Hi!

I thought that I am going to share my experiences with building an El cheapo OSX learning box.

First of all, I would like to say thank to the authors of this site, for giving people a chance to learn new OS and share experiences and knowlege...

Refer to my earlier thread to see exactly what PC hardware components I got:

Check my hardware spects here:

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=10595&hl=

The bad:

I started by installing the prepatched 10.4.4 install DVD, but it would not work very well, no matter how hard I tried.

First sign of trouble was the fact that my System Profiler in 10.4.4 would just crash. It would not work from DVD installer or a Hard Drive. Basically when I tried to run the System Profiler it would give me an "unknown hardware error" and no summary of my system.

Second problem, was the fact that I could not boot straight to OSX on a hard drive. Had to press F8 with DVD inserted in a DVDRW drive. Then, to start the OSX from Hard Drive, I had to type: rd=disk0s2

Third problem was with my Ethernet card. It would simply not get detected in spite of being on a "supported" list. Realtek 8139 would not work at all. Tried to copy 10.4.3 IONetworking kext to to available.

At this point, I have decided to revert to 10.4.3 install DVD as I have noticed that many people have experienced a high rate of success with 10.4.3 installations, where most of the hardware devices would get recognized with no major issues.

The good:

At first, I could not install 10.4.3 on the hard drive at all. The DVD based installer would give me an error message stating that it would be unable to start MacOSX from the volume, even though it was formated in a proper FS (Mac OS Extended Journaled).

After 2 hours of playing around, I have accidentally figure the way around it:

- First Format the entire drive in DOS File System (AKA FAT32)

- Then go ahead and choose your partition scheme (1, 2, 3 partitions ,etc, etc)

- Format all of your partitions in DOS File System again

- Pick one of the partitions to be your OSX partition and format it again with the target, Mac OS Extended Journaled, partition.

That worked for me, not sure if it will work for your installation, but this is what I did to get my install going. I have also double checked the System Profiler and I have noticed that it was giving the info about my PC without crashing (good sign) and that the build-in Ethernet card was being detected fine too :hysterical:.

OSX installed fine, I rebooted, and then Darwin x86 started booting just fine off the Hard Drive. I was presented with the welcome/register screen.

Now everything works as far as I can tell.

System Profiler is not displaying info about my sound card, but it works great anyhow.

ITUNES works

There is one oddity though. My Apple USB keyboard and any USB mouse do not work. I am not sure why, but they do not.

I am able to mount a USB flash drive and an external USB hard drive with no problems, but the USB Keyboard and mouse just do not wake up...

PS2 Keyboard and Mouse work just great though, also, through a KVM switch so I am happy.

Last but not least, my hackintosh does not restart...

It shuts down and sleeps (yes, sleeps) fine though...

Other than that, so far I have experienced a periodic crash of the application, but the PC itself is stable and usable. Overall a great learning box, with good parameters for small $$$$, which is exactly what the goal of my project was and is....

P.S. I am typing this from my hackintosh running Firefox 1.5.1 stable.

Good luck with your OSX installation.

Hey there,

I'm right on the cusp of ordering the hardware for my new X86 box. The hardware I have is below. My cost is about $700. Care to make any comments? All of the hardware is listed on the Wiki site as compatible.

Looks nice, but to be honest, I would save a bit on memory and go vith 2.5 CAS Corsair Value Select. Also, there is an extra comment on Wiki which raises an eye:

"Lan, SATA(ICH7), Graphics work like a charm on osx86 8f1111A(g). Need to edit AppleAzaliaAudio.kext to get sound output (2.1 mode) working. Sound input doesn't work. Delete AppleHDA.kext if kernel panic happens because of the integrated sound ALC882."

So, be prepared to do some minor kext tweaking in order to make your sound working in 10.4.3

;)

WRONG memory -- you want DDR2 240 pin with this mobo:

Also, consider a Intel D 805 -- a little less performance, a lot less cost.
