I just got an iMac 20" 2.0 Ghz which i understand it uses the T7300 CPU and i was wondering if is possible to upgrade to the T7700 2.4 Ghz CPU?

or is there any other processor compatible with it?

i've seen some thread around here about a guy swapping CPUs on a white imac but how about the Aluminum Models, specifically the 20".

Thanks

Well you can definitely put in a T7700, if you go through the trouble of taking apart your iMac...

Here's a good take apart guide BTW

I checked it out, and the compatible Merom Cpu's are T7500, T7700, and T7800. But even better, you can put in a new Penryn chip, for even better performance! This is highly recommended instead. Compatible Penryn CPU's are T9300, T9500 and X9000.

Here is proof : Upgrade M1330 to Penryn (remember, the iMac uses the same Santa Rosa mobile platform as notebooks like the M1330)

Wow Cool, sounds great, but i don't know about going that far with penryn, i remember reading a thread somewhere with a guy trying to upgrade his 24" imac with a penryn and didn't work out that good, the bus Speed dropped to 400Mhz, but i could be wrong.

interesting information non the less.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I have recently tried to upgrade my 1st generation intel imac to a t9300. it definitely does not work. After a little more research, the santa rosa chips have to have a santa rosa motherboard, that of which the iMac does not have. Now, I am stuck with trying to sell my cpu on ebay. :P
