BBrown
I think I am going to take "Vixta" for a test drive. 'Vixta' Linux distro mimics Vista's look and feel http://apcmag.com/vixta_linux_distro_mimic...ok_and_feel.htm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119532-who-needs-vista-when-you-can-get-vixta/ Share on other sites
Alessandro17
They should be careful. Lindows (now Linspire) was sued by Microsoft just because their name sounded too similar to Windows. In this case the have gone much further. impulsion
ok i have questions, what are the benefits for someone that has never used linux before? how hard is it to learn what linux has to offer? how hard is it to find compatable apps? i have no programming experience what so ever. i think the most i've gotten into was basic dos back in the early 90's. how hard would it be for me to pick up linux? Btw, that logon screen looks XPish to me, not Vistaish..maybe I'm seeing things. Just take a look at 'Welcome'.That font is the same used on Windows XP.That could be a huge problem... aduffbrew
Do they really want to be compared to Vista? Why not Linynx and an Macintosh look and feel? fatshitcat
To be honest, I really don't trust this distro. And Microsoft did the right thing when it sued Lindows. A lot of people who thought it was just a typo were fooled when buying a laptop running Lindows. FrankOS_Scripting
Humm, it's new Microsoft sued someone Seriously, good job for laughing at the face of mister Gates and his "own" products copy from somewhere (I don't need to quote whos). That's make even spicy the life Home brew analysis from this quote * Absolutely free, in every sense. * ABN - Absolutely No Config. * User-Friendly. * Eye-catching. * Familiar look and Feel. 1. Not very expensive compared to XP Pro copy retail at 120$ 2. No config means no blue screens? 3. Friendly for my grandma of 78 years old who hates too much {censored} of windows on his screen 4. Attractive and more powerful than the sluggish graphic UI of "ViSta" 5. I don't feel I'm gonna be infected by a virus on my restore or on Outlook express... :censored2: Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119532-who-needs-vista-when-you-can-get-vixta/#findComment-846642 Share on other sites
Alessandro17
And Microsoft did the right thing when it sued Lindows. A lot of people who thought it was just a typo were fooled when buying a laptop running Lindows. To be noticed that Microsoft lost: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_vs._Lindows As early as 2002, a court rejected Microsoft's claims, stating that Microsoft had used the term "windows" to describe graphical user interfaces before the product, Windows, was ever released, and that the windowing technique had already been implemented by Xerox and Apple many years before[1]. Microsoft kept seeking retrial, but in February 2004, a judge rejected two of Microsoft's central claims[2]. The judge denied Microsoft's request for a preliminary injunction and raised "serious questions" about Microsoft's trademark. Microsoft feared that a court may define "Windows" as generic and result in the loss of its status as a trademark. In July 2004, Microsoft offered to settle with Lindows.[3] As part of this licensing settlement, Microsoft paid an estimated $24 million cash (for a case that Microsoft itself brought), and Lindows transferred the Lindows trademark to Microsoft and changed their name to Linspire. Many analysts concluded that Microsoft appeared to have been unwise in choosing generic names for many of its products, such as Office for an office productivity suite, Pocket PC for software for a pocket-sized computer, and Project for project scheduling software. cain.
Still, it's just a plain ripoff and thus not legal. I'll download it as long as it's available (which won't be too long), because Vista w/out Vista _should_ be better than Vista xD Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119532-who-needs-vista-when-you-can-get-vixta/#findComment-846803 Share on other sites
BBrown
...Still, it's just a plain ripoff... I don't know if it is a rip off since it is free. Usually things that you pay for can be classified as ripoffs. ...and thus not legal... Perhaps. But that still needs to be proved in the court of law. I haven't tried it yet but I suspect it will likely be as buggy if not more buggy than Vista since it is a new distro under development. Having said that, it is a Fedora based Distro and Fedora has a good track record, historically. As long as it doesn't get pulled, which it may if MS threatens with law suits, it may become more polished and better over time as the developers finetune and tweak it and work out the bugs. Whether you like it or hate it, I think it does have some potential. Just my two cents. TOS 1.04
Haha, I don't know why anyone would want the look and feel of vista anyway... I find all of you people complaining that some free software is a rip-off to be hilarious, yes lets revoke everyones right of creativity and prevent them from releasing software that they have written for free that has a similar or even exact functionality or look to other software. ARE YOU INSANE. why don't you just shoot yourself in the head and end your creativity here and now. Lets looks at what M$ has done in terms of free software in the past... MSIE they copied netscape made it crappier and made it free... However they used it as a sales pitch... so not only the largest monopoly in the world but also complete hypocrites.
