b.megin
hi everybody... I just successfully installed 10.4.5 from the myz prepatched DVD, but from time to time it just switches itself off without any warning. I think this happens because of overclocking/overheat since osX doesn't seem to recognize my cpu right. Sytem Profiler shows the correct CPU name "AMD Athlon 64 3000+" but the CPU Speed is 2,5 Ghz (should be 1,8 Ghz) my BIOS doesn't allow me to switch the amd "cool and quiet" feature off or to change the clockspeed of the CPU manually. any ideas how to fix that? Is it possible to enter the corect CPUID manually? (AMD_enabler maybe?) I'm still pretty new to this so any help would be very much appreciated. thanx... d. running OSX 10.4.5 (myz prepatched DVD) natively Acer Aspire 5012 Laptop AMD Athlon 64 3000+ ATI IXP Chipset (working) ATI IXP Ac97 Audio (not working yet) ATI Radeon x-700 mobile (worked with hacks @ 10.4.3, 10.4.5 not tried yet) Bluetooth (working) Wireless (not tried yet) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11769-amd-cpu-speed-problem-overheat/ Share on other sites
numberonekiwi
I ran into the same problem when I first installed 10.4.4/5 but that was when it did not boot fully into the os (i.e apple logo on grey screen) once I applied maxxuss patched etc and logged in problem solved ( cpu now runs at 51.C ) I did not use the patched DVD but the original restore {censored} and applied the patched as maxxuss says in this web pages profiler still shows a amd 3200+/64 running @ 2.4 Ghz instead of 2.0 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11769-amd-cpu-speed-problem-overheat/#findComment-73811 Share on other sites
b.megin
how did you find out the CPU temperature in osX? any tool i tried so far tells me something like "no sensor detected" I did a re-run of maxxuss amd_enabler 1.0a... but that didn't solve the problem.... I'm still not 100% sure if it is a overheating problem... greetz. d. phor2zero
I'm fairly positive that OS X is NOT actually changing your CPU speed. I have the same problem, it's essentially reporting the CPU's maximum speed as it's actual speed. My Athlon64 3700+ runs at 2.1Ghz, but it's reported in OS X as 3.7Ghz. When I boot in VMWare though, it correctly recognizes it as 2.1Ghz. Also, Interestingly, the "About this Mac" pane correctly discovers my CPU as an AMD Athlon64 3700+ ------- but the Hardware pane in System Profiler (replaced with SPPlatformReporter from 10.4.3) only recognizes it as an ADP2,1 (Apple Development Platform) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11769-amd-cpu-speed-problem-overheat/#findComment-73996 Share on other sites

That would indeed be one heck of an OS It should come as no surprise that OSX can't detect you CPU properly because it is written specifically for a subset of Intel hardware, let alone anything from AMD. As one thread suggested, it might be possible to get the right displays by using one of 10.4.4 ACPI kext. b.megin
...after some tests i can confirm, that my "sudden switch-off" problem is indeed because of overheating... luckily my amd athlon64 3000+ has an automatic feature included in the cpu architecture that switches off the cpu if a certain temperature is reached... else osX would have probably fried my cpu... any idea how to deal with that? is there any possibility to get support for the "cool n quiet" feature of amd cpu's in osX? greetz, d. How to deal with that ? There must be something seriously wrong in your fan/heatsink to cause that. So check the fan , check that the heatsink is making PROPER contact with the cpu. The switch off temp is around 80c and let me state again that you must have something seriously screwed for a low clocked 3000+ to reach 80c Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11769-amd-cpu-speed-problem-overheat/#findComment-89466 Share on other sites

The switch off temp is around 80c and let me state again that you must have something seriously screwed for a low clocked 3000+ to reach 80c don't think so... it never happens with winXP... temperatures in WinXP are around 55c ... maximum 60c. If I run osX, after about an hour or so (depends if I run CPU intensive applications) it switches off... if I reboot immediately to WinXP CPU temperatue is around 78c... so... it's definitely osX that overheats my pc. it's an acer aspire 5012 laptop so I guess there's not much I could do to improve cooling. I did not change anything with the hardware so it is a problem with OSX. greetz... d.
