Used koverg's patch for the ATIRadeon9700.kext and now QE/CI is working on my x300 Mobility! (0x5460)

Running at a resolution of 1600x1200 (set in boot.plist)

DVDs even play correctly now.

All the hardware in my 6000 now works except for the intel wireless, but I don't use it very often.

I do have mouse tearing, but it is minimized with mousepose. If this is eventually fixed, I don't see a reason why OSX can't be the primary OS on this computer.

I have the same Laptop Dell Inspiron 6000 with x300 Mobility! (0x5460) I cant to get work with the koverg's patch. Can you tell me how to do it. so I can dubble check. I doing the right thing. Do wish I had a copy of your kexts.

Chrees

just followed the readme included with the 0.2 version of his patch. readme does have errors though, don't know if they are critical or not (people seem to get it to work).

but here is word for word what you should type to get the patch to work (make sure you have the original ATIRadeon9700.kext before patching)

sudo ./patch9700.sh 54 60

sudo nano /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeon9700.kext/Contents/Info.plist

-now type ctrl-w to search for 5B60

-replace 5B60 with 5460

-ctrl-x

-yes save it

sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache

sudo kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions

-Repair disk permissions with Disk Utility

-Reboot

i got it working on my Inpiron, and just replaced the Intel card with an Atheros card, and now I have working wireless, too!

The native resolution on mine is 1280x800, and I can't go higher than 1024x768. If only we could get our native widescreen resolution.......

it would be nice to have native res...

I haven't taken my laptop apart at all, is it easy to replace the built-in wireless card? How much did your atheros one cost?

intel wireless won't work.

i bought a dell truemobile 1450 wireless card for my insp. 6000; got it on ebay from a canadian guy for US$25; should work fine when i get it this week: will report back!

i didn't manage to get dvd/divx/xvid to play correctly though (jitter problem) i am using VLC; @inxsrt: what program/setting are you using?

My laptop is working now with QE and Core ATi x300. liitle prob with the mouse. I know that easy to get sorted out. No wirelees. can't to get my screen res. upto 1680x1050. I am using 1280x1024 not wide scrren :hysterical:

Sound gone wired in FCP dont know why. before sound was ok in 10.3 when using FCP

Yeah, I got my video working with Koverg's patch too..I just won a Netgear WG511T on eBay (right after I bid, I found a Dell 1450 that I should have bought instead ;) )...according to the wiki, it works, so I'll find out soon I suppose!

It was really easy to replace. I paid 30 bucks shipped for a new one from mwave.com. It's a gigabyte model.

it looks like there are two Gigabyte models for miniPCI cards...

GN-WIAG02 (108Mb Model, $21)

and

GN-W101GS (54Mb model, $18.50)

Do you know which of the two you bought?

so great, I did what you have described here, got the openGL and quartz supported(the chess program works now)

however, I have few questions

1. my x300 card is only 64M, how come it claims 128M?

2. intrinsic res 1280x800, right now, I can only make it 1024x768. can I change it with "Graphics Mode"="1280x800x24"? seems doesnt work

3. right, there is a mouse shadow left from time to time.

thanks for the info

Got the x300 working in my WUXGA capable 6000 at 1600x1200 using koverg's second patch -- but no luck achieving 1920x1200. I have read through this thread and the thread regarding koverg's patch, and I believe nobody has reported achieving widescreen resolutions -- is it correct to say that this is impossible with current technology? Is this still an issue with those being non-VESA resolutions? Can this issue be resolved?

As a side note, my firewire port IS working, kind of. I was able to mount a drive and move files -- no intensive testing. And I was able to connect my Sony HDV video camera (HDR-HC1) and to control the camera, but iMovie would always only display a green background and no video, even after importing. Sound did preview and import correctly. I was just doing this for testing purposes, so I didn't do too much research on why this might be happening.

FYI, I'm using 10.4.5.

I was extremely impressed with the performance of VLC playing a TS file over the network -- it played with nearly no dropped frames, much better than either of my G4 PBs.

I find it nothing short of amazing the range of compatibility that Apple has given OSX on Intel -- while I totally respect the hard work of the community in making this happen, this can't be an accident on Apple's side. It seems most clearly a strategy to win hearts and minds. This is breathing new life and utility into this Dell machine for me and there is no question in my mind that if Apple offered a fully supported version of the OS for non-Apple hardware, I would pay for it.

It is the GN-WIAG02. Works great.

There is a page on Dell's web site that tells you how to do it. Just search google for Inspiron 6000 service manual and you should find the page on Dell. It's not complicated at all.

I have a Super-G router, too. I wonder if it works at 108mbps in OSX. File transfers seem as fast as Windows, but I haven't done a speed test.

Does the GN-WIAG02 support WPA and/or WEP when connecting to Airport networks? What chipset does it use?

This is a great tip and cheap upgrade -- thanks!

The only reason it works is that the 10.4.5 wifi kext added support for Atheros chipsets. I think just about any Super-G Atheros chipset will work. This one was the cheapest I found.

I don't know about WPA, but I use WEP, and it works fine. (I don't understand how people can not use encryption. My neighbor's whole hard drive is shared and available for anyone to look at.)

4. one more thing, the screensaver doesnt work anymore

same here, inspiron 6000 x300 128mb running fine on 10.4.5 at 1600x1200x32@60 (ta koverg) .... gotta get some widescreen action tho!! next to useless for web design etc without using my external monitor...

if anyone gets a widescreen solution pls post back here!

You can control this behavior in the BIOS setup.

No widescreen resolutions are supported yet on OSX86, so you'll need to choose either to stretch or to have black space -- if you stretch, then you're dealing with some distortion. I prefer to have the correct aspect ratio (and let it letterbox), but waiting anxiously for a solution for widescreen to come along, although there doesn't seem to be a solution on the horizon from what I've read.

im getting a 6000 tomorrow,as far as the resolutions working , does it stretch across the whole screen or do a letterbox type deal?

More specifically, in the BIOS options, expand the Video tree, go to LCD Panel Expansion, and then set it to Off or Enabled to use the actual resolution or to stretch

this is for the A09 version
