Hi all

I am getting all my stuff to build myself a Hackintosh in the coming week and have a few questions.

I will be using the case the PC is currently running in now which is Ubuntu 8.04. If I install my Hackintosh stuff in here and put this drive in the same box, will I be able to read it from Leopard so I can transfer all my email etc across?

ALso, just a quick check of parts of I may. I plan on buying:

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R Mobo

Intel E8400 CPU

2x 2GB GSkil 800 DDR2 Memory

nVidia 8600GT 512MB Video

This is my base list. I already have a 500GB SATAII drive to install on to, it was a Windows XP install. Regarding the video card, would it be better to get the 1GB video card (another $29.00) or would that give me no advantage in particular? I will be using the Kalyway 10.5.2 install DVD I prepared earlier.

Any advice on equipment would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Bruce

Yay! It's official - my wife is seriously sick of me dealing with crappy computers, so tomorrow after the kids sport I am off to buy the following:

GA-P35C-DS3R or ASUS P5KE Wireless Mobo - depends what they have

ASUS 8600GT 512Mb PCiE Video

Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo

4Gb (2x2Gb) G.Skill-PQ DDR2 800 memory

Pioneer SATA DVD-RW

Logitech LX710 Cordless Desktop (or maybe an LX310....)

Thermaltake Wing RS101 Case

So hopefully, really, really hopefully, by the end of the weekend I will have a functional Leo 10.5.? powered PC!

Cheers

Bruce

Edit: Fixed the Gigabyte Mobo number.

Cool, I am looking for the least pain in installing Leopard. I like the P5KE but it is more expensive than the Gigabyte board and my in-house bank has only released so much in funds :)

No, Leopard can't (oob) read the Linux formatted disk- assuming ext3 that is. I think there's an extension which will allow it to do so, but I've never tried it and I've heard that it can add some serious instability.

You might want to copy off whatever files you need from Linux to a FAT32 formatted external drive before starting your new build- or if you're setting up a multi-boot system, set up a FAT32 partition that all the OS's can read.

Ah, OK thanks. I don't have another drive big enough to handle what I want to copy over so I'll use the extension available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsx,. I used something similar in Windoze XP to access some backup Ubuntu drives I had.

Well, I got pretty much all I wanted except for the motherboard, they didn't have any Gigabyte boards that I would be comfortable with so I went with an ASUS P5K instead. I basically have the machine assembled and ready to fire up which it will be doing right after I close this one down to steal a hard drive out of.

I am off to find a thread about installing Kalyway on an ASUS P5K so I can get started.....so exciting!!! ;)

Well, not a good start. I found that the P5K has had the option to set the SATA ports to AHCI removed because of some legal wrangle with Intel so I had to go off and find out how to enable it. I came across a post on some forum that explained that I needed to install the bios 0605 from a P5KR board to get it enabled.

This is the post if anyone else is interested:

I have successfully enabled AHCI on my P5K, even though as we know Asus removed the AHCI option from about BIOS 04xx due to licencing issues over the basic Intel ICH9 south bridge compared to the ICH9R chipset. This gives you the advantages of AHCI and NCQ (providing your SATA drive supports it). My PC (XP) is smoother and more responsive, HD benchmarks are higher and boots MUCH faster with AHCI NCQ, but the topic is controversial and you are welcome to google it to decide if it is worth it for you.

1. Download the P5KR motherboard bios 0605 at

ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5KR/

and save it as p5kr0605.rom

2. Download afudos 2.11 at

ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/flash/

3. Download the Intel 32-bit Floppy Configuration Utility for Intel® Matrix Storage Manager 7.8.0.1012 11/9/2007 at

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_res...mp;submit=Go%21

4. Make a MS DOS startup floppy.

5. Take a second floppy and save the files downloaded at step 1 and 2 to it.

6. Take a third floppy and click on the file downloaded in step 3 to create an Intel installation floppy.

7. Boot your PC down and connect your HD to the JMicron SATA port.

8. Put the MS DOS startup floppy in and boot up into DOS.

9. Put the second floppy in created in step 5 and type the following command in:

afudos /n /ip5kr0605.rom

This will flash the BIOS to the latest P5KR which is identical to P5K but has ICH9R south bridge.

10. Reboot and go into the BIOS using the DEL key and on first page select AHCI instead of IDE as your SATA drive option. You may also have to go to the BOOT or STARTUP options to stipulate your HD now connected to the JMICRON as being your first boot device. Save your BIOS changes and reboot.

11. When Windows comes up, cancel all requests to install drivers. You will end up with a yellow lamation mark next to something called "PCI device". This is the new ICH9 AHCI hardware detected.

12. Put the floppy created in step 6 in and navigate to "PCI device" and manually install the driver upgrade by pointing windows to a disc you own and the .inf file described as ICH9 AHCI. Ignore windows warnings.

13. Reboot and you will see that you now have an Intel ICH9 AHCI controller installed.

14. Shut down your PC and change SATA cable on HD to fit the Intel ICH9 controller.

15. Reboot into BIOS and reset boot and drive startup options to suit your system. Save BIOS and reboot.

VOILA!!! You now have an ICH9 with AHCI and NCQ (as is specified by Intel), but obviously without RAID or Intel Matrix Manager capabilities.

You may want to first fit your HD to the Jmicron and get it all settled down before doing any of the other stuff above, and if you have issues with manually installing a driver and navigating to specified files, get a friend to help you who has this knowledge.

Now if someone could work out how to re-enable CGI (crossfire) ...................

AHCI with P5K is not necessary anymore...

(Posted with Plain P5K / newest P5K Bios / Ide Mode)

Bummer :) I have already flashed my board with the 0605 bios and have an install using AHCI. However, I have no LAN or sound and am trying to figure out how to make them work.

I (stupidly) assumed that all P5K* boards were the same hence my buying the vanilla version P5K. Not happy that I have extra work to do as I have no bloody idea what I am doing. I should have just not bought the mobo/cpu combo and gone somewhere else to get a working 100% combination OOB. This is still being typed on my Ubuntu box as the OS-X install is like an island right now and can't do squat network related... :)

The saga continues....

First post using my new Hackintosh using Safari. I managed to get the network working after a little searching. Haven't done a reboot yet since installing but it does work for now.

Onto the audio and getting my ASUS 8600GT to work fully...

1 step at a time....

Intel removed that download from their website. Probably it was outdated. Is there any possibility to get that stuff?
