I've just got, after months of head/keyboard banging, OSx working on my PB iExtream PC.

When I boot up and OS starts I can open safari and use it fine for a few minutes (to download firefox for example) but after a random amount of time it will just stop. Safari's loading bar stops and after a few minutes it says "you are not connected to the internet"

I look in network settings and see that I have a greenlight on Ethernet and a sometimes green, sometimes amber light for network settings.

I have tried manually inputting the IP addresses etc from Vista (which connects fine every time) and these don't work, I've tried telling it to get all these details from the router but instead it gives itself an address and displays

"connected with self assigned IP address, may not be connected to the internet"

also, no matter what changes I make to the settings, after safari (or FF3) has stopped it will not even try to connect again untill I reboot.

my Ethernet is a Realtech one (will edit with exact model when back at my own PC). Drivers installed in the Kalyway install... as far as I can tell it's working fine.

connected to the Internet via cable modem plugged into a wireless router and plugged in by ethernet cable.

Any help?! its entirley possible I'm being a n00b and this is something I can fix in the router settings etc so any no OSx fixes welcome too

THANKS!

(oh and yes I've tried rebooting the router/cable modem)

PS: I live with a mac user who connects via wireless and her settings match mine and she connects no problem. All my vista PC's connect by wire or wireless without problem.

PPS: as a work arround I tried the WPN111 USB wireless dongle that came with my router and works on PC's but OSx didn't even detect it was plugged in.

Stand down red-alert, although it didn't the first time I tried it - installing the ethernet drivers again seems to have fixed this and I'm posting from my hackintosh!

scratch that - what ever temporary fix this did has since gone splat and it's back to it's old trick, randomly assigns itself a new IP address and freezes up.

anyone got a clue why on earth this happens?!

I used to have a similar problem before. Here's what I did to try to correct the error with various results:

- set your wifi MTU to 1492 in your ethernet options (this is a long shot, but worth a try)

- disable the "flow-control" (or auto-sense) option in your ethernet options

- set the card's speed manually

The only other thing I could think of is to try a different kext package for your card or a different OSX "release" altogether.

I would try to find some info on that card you mentioned but I need the exact name and model.

Cheers,

Hi

I have exactly the same problem, with the same dongle. The thing is, I had it all working BEFORE I turned on wpa2 security in my router. Without any security it was fine. Now browsing for a few minutes crashes, and I have to reboot to fix it, but the same thing happens.

What kind of security do have? (If any)

@ Boris99

I am using a wired connection ethernet cable direct to the router. Although the router does use WPA serurity, I can't turn this off however because although the network is mineI share it with several other housemates who wouldn't appreciate suddenly having no internet security, but cheers.

@ Hecker

Thanks these are one of the few areas I didn't poke about it - I'll boot into Vista, find out the details of the card and set up those manually in OSx cheers!

however:

"The only other thing I could think of is to try a different kext package for your card or a different OSX "release" altogether."

I'm afraid you could be talking chinease for all the sense that made to me. The only thing I understand about kext's is that they contain "strings" and these are long bits of compleat gibberish :D

sorry im a Windows boy at heart if it's not config.sys I'll need a bit of an idiot guide ;)

I'll let you know if any of the manual fixes work. Ta

Kext files ie. packages are files that enable hardware functionality on our macs (and hacks) and usually, need to be added/configured depending on the hardware you're running on. You can think of them as drivers although they really aren't.

The most important thing is to find the exact card model you're using, in order to figure out if there's any way of getting it to run.

What I mean by "release" is that you can try out another version of OSX86. There are many different DVDs (Kalyway, Zepyroth, JaS, etc), that the kind hackers/developers have put together for our enjoyment. Sometimes trying out a different DVD may help because the author may have included files that were not on the DVD you're running now.

Good luck!

Hi again.

Right I have a:

Realtek RTL8139/810x Fast Family Ethernet NIC

I go now to boot into OSx and change those settings, will advise how it goes.

Ideally I would like to fix this without having to reinstall, if it is an issue with kexts, can these be "transplanted" into an existing install (like installing new drivers)?

cheers.

----------------------------------

Changes appeared to make no difference. OSx got an IP address ***.**8.1.2 - which is in the range that the other PC's and Macs in the house all have, but minuets later had assigned itself ***.**8.87.75 which of course means it's not connected, setting this manually to the right IP doesn't help.

options I have

SPEED: 100baseTX / 10baseT/UTP | I've selected 100baseTX although neither appears to change anything

DUPLEX: full / half / full with flow control | I've tried all of them, non make any difference, have left it at half

MTU: was at 1500, have tried 1492, again didn't seem to do anything

Hope this helps somehow, Have to confess I'm not sure what half of it is about, but this is the last (albeit very annoying) bug before I can safely say I have a fully working Hack so if any ones got any ideas please shout!

Thanks

Chris.

yes I can definitely try that, my only concern is the reason I need to get this Hackintosh working is to be able to work from home, started a new job in film* and we work on Mac and Linux, so I need my powerful PC to be working with all 4 cores while in "mac mode" (or the applications I need to run... wont)I'll reboot now and try that and let you know how it goes, Cheers

*no alas I don't get paid enough to be able to waste several thousand £s to by a mac of equivalent power to the PC

-------------------------------------

Okay well this is me browsing in Safari so for the time being at least I have internet on the Mac, it's been known to run for 20+ minuets before it cuts out however so let me keep going and see if it can manage an hour or so without deciding to assign it's self a random new IP cheers kozlowski, fingers crossed

PS: that was odd I clicked fast reply but it added it to this post like an edit...?

Brilliant, my internet seems to be stabilized and the video editing/compositing software I need has installed and runs fine! ... although yes, Mac now thinks I only have 1 2.3ghz cpu instead of 4!

I guess I'll just have to run Hackintosh this way until I need to do some CPU intensive work and then restart with all 4 cores.

Thanks alot kozlowski!! great work-around

if anyone knows a full fix that lets me surf and use my full PC power do give me a shout.

cheers again for the help

Yeah i know its weird. For me I tried several NICs and Wifi's before I tried this workaround. Its a shame that you have to sacrifice 3 extra cores

But still I guess your work will be more pleasant that before (at least for now).

Lots of people complain about this problem, even people with real Macs, so don't worry, I guess its something to be fixed in the next Leopard versions.
