Differences between kernel versions?

So I made the mistake of thoughtlessly downloading the 10.5.3 upgrade. Two days later, I'm back up and running, but not without having to do the USB kernel/system.kext version matching fix to get my external drives working again. I did notice that at some point, I was on kernel version 9.3 and now I'm down on 9.2.

 

Question is, what difference is there between running 9.3 and 9.2? And should I bother trying to update if everything runs fine?
