleRTC.kext panicing on hackint0sh is affecting EFI-X users too.

So is hackint0sh ~ EFI-X ? This is your call...

I just saw the post about price on their forum. Initially, here, all I was hearing was not to worry, it would plummet in price once mass production got under way... Worst PR, ever.

But, fair enough, they seem to be pitching more toward the wealthy Photoshop/specialist buyer than the mass market. I think they would make much, much more selling it for much, much less. Recession, anybody?

Well, so much for the "no problem with updates" claim. I guarantee you this will cause the price of their product to drop; although, I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with an update super quick that takes care of the issue. They should implement a little software checker that goes through a verification process to make sure an update is ok before it is applied. Posting a plea like that on a forum is no way to handle those kind of issues.

That would make it a none issue.

Good idea.

Then again, leaving your customers out in the cold when you know ahead of time there's an issue is no way to handle it either ;)

Well Ilike to see the whole picture before dissing things. It's a matter of fairness

Also from EFI-X forum (FAQ):

"Q. Why Can't I update to 10.5.6 when it isn't even out yet?

A. 10.5.6 as far as things are now does *not* break anything. But the thing is, even developers have received an unusually incomplete update so far. This probably happened in order to keep the specs of the new machines a secret until release. Wouldn't have been the first time. But as a matter of safety, Whitedragon advised EFI-X users to wait up a second when either the update is out or when we claim it is safe to update.

It was just a measure of extra security, as for now we have no reasons to believe 10.5.6 could break up our installations "

So please don't feel bad for me ;)

Thanks Schmacintosh! It's good to see BOTH sides of the topic covered.

At this point I don't put so much faith in Apple doing the right thing. They messed up the Macbooks by not including Firewire, they never released the Macbook Touch and now they are getting rid of their most affordable Mac ever - the Mac Mini. I'm tired of Apple making bad judgements like this, so I'll get a EFi-X instead and make what I need for a desktop and then get a Gigabyte 912M tablet for the small laptop that I've been waiting for. Sorry Apple. I can't give you my money if you won't come out with sensible products.

Maybe it's more like..."no problem with updates after regular firmware updates". Let THEM do the patching :D

You bring up some very good points. What are mac users supposed to do if Apple (as so recently proven true) continues to push their hardware in a direction that is contrary to the hardware needs of a particular segment of their user base? Given the opportunity I believe said user base will find alternative hardware to run their software of choice. That is, it is no coincidence that EFI-X in the USA is backordered beyond their expectation. Apple is in many ways causing this trend. I for one will not go quietly. Although I have always been a mac user in my home I will most certainly choose to utilize a product such as EFI-X given that the transition to custom hardware with their product is quite painless. A "normal" hackintosh is fine for a mac hack job that I like to play with; however, if I am going to set up some sort of custom hardware mac for my family system it is going to have to be rather seamless. A family of mac users will not put up with a periodic escapade by the man of the house into the archaic world of the unix terminal to get things working again. I might not mind it at all, but my wife will not allow it. I will keep watching and following how things go with EFI-X as I put together my wish list and start to acquire the custom hardware for my next EFI-X hackintosh. If everything goes south with EFI-X (which would be a shock I do not expect), then I will simply sell the acquired hardware and see about getting a certified Apple Macintosh. Everything depends on Apple and how they treat their user base and EFI-X.

Absolutely! Apple could get rid of companies like EFi-X by simply coming out with products like an updated Mac Mini, a MID-sized desktop, and a tablet. Demand IS there for these types of products and when Apple doesn't produce them it causes a vacuum which other companies (like EFi-X) then fill. People aren't as picky about the hardware that they buy as they are about the OS that uses it. They want to run OS X, and if Apple won't offer products that do this in the right equipment categories then other companies will. For example; I need to buy at least three more Macs, two small/mid-sized desktops and a tablet. If EFi-X works out the bugs on their product before Apple releases a new Mac mini or mid-sized desktop, then I'll just buy EFi-X and build my own. If Gigabyte starts to ship their M912M to the states before Apple release a tablet (Q1 2009?) then I'll get the Gigabyte and add OS X to it myself. And to make matters even worse, now Apple is removing Firewire on the equipment that they do make, so those models are for some people non-existent too. Like many others, I just want to be able to run OS X on the appropriate equipment, and if Apple doesn't want our money by making and selling that equipment, then that's fine too, people will just buy it from other manufactures like EFi-X ;) It's great that OS X is such an incredible OS that now everyone wants to use it, but now Apple needs to actually have the right equipment to run it on.
