ive lost hope.

my computer is fairly quick (quicker than a lot of G5's anyway) without the damn driver. and i dont know how to write code for anything except websites, so i wont get around to making my own driver either.

i tend to just ignore these nVidia driver threads. empty promises, blah blah blah.. who cares.

no no you misunderstand

i was wondering what happens since their are not nvidia drivers for osx86

does the screen stay blank, look odd, monochrome etc?

No it does not. It just uses a VESA 2.0/3.0 driver that limits your reslutions and refresh rates. If you want true hardware acceleration, get an ATi Radeon X300/X600/X700/X800. (Use Koverg's patch for X700/X800, most of these types of cards should work though, as reported by other forum users here.)

It may be quicker than some G5's, but you won't be doing anything OpenGL related unless you get a supported ATi card, or make an Intel computer with at least an Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900.

:)

maybe this is naïve, I'm no developer... but I'm thinking maybe everyone is going about the nVidia problem a little from the wrong end... would it be at all possible to write code that would make the nVidia emulate the supported ATI cards?

forgive me in advance, I know it's probably a dead end.. but at least developers know exactally what an ATI cards architecture is... and no one seems to know exactally what the mac drivers for nvidia do. I'm sure if it is possible it would slow the gpu down, but anything would be nicer for me then 1024x768 in that god awful refresh rate that's melting my brain! (and quite possibly made me think of this at all.

Anyone that codes know if this would be possible?

Thanks

Awn

I'm hoping that when Apple releases the intel G5 tower, or whatever their gonna call it that they will have to release compatible Nvidia drivers. The quadro 4500 and geforce 6800 are available options and they'll need drivers. So I'm just gonna wait around until then and use my GMA950 in the mean time, at least it supports QE.

nobody knows yet. You can try asking Steve Jobs in an email... I doubt he'll get back to you though. :dev:

Yeah, like Glidewrappers emulate the 3dfx-cards? But both nVidia and Ati are DirectX&OpenGl cards...so what's to emulate? The architecture? Or the Ati-calls, sorta like M-us did with his SSE3-->SSE2 patches?

The refreshrate that stays fixed for now @60Hz when running trough VESA and truely kills the eyes, but...get's solved when you switch to a LCD display.

It's what I did recently and it worked miracles.

I don't think we want to emulate the ATI mouse tearing problem. I have a 6600GT and a X300 and the X300 is sitting in the closet right now. Forget about Macvidia but be patient young grasshoppers; Intel G5 towers are coming...

And I bet that they will have ATI cards as well of the X1900 variety. If nVidia can come out with a card that not only trumps the X1900 series on performance but on price as well, I think I'll spontaneously combust.

Why should Apple put in the extra effort to get nVidia working on their OS as well when they've already got ATI going perfectly fine? Apple has been buddy buddy with ATI a lot longer than nVidia from what I've seen and nVidia doesn't seem to get much right lately. But we'll see.

Apple knows that there is a demand for nVidia kexts so that people who specifically use OS X illegally on their PCs will be able to have all the fancy features for themselves, why should they give the OS X x86 community the satisfaction?

Who knows... the R600 is supposedly going to be released around November/December. Since Conroe isn't due til at least Q3, seems like that the R600 may land in time to be included in whatever they call the new machines.

My 6800 Go is working all right despite the 1024x780 lock. I just wish macVidia or someone else could make a driver that would allow video and 3d to work at a proper speed. Allowing widescreen and such would also be nice.

You know that you can give a resolution in the com.apple.boot.plist file?

Add this:

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>your resolution (1280x1024x32@75)</string>

It works on my beautiful vesa driver :)

I would do that except for the fact that i have a 1440x900 lcd. That's why I can't wait for some widescreen breakthroughs.

Here's my boot:

The large pause is an error with NVidia.kext

  • 1 month later...

*watches video while thinking of his own OSX boot since the install of macvidia while listening to FDRs "Arsenal Of Democracy" Speech wondering how we can beat the nazis without personal computers but now a 7800GT cant work on OSX*

all i can say is - i know your pain my friends... i know your pain
