It's a higher quality output than the headphone out(less opamps for the signal to go through and get corrupted.) I've seen the connectors for sale along with the pinouts and a few configurations to truley make your own. It's a lot more work and you need good eyes and a steady solder hand but that is what interests me. YMMV. This would be a good one for the wife though. I especialy like the lego one.
