Run Vanilla OS X El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra or Mojave in VMware Workstation on a Windows Host I wanted to make a simple guide on how to create a vanilla OS X El Capitan virtual machine running on a Windows host. The virtual machine should be useful for testing El Capitan and also for creating installers for use on a real machine/hackintosh. There are many guides and videos on the net about running OS X on Windows machines using pre-made VMWare disk images but you can never guarantee what else is in there…. I’ve gathered info for this guide from various threads in the Multibooting and Virtualisation section of this forum eg Workstation 11/12, Player 7/12, Fusion 7/8 and ESXi 6 Mac OS X Unlocker 2 by @Donk How to Install OS X 10.x from Snow Leopard to El Capitan in VMware Workstation 10/12, Player 6/8 or ESXi 5/6 by @MSOK HOW TO: Create a bootable El Capitan ISO for VMware Credit and thanks to @Donk, @Albert Nietsnie and @MSOK for all their hard work in creating and testing the VMware Unlocker program. Requirements Intel PC with four or more CPU cores running Windows 7 X64 or later OS (2 or more cores needed for OS X) 4GB or more RAM (2GB or more will be needed for OS X) Hard Disk with at least 40GB free for Virtual Machine VMware Workstation 12 or later VMware Unlocker 2.0.7 or later Install OS X El Capitan app and Mac or Hack to prepare installation iso <-- Now, no longer necessary to have previous access to a Mac or Hack by building the Installer.app from scratch - see post#41 16GB or larger exFAT formatted USB stick to transfer El Capitan iso from Mac/Hack to Host PC Prepare Installation ISO on your Mac or Hack 1. On your Mac or Hack, download "Install OS X El Capitan.app" from the App Store into your Applications folder. 2. Unmount any attached install image/InstallESD.dmg (if currently mounted) by rebooting the system or running the hdiutil unmount command in terminal eg 3. Download and unzip the CECI.tool (attached to this post) into your ~/Downloads folder. The commands in this executable script are shown below for informational purposes…. 4. Open OS X terminal, then run the following commands to execute the script: cd downloads chmod +x CECI.tool ./CECI.tool 5. At the end of the process, you will have an El Capitan iso on your desktop - copy this onto an exFAT formatted USB for use on the PC Host later. Updates: @shela has created an ISO generating script compatible with OS X 10.6-10.12: create_osx_iso post #362. See post#30 for macOS_iso_cim.tool script to create ISO for macOS 10.13+ using Apple's createinstallmedia utility. Install and Patch VMware Workstation 12 on your PC 1. Download and install VMWare Workstation Player 12 or later 2. Download and extract Unlocker 2.0.7 or later to your USB stick… 3. Run the win-install.cmd as administrator by right clicking the file in Windows explorer or run it from an Administrative Command Prompt. Create an El Capitan Virtual Machine 1. Double click on the VMware Workstation 12 Player icon on your desktop and click “Create a New Virtual Machine”. Choose “I will install the operating system later” at the How will you install screen…. 2. Select Apple Mac OS X as the Guest operating system and OS X 10.11 as the version. By default, an OS X 10.11 folder will be created in your Documents\Virtual Machines folder. 3. Under Specify Disk Capacity, you can leave the default 40GB or set a larger value. I personally store the virtual disk as a single file. Click Finish and you will see OS X 10.11 on the Main Screen of Workstation 12. 4. Next, we need to edit the virtual machine settings to map the virtual SATA CD/DVD drive to the El Capitan installation iso we created earlier. 5. To prevent the virtual machine from crashing in Windows, the virtualHW.version set in the vmx configuration file needs to be changed from 12 to 10 (alternatively, the line smc.version = "0" can be added to the file). The OS X 10.11.vmx file can be edited with the WordPad program (navigate to the OS X 10.11 virtual machine folder with Windows Explorer and right click on the file to open in WordPad). 6. For HW10, set USB compatibility to USB 2.0, otherwise your mouse and keyboard might not work in the virtual machine. 7. Finally click “Play virtual machine” Installation of El Capitan Installation should be relatively straight forward, just following the prompts of the OS X installer: 1. Select language, agree to legal terms 2. Use Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu to erase and format the virtual hard drive as a single partition GUID Mac OS X Extended. I’ve named the drive Macintosh HD but you can enter whatever you like eg El_Capitan. 3. Quit DU and choose Macintosh HD to install El Capitan on. 4. After 20-30 min (depending on how fast your system is), the installation will complete and the VM will automatically reboot… 5. At the welcome screen, choose your country and keyboard layout. You can skip transfer information, location services and logging in with your Apple ID if you wish… 6. Create a User Account and select your Time Zone. You can skip sending diagnostics and usage data to Apple…. 7. Finally, you will arrive at the El Capitan Desktop. You should eject the Installation iso now by right clicking and selecting “Eject OS X Base System”. This will allow you to install VMware Tools…. 8. After rebooting, the VM can now be resized or run at full screen resolution. Audio and network/internet should also work OOB. SMBIOS Customization and iMessage Vars To make the Virtual Machine more "Mac like", you can edit the vmx file to add unique identifiers from a real Mac's SMBIOS - eg for an iMac 11,3 SMBIOS, you can enter the following lines.... smbios.reflectHost = "FALSE" board-id.reflectHost = "FALSE" board-id = "Mac-F2238BAE" hw.model.reflectHost = "FALSE" hw.model = "iMac11,3" serialNumber.reflectHost = "FALSE" serialNumber = "W80#######6" Refer How to spoof real Mac in VMware - Multi-booting and Virtualisation. The critical variables for iMessage/Facetime activation are MLB & ROM. By default, VMware "reflects" the host's MLB and ROM since it assumes you are running the OSX guest on a real Mac host - see post#42 by @Donk. If the host is a Windows PC, the following lines need to be added to the vmx file (requires virtualHW.version 12 and smc.version = "0").... efi.nvram.var.ROM.reflectHost = "FALSE" efi.nvram.var.MLB.reflectHost = "FALSE" system-id.enable = "TRUE" and the MLB, ROM and optionally system-id entered manually eg efi.nvram.var.MLB = "W80######BA1A" (MLB can be 13 or 17 characters long, alphanumeric string) efi.nvram.var.ROM = "<=>?@A" (ROM is entered here as a 6 character ASCII string) uuid.bios = "## ## ## ## ## ## ## ##-## ## ## ## ## ## ## ##" <---Optional (if you want to inject a given system-id hexadecimal value) Note the output for ROM from imessage_debug is a 12 character hexadecimal that needs to be entered here as a 6 character ASCII string eg using an Hex to ASCII converter we find that "3c3d3e3f4041" hex is equivalent to "<=>?@A". Vanilla Mavericks and Yosemite The same VM settings for El Capitan will also boot and run vanilla installations of OS X Mavericks and Yosemite . Attached to this post are installer scripts to create bootable Mavericks (CMI.tool) and Yosemite (CYI.tool) ISOs for VirtualBox and VMware. With the respective OS X installer apps in the Applications folder, download and run the installer tools using terminal ie To create a Mavericks ISO on your desktop cd downloads chmod +x CMI.tool ./CMI.tool To create a Yosemite ISO on your desktop cd downloads chmod +x CYI.tool ./CYI.tool Here is a screenshot of the VM running Mavericks 10.9.5... Hi guys, this thread is to show you a new and open source app, created by me, that I called TINU: The name means: TINU Is Not #####, the U refers to a popular software that is used to create macOS hackintosh installers (that for good reasons is banned on this forum), but the aim of the name is to explain that this app is a totally different thing from that software and works in a totally different way. This app basically is a graphical interface for the createinstallmedia executable that is inside the macOS and Mac OS X installer apps, it is capable to create a bootable installer completely vanilla like what you do using the command line method, and also this method is recommended by apple itself. In addition to this, this app provvides to you simplicity and flexybility, and lets you to avoid most of the steps needed with every other app. TINU allows you to create easily a bootable macOS installer without messing around with command line stuff and without using disk utility, all you need to do is use the app and then install clover on the usb drive once TINU has finished or leave it as is if you want to use it on a real Mac. The virtual machine should be useful for testing El Capitan and also for creating installers for use on a real machine/hackintosh. At the end of the process, you will have an El Capitan iso on your desktop - copy this onto an exFAT formatted USB for use on the PC Host later. Create an El Capitan Virtual Machine in VirtualBox 1. Open the VirtualBox program and click the "New" button to create a new VM. 2. Select Mac OS X and Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan (64 -bit) for Operating System type and version. I named my Virtual Machine "El_Capitan", then clicked next... 3. Leave the Memory size at the recommended 2048 MB, then click next. 4. Choose to "Create a virtual hard disk now", then click the create button. 5. For the hard disk file type, the default is VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) but I have selected VMDK for inter-operability with VMWare. Click next... 6. For Storage on physical hard disk, I have chosen the default Dynamically allocated (grows larger to a set limit as you need more disk space). 7. On the File location and size screen, you can set the location of the new virtual hard disk and its size - I recommend changing disk size to 40GB or larger. When you click the create button, you will now see your new VM in the VirtualBox main GUI. 8. Click the settings button on the Main Menu to tweak a few settings.... a. On the System/Motherboard tab in Boot Order, you can uncheck the Floppy Drive (who has these now?) b. On the System/Processor tab, you can increase the allocated CPU cores to 2 c. On the Display tab, you can increase the allocated Video Memory to 128MB d. On the Storage tab, click on the icon of the Optical Drive and select "Choose Virtual Optical Disk File". Navigate and select the El Capitan ISO we created earlier... e. Click the OK button to finalise the VM settings. Patch El Capitan vbox configuration file with DMI Settings from a Mac 1. From the start menu, type cmd and click run as administrator to open an administrative command prompt. 2. Choose a Mac Model similar to your host system, then type the following lines, followed by <enter> after each line. Make sure you first close all VirtualBox Windows and the VirtualBox program, otherwise any changes you make won't stick... Close the command prompt window. Installation of El Capitan We are now ready to start the El_Capitan Virtual Machine.... Installation should be relatively straight forward, just following the prompts of the OS X installer: 1. Select language, agree to legal terms 2. Use Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu to erase and format the virtual hard drive as a single partition GUID Mac OS X Extended. I named my drive "Macintosh HD" but you can enter whatever you like eg El_Capitan. 3. Quit DU and choose Macintosh HD to install El Capitan on. 4. After 20-30 min (depending on how fast your system is), the installation will complete. At this point, unmount the El Capitan ISO by clicking the Devices menu from the VM window, click Optical Drives, then choose Remove disk from virtual drive. The VM is now ready to reboot into OS X from the virtual hard drive. 5. At the welcome screen, choose your country and keyboard layout. You can skip transfer information, location services and logging in with your Apple ID if you wish… 6. Create a User Account and select your Time Zone. You can skip sending diagnostics and usage data to Apple…. 7. Finally, you will arrive at the El Capitan Desktop. 8. Network/internet and audio should work OOB but on my system, the sounds were distorted. Unfortunately, there is no QE/CI and the VM resolution will be fixed without the ability to dynamically resize the VM window (no VirtualBox additions for OS X guests atm). Customization with VBoxManage 1. You can change the default resolution of 1024*768 (after shutting down the VM) with the VBoxManage command from the Windows Administrative Command Prompt: cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\" VBoxManage setextradata "El_Capitan" VBoxInternal2/EfiGopMode N (Where N can be one of 0,1,2,3,4,5) referring to the 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1920x1200 screen resolution respectively. Update: For VirtualBox 5.2.x, the command for changing screen resolution has changed... VBoxManage setextradata "<MyVM>" VBoxInternal2/EfiGraphicsResolution XxY (where X=Horizontal screen resolution, Y=Vertical screen resolution) eg VBoxManage setextradata "<MyVM>" VBoxInternal2/EfiGraphicsResolution 1280x1024 2.   4. Questo è il thread in italiano dedicato alla mia app TINU, l'app open source che ho creato per creare chiavetta di installazione di mac utilizzando il metodo "createinstallmedia". Il nome è l'acronimo di TINU Is Not U (Per le regole del forum devo censurare, ma la U si riferisce ad un programma che piu o meno svolge lo stesso scopo che per buoni motivi è bandita su questo sito, il punto del metterlo nel nome sta nel sottolineare che la mia app è totalmente diversa) L'app è pensata per essere molto semplice ed immediata da usare (con un interfaccia grafica progettata con criteri e metodi usati in ambito professionale per lo sviluppo di applicazioni utente) e per essere molto solida e stabile che funziona sempre al primo colpo (a differenza di altri tool che conosciamo ...) A livello funzionale quest'app non è altro che un interfaccia grafica per il metodo da terminale "createinstallmedia" che viene sfrutatto dalla stessa per creare la chiavetta, quindi le chiavette create con TINU sono chiavette al 100% vanilla come se le aveste create dal terminale, l' applicazione, rispatto al metodo da terminale, aggiunge però funzioni utili come il controllo ed il riconoscimento di errori nel processo, la formattazione automatica della chiavetta USB che si sceglie di usare in formato Mac OS Extended (journaled) (detto anche HFS+) con mapatura di partizione GUID, ed anche altre opzioni personalizzabili o disattivabili come l'applicare un icona alla chiavetta di instalalzione. Tra gli altri vantaggi troviamo il fatto che permette di creare chiavette utilizzando qualunque applicazione di mac che contiene l'eseguibile "createinstallmedia" inclusi installer delle beta ed installer appena rilasciati, e non richiede di fare cose particolari prima come formattare la chiavetta e cambiare lingua al sistema e puo utilizzare applicazioni di mac che si trovano in varie directory nel sistema e non solo quelle che stanno nella cartella delle applicazioni ed hanno un nome specifico (nota che l'applicazione di installazione di mac deve essere quella interacche pesa diversi gb e non quella da pochi mb che l'app store puo scaricare alcune volte e che non contiene tutto quello che serve per permettere a createinstallmedia di funzionare) Tra l;e altre cose quest'app è l'unica app di questo genere sviluppata e che continua ad essere sviluppata in Italia ed è anche l'unica completamente open source.     IOGraphicsFamily kernel panic

    Hey guys, Since either Developer Preview 2 or 3 I have a strange problem - a kernel panic occurs on each shutdown and each restart. In addition to that CMOS gets cleared on each shutdown (not on restart). The whole dump is available below. If anyone has the same problem, please provide info on which version of OS X it first happened, if it still happened in the latest you tried and which boot loader incl. version you use. It happened for me since DP2 or 3 all the way through to DP6, beta inclusive. I used quite a few Clover builds, v2795 and onwards. I didn't try the builds since v2800, but there is no sign that any of these could fix the problem (I will try them later, of course, probably in the evening); not even that Clover is the cause of the problem.   8. Hi. I'm new in the forums, so if this topic already exist, I didn't find it. It may be a dummy question, but I've been searching all around the web for 2 days and I haven't found the right answer. I think for this question I have tu use an example IMPORTANT .. in the next example I DIDN'T USE ANY KIND OF BOOTLOADER 1.- In VMWare the new machine is created as mac, and nothing important to be modified 2.- the installer is created in an already existing (virtual) mac (may be a Niresh one) 3.- In the past .. I used to create an installer (VERY IMPORTANT - to be used in VIRTUAL MACHINES, and AMD CPU), let's say Mavericks installer. I created a new HD (which was used as a USB stick), then I did the restore procedure to get the installer. then the only thing to be replaced was the mach_kernel in root of the installer, so I copied and replaced that kernel for the patched one. then I attached this HD (the installer) to the new Virtual Machine and booted from the HD just created (the installer), and the installer ran without issues. I installed the OS and the last step was boot from the installer again, utilities -> terminal and go to replace the kernel in the root of the new created system. and everything worked nice!!! MY BIG QUESTION: BUT .. in YOSEMITE and EL CAPITAN --- I can't find where is the kernel in the installer just created to be replaced for the patched one!!! please take in account that I'm not using any kind of bootloader!! I created the /System/Library/Kernels directory (in the installer) and dropped the patched kernel there, but didn't work .. it seems like the installer reads the kernel from other source I hope someone can help me. Hello, I have a problem getting the installer to load I have done the install method (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/289062-109-mavericks-simple-vanilla-hackintosh-install-guide/) Short desc: the bootloader is Enoch-chameleon r2748, on GPT/HFS+, for legacy bios The issue is when I boot the install usb drive, it starts in verbose, then a gray screen with the rainbow-mouse shows up, and hangs on there. @native resolution. I used cameleon instead of clover (will try when installed on HD) because it crashes on my Virtualbox VM (osx 10.11), also crash creating uefi partitions. Bios settings seems to be correct..   11. I was running on my laptop, an Asus G1Sn, both win7 and SnowLeopard retail, thanks to chameleon 2.0 RC3 and everything was fine. Few days ago I decided to re-install win but unfortunately, it install the win bootloader too so now i cannot boot OsX and chameleon just disappeared. Honestly i don't remember how i did it the first time, was long time ago, but for sure I installed mac running chameleon from usb and after I put it on my laptop, and before i was running a non-vanilla version of OsX. All I've tried so far was completely useless, is there any way to run from usb or install chameleon using win or a linux live-cd?? Or even better reanimate the previous chameleon? Thanks a lot.

  13. I decided to update my Hackintosh from 10.12 to 10.12.5 today. The update went fine but after rebooting, my hackintosh hdd was not showing up in the BIOS. I could boot into it through my original install USB however. I tried updating clover, replacing it with the one on the USB, and copying it to the Mac HD from the EFi partition to be safe. Nothing seems to be working. Any ideas on how to get my Clover up and running again?

  15. OS X 10.10 Yosemite (DP1) Installation Guide 1. Requirements a. Clover Bootloader - Build 2695. This is necessary for this guide. b. An 8GB or bigger USB drive c. Access to a Mac, preferably your current Hackintosh d. (Optional) A separate partition to install the DP on, as it is not recommended to install this as you daily driver. 2. Obtain a copy of Yosemite 10.10 DP1 - there are multiple files floating around the internet or you can use your developer account on Apple's website. 3. Navigate to where the "Install Yosemite 10.10.app" file is located. Right click on it and select "Show package contents". Go to Contents/SharedSupport and mount "InstallESD.dmg". 3a. Go into Terminal and type the following, and a "BaseSystem" partition should mount on your desktop. 4. Using Disk Utility, restore the "Base System" to your MBR-formatted flashdrive. 5. After the restore is complete, you can unmount the "Base System" from the DMG file and rename your USB to "Installer" or similar. 6. On your newly-imaged installer, navigate to System/Installation and delete the alias to "Packages". Open the previously-mounted "OS X Install ESD" and copy the "Packages" folder to where you deleted the alias (System/Installation). 7. Fire up Terminal, and enter the following: 8. Copy any extensions you need for booting onto the drive. Everyone needs FakeSMC, many need NullCpuPowerManagement. Copy these .kext files from /System/Library/Extensions to System/Library/Extensions on your installer USB. 9. Unmount the installer USB, and install Clover if you do not already use it (Warning: If you are installing this OS over your current Mavericks install in a FULL WIPE, make sure to install Clover onto the USB key so you can use it to boot after the Install) 10. Boot into Clover, and go into "options". Change the boot-args to "-v kext-dev-mode=1" and anything else you need for booting, such as cpus=1 or similar. Exit back to the main menu using the escape key. 11. Select your installer USB and boot it in Clover. 12. Install the OS, but do not reboot after it's done. 13. Open Disk Utility and identify your OS disk identifer: eg disk3s1, disk 1s2, etc. 14. Open Terminal and run the following: and copy your third-party kexts using CP as shown: cp /System/Library/Extensions/XX.kext/ /Volumes/HD/System/Library/Extensions/XX.kext so, if I wanted to copy FakeSMC.kext: cp /System/Library/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext/ /Volumes/HD/System/Library/FakeSMC.kext 15. Close Terminal and reboot into the Yosemite partition, using the same boot-args as before 16. Removed, redundant step. 17. At this point, the system should boot. You may now install anything else you need (kexts, drivers) and begin using the system. 17a. Edit Clover's configuration file to include any boot-args you need. It is located in /EFI/CLOVER/config.plist. Editing info is here. You will, at the minimum, need to add kext-dev-mode=1 18. Note: This is a DEVELOPMENT operating system. Do not expect the same stability as Mavericks or any other stable release. Enjoy! 19. This is my first guide, so if anything is incorrect or redundant feel free to point it out and I will edit it!

    [Help] Darwin on Eee PC 901

    Hi everyone. I can't manage to boot or install a copy of Darwin on my Asus Eee PC 901. I want Darwin, not OS X, because it's more lightweight and I only need it to serve as an AFP file server. I turned to Darwin because I couldn't find a single NAS OS or any *nix distro that supported HFS, which is my disk's file format. This PC doesn't have a working internal hard drive, so I'm gonna need to install it onto a USB drive. I managed to boot PureDarwin (restored in my Mac to an USB drive) using a SD card with GRUB installed (Chameleon didn't even detect the Darwin partition). However, it hangs on "Using 5242 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers". I also tried "darwinx86-801.iso" from Apple, but when I boot that using GRUB, it just shows a blinking underscore for a few seconds, and then restarts. What can I do to use Darwin on this machine?   17. Hi everyone. Thanks to the guides here and here, I was able to install 10.10 (Yosemite) on my laptop Asus K53SD. It wasn't too difficult, but nonetheless there were a few problems along the way that I would like to report, so that others don't have to waste time on them. Mostly it was because I couldn't use neither of the two guides above, but had to do a mix of both. And after installation, there was some DSDT patching to be done. But in the end, the machine is running very well, so I think it is worth to install Yosemite here! Note that I have done another guide for 10.9 here. There are some common procedures, but other steps are so different that I think it is worth doing a new guide. I upgraded from 10.9 to 10.10 and also did a fresh install of 10.10. Both ways work, but I wanted a clean system, so I am running a clean 10.10 installation now. Let's start with the specs of the laptop: Asus K53SD Chipset HM65 CPU i7 2670QM (with 6GB RAM) Integrated Video: Intel HD3000 (with 384MB VRAM) Discrete Video: Nvidia GeForce 610M (with 2GB VRAM) (PCI 1,0,0 VEN 0x10de & DEV 0x1058 & SUBSYS 0x16521043 & REV A1 & CC 030000) The 2 video boards work in Optimus mode, not selectable in BIOS Monitor: 1366x768 Bluetooth: Atheros (VID 0x13d3 & PID 0x3304) WiFi: Atheros AR9002WB-1NG (VID 0x168c & DEV 0x002b & SUBSYS 0x2c371a3b & CC 028000) Ethernet: Atheros AR8151 PCI-E (VID 0x1969 & DEV 0x1083 & SUBSYS 0x18511043 & CC 020000) And: Video camera, audio and mic, USB2 and USB3 ports, VGA and HDMI out. What doesn't work: The Nvidia GeForce 610M, although it can be recognized. The 610 uses Optimus technology, that is not supported on OSX. I was able to detect it on 10.9, with correct memory size and all, but it was never usable, just wasting battery. So in this installation, it stays off and is not recognized. What works but has problems: Bluetooth: it is on and it can pair devices, but I couldn't transfer files to my phone. Audio worked a few times and failed another times. It seems a bit unreliable, probably related to the Fn+F2 cycle keys. Wifi: it works fine when it works, but OSX has difficulties detecting when it is really on. Fn+F2 really change the Wifi on and Off, but OSX is not aware of that. So if Wifi is not working, turn Wifi off on the menu bar, press Fn+F2 once, and turn Wifi on again on the menu bar. Wait a few seconds and check if it is working. Repeat until it is finally recognized. Sound: works with VoodooHDA, but during boot it can cause a bit of feedback. Once you log in, it reads your settings and it is fine. Sometimes the screen is garbled at boot and it gets worse as we work. The only solution is to reboot and hope for a clean screen this time. All the rest works, including sleep and HDMI video. Before we go on a step-by-step installation (see below), here is the list of kext and other software: FakeSMC, inside HWSensors. Elan touchpad kext. Atheros wifi: atheroswlan injector (no original source yet). Sound and mic: Voodoohda. Ethernet driver: Atheros ethernet driver. USB3. Battery kext. Bluetooth. MaciASL to generate a patched DSDT. Clover EFI bootloader. Patched installer for MBR disks. Clover Configurator. DSDT UXCI patch (for USB 3). Now let's get to work. 1. Prepare the internal HD for OSX I used Minitool Partition Wizard to shrink my Windows partition and create space for MacOSX. I also formatted the free space as a primary partition (not logical) with NTFS, so that it shows up in the Installer. If not, I would have to use Disk Utility to format it. An important warning: Disk Utility will mark the formatted partition as active, and will remove the "active" status from the Windows partition. This means that you can't boot Windows without a boot loader, unless you mark the Windows partition as active again. To do this, you have to boot Windows in rescue mode using the installation DVD and on the command line run diskpart. Then do: select disk 0 select part 1 active Since we are on the subject of booting without a boot loader, you might also want to restore the MBR. On the command line, do: bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd Reboot, and you should be fine. (Remember, these instructions are just in case you want to boot directly in to Windows, removing the OS X boot loader.) 2. Prepare the USB for the installer In OSX, using Disk Utility, partition a USB disk (at leats 8GB) with GPT. Follow section 2.0 of the Vanilla Guide here. 3. Copy the installer to the USB Follow section 2.1 of the Vanilla Guide here, black and green text. Do not follow section 2.2. 4. Patch the installer Uncompress the patched installer for MBR disks (download item 11 above) and follow the instructions in section 2.3 of the Vanilla Guide. You are tricking the installer to use MBR disks, instead of GPT. 5. Install Clover bootloader Install the Clover bootloader you downloaded above. Make sure you press "Change Install Location..." and point to the USB stick. Also press "Customize" and select "Bootloader->Install bootaf in MBR". You can leave all the others as default. Install. 6. Configure Clover Run the Clover Configurator and select the EFI/CLOVER/config.plist file on the USB disk. Make the following changes: Acpi: remove Fix Display. Gui: 1366x768 screen resolution. Save. I also prefer to have a text-only boot and verbose output, but that is not necessary. Copy the following kexts to EFI/CLOVER/kexts/10.10: atheros trackpad, wifi injector, fakesmc. 7. Copy files Copy all the files you downloaded previously to a folder in the USB, for example "Essentials". You will need them later. 8. Installation You can now reboot to do the installation. Press the ESC key while rebooting and select the USB stick at the boot screen. Make sure you do not use the USB 3 port, it doesn't work with Clover. The installation should start. If you get a screen saying that a keyboard was not detected, simply press the space key a few times. It should go away and the installation should start. Install away. You might need to use Disk Utilities to format your extra partition to HFS+ before being able to install there. 9. Reboot, fix trackpad When the installation is over, reboot to the USB disk again, but at the Clover screen, choose the new OSX installation on the internal disk, not the USB installation. You should boot into your new installed system. Once the setup is over, it's time to fix that trackpad and the bluetooth keyboard setup. Go to the Bluetooth Preference Pane, press Advanced... and deselect the choices there. You should not be bothered anymore about setting up a keyboard. Go to the Trackpad Preference Pane and move the Scrolling speed marked a bit. Two-finger scrolling should now be enabled. 10. Add a bootloader and kexts to the OSX installation With a working trackpad, let's install the missing kexts. Go to the folder on the USB disk that has all the software and start installing: Clover bootloader: install just like you did before (bootaf in MBR), but this time choose the new OSX installation as a target, not the USB. Clover config: repeat the previous choices (remove Fix Display and 1366x768). You might want to play around a bit more, to have a nice theme or to decide on a more correct machine. Kexts: besides the minimal Kexts we did before, there are a few more you should install:The ones that have an installer will be placed in /System/Library/Extensions. The ones that are simply a kext, you can copy them to /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/10.10, with the other 3 that should be there already. Atheros ethernet driver. USB 3 Bluetooth VoodooHDA (audio) Battery. Reboot. You should not need to use the USB stick to boot. 11. Sound configuration When you reboot, you'll notice that there is a sound loop occurring: the microphone is on. You can notice that if you tap on the bezel around the screen: the sound will be reproduced by the speakers. To fix this, you need to go to VoodooHDA Preference Pane, select "2: Microphone" and put Monitor at 0%. I also have "Input Gain" at 50% and the other four (Speaker, Mic, iMix and Recording Level) at about 90%. These values seem to remove the feedback loop, but I haven't done any serious recording yet, so I'm not sure these are the best setting. Finally, go to the Users Preference Pane, choose your Login Items and add "VoodooHDASettingsLoader" (it is in the Application Folder). This ensures that your settings are loaded each time you login. 12. Fix battery, hdmi, and USB 3 with DSDT patch These should be the last things to fix, and they need a DSDT patch. If you look at the Task Bar, you'll notice that the battery icon is not very accurate. In particular when you disconnect the charger the battery charge drops almost to zero. Another thing that is not working is the HDMI output. Finally, USB 3 isn't working either. You can fix all these issues in one go: Decompress the UXCI patch, called DSDT Editor. You can ignore the editor itself. Simply go to DSDT Editor/Patches/Notebook Core i Sandy Bridge and you'll find there the UHCI.txt patch. You'll need it for the next step. Launch MacIASL. You are looking at the current DSDT table. Don't touch it. Press Patch. Press Open and select the UHCI patch file from point 1.Press Open, Apply and Close. Press Compile. There should be no errors, warnings are fine. USB 3 patch is done, now for the battery and hdmi. Go to Preferences, Sources and add the following URL: http://raw.github.com/RehabMan/Laptop-DSDT-Patch/master Close the pane. Press the Patch button. In the left column, scroll down to "HD3000 Low Resolution" and select it. Press Apply. Go down to "ASUS N55SL" and select it. Press Apply. Press Close. Save the results as ACPI machine language, with the name DSDT.aml (the extension is automatically added), and place it in /EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/patched. Reboot. Battery and hdmi should be fixed now. 13. About sleep Sleep worked out-of-the-box. Fn+F1 puts the machine to sleep, as does closing the lid. However, I had the BIOS patched before, for 10.9, as explained here, on Part 6, point 4. If your machine doesn't sleep, you might have to do that what is explained in point 1 (patching the BIOS). It seems that sleep doesn't work very well with mounted USB drives. Will have to check that. 14. Final thoughts This installation is working very well. There still a few issues with USB 3 and bluetooth. AOnce in a while the machine boots with noise on the screen, that only goes away after a reboot. And if I reboot directly from Windows to OS X without a full shutdown, the fans kick in at max speed and stay like that until a shutdown or I am back in Windows. So to reboot from Windows into OS X, shutdown first. I am willing to live with these shortcomings. I have been working like this for the last 2 weeks and everything is fine.   21. Ciao a tutti, come da firma, sto cercando di far girare Mountain Lion su asus Z8NA-D6. L'obiettivo è avere un'installazione totalmente Vanilla. Il problema sembra essere chameleon e il raid 0 di boot. Vorrei avviare con chameleon un raid 0. Blackcorsair ha fatto scuola, la guida funziona alla grande, ma nonostante le sue ultime indicazioni, gennaio 2011, rimanevano dei problemi ancora a luglio 2011. Essendo il mio raid 0 composto da due dischi, installo chameleon r2069 ("raid-mode") su entrambe le partizioni nascoste che Disk Utility crea al momento della creazione del Raid. Aggiusto il org.chameleon.boot.plist, metto l'uuid del volume raid di root, faccio il touch sulla cache del kernel in S/L/E/, tutto come da: Chameleon Official Docs. Risultato il kernel lo trova, ma chameleon non passa il fakeSMC all'os. Morale non arriva il DSMOS. In realtà chameleon non carica nessun kext da /Extra/Extensions (che si trova nelle partizioni di boot di dischi raid). Le flags di avvio contenute nel org.chameleon.Boot.plist vengono regolarmente avviate (ho fatto molte prove). Infatti il problema è proprio che ignora /Extra/Extensions/. Non ho trovato altre soluzioni oltre a mettere fakeSMC in S/L/E/. per la cronaca, il sistema parte se seguo il consiglio e metto fakeSMC in S/L/E/, ma mi sembra di tornare ai tempi di Tiger ! Vorrei rimediare diversamente. Che voi sappiate è possibile in qualche modo ? Gli utenti che avviano da Raid0 possono confermarmi che a loro Chameleon carica il contenuto di /Extra/Extensions/ ? Benchmarks reveal no loss of performance GPU: Works out of the box. Full resolution + multi monitor support. Ethernet: Fixed with lnx2mac's RTL81xx kext. Audio: Fixed with AppleHDA.kext for ALC892. Apps: App store & messaging works out of the box. Sleep: Works out of the box even with NullCPU and no SleepEnabler. Due to patched BIOS. USB 3.0: Does not work out of the box.

Flash the following InsydeH2O bios to get UEFI boot support (and some other things): http://rajko.info/acer/tools/PEW7130_MoreOptionsMorePages_UefiBoot_HackedBds.zip Get a 8GB USB stick Run gparted on it, initialize a new GPT partition table, make a 200MB Fat32 partition, set it's flags to boot make another partition filling up the rest of the space (can be Fat32 as well, we will format it properly later) Boot up your Mac Os, plug in the USB stick into it Download Clover from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cloverefiboot/files/latest/download Run it's installer, choose the USB stick as destination, go to Advanced Select the UEFI installation mode (copy to ESP etc), select some themes (metal is the default so include that one if you dont want missing graphics) Select all the uefi-64 drivers except for AptioFix Install clover, you should get a successfull screen at the end Mount your Mountain lion 10.8.4 dmg (or if you have the app, thats fine too) Find InstallESD.dmg inside the app (show package contents and such) open up disk utility, go to the USB stick, select the big partition, format it as HFS+ Journaled Drag InstallESD.dmg to the left side of disk utility and click it, then go to the Restore tab drag your big HFS+ USB partition into destination and click Restore You should have ESP partition mounted on your desktop from the Clover install, if not, open up Terminal diskutil list (find which diskXsY is the EFI partition on the usb disk (Y should be 1, X varies per system) ) mkdir /Volumes/ESP sudo mount -t msdos /dev/diskXsY /Volumes/ESP (replacing X and Y with numbers found earlier) Now the ESP partition should be mounted Acquire FakeSMC.kext by slice (for Clover use) from the latest HWSensors package from here: http://www.projectosx.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2585 Acquire AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext and ApplePS2Controller.kext Copy those 3 kext files to your ESP partition under path: EFI/CLOVER/kexts/10.8 and EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other (that's 2 copies made) Open up EFI/CLOVER/config.plist for editing and make sure the nodes are as follows: KernelAndKextPatches KernelCpu = false (our CPU is detected just fine) AsusAICPUPM = true (required if we don't want AppleIntelPowerManagement.kext to KP right at the start) AppleRTC = false KernelLapic = false ACPI C3Latency = 0x00FA PatchAPIC = false (if this is true, then the kernel hardlocks/spins forever when reading APIC states) FixDsdtMask = 0x0010 (only HPET DSDT patching enabled) PCI USBInjection = true USBFixOwnership = false (this only matters if you are using an old BIOS, we are on UEFI) InjectClockID = true HDAInjection = No SystemParameters boot-args = -v (nspci doesnt seem to change anything here) InjectSystemID = false (we are not manually specifying a system id) LegacyBoot = LegacyBiosDefault (the InsydeH2O UEFI knows how to CSM boot) XMPDetection = true (we have XMP RAM modules in the system) CPU BusSpeedkHz = 133000 (you can leave this out if it's autodetected as this value, weird, since the clover wiki says that UEFI detection is inaccurate, but i got the same value under CloverEFI detection as well, so it should be good) QPI = 3200 (cosmetic only, just place the value of GT/s your motherboard has on the QPI bus) Graphics VRAM = 1024 (place the value of how many MB of ram you have, it's always autodetected wrong, but seems to be only cosmetic) For a full description of all CLOVER config.plist entries, see http://clover-wiki.zetam.org/Configuration Stick the USB drive into the target system, power it up, mash F12, select the ACPI...USB... device to boot from (not the legacy name of your USB device, the REALLY long one) You should be greeted with Clover boot menu, you can hit O and check that all the settings you wanted loaded properly Then go find the USB/Mountain Lion volume (HFS+ Install Mac Os X ESD should be the name), and press SPACE on it to see boot options Select 'Without caches and with injected kexts' and hit enter. After some text scrolling by, you should be greeted with "Maintenance Mode Options" Open up Disk Utility and format (or create, or don't touch if you already have one), your target Mountain Lion HFS+ partition (it's only important that you have one, to select later). It needs to be on a GPT partitioned hard drive, of course. Then proceed with the installation, choosing the partition when asked After the reboot, make sure to mash F12 and select the usb device again ! Now, select the partition you chose to install ML on (you remember what you named it, right), and do the 'Without caches, with injected kexts' dance again. It should boot up normally, and proceed with the installation (this stage2 takes longer, as it's actually installing stuff vs just copying it off your flash drive) At the end, there should be a big green check mark to indicate your success ! Booting the target partition this way (without caches, with injected kexts) once more will greet you into Mac Os Setup wizard. Continue through it. However, you are not done yet. The system doesn't work without this kext injection stuff (which i like to avoid), and drivers for many system components are still missing. Mount the ESP partition again (under your new OS), recall the guide from above on how to do it. I made these patches, and this way you use the latest ML driver you already have. Save the file and reboot, once again booting with caches disabled, and injection enabled. Now you should have working ethernet and wireless support ! Time to get online. Acquire and install Kext Wizard. now you can install the 3 kexts you have under ESP/EFI/CLOVER/kexts/10.8 (should be the 2 PS2 ones, and the FakeSMC) using the Installation tab then go into the maintenance tab, check rebuild cache, and execute. Now you can reboot into NORMAL mode, that is, using caches, and NOT using injected kexts. This mode is much faster to boot in. Getting the rest of the system components working: Audio: Get VoodooHDA from http://sourceforge.net/projects/voodoohda/files/latest/download Acquire AppleHDADisabler.kext Install both kexts with Kext Wizard and rebuild caches Then, mount the ESP partition, open EFI/CLOVER/config.plist, and add 0x8000 (audio fix) to your FixDsdtMask (so it ends up being 0x8010, if it was 0x0010 before). Save config.plist and reboot. You should now have proper audio with all jacks and internal speakers and microphone working. Bluetooth: Get the latest ath3k firmware injector from https://code.google.com/p/os-x-atheros-3k-firmware/downloads/list Install the IOath3kfrmwr.kext from the Release folder with Kext Wizard, rebuild caches and reboot. Make sure to hit FN+F3 once to enable bluetooth if it's not showing up (the light doesnt work, don't worry, but FN+F3 does the function it should) Backlight: It should work using FN + LR arrows, but it behaves like no OS is installed (there's no slider under System Preferences->Display, for example), if anyone knows how to fix this please tell me, it's annoying of it booting up to full 100% backlight (adding the "backlight" common DSDT patch doesnt seem to work) Battery: ?????????????????????? Someone please tell me what is the cleanest and most native way of getting battery stuff working... (Don't want to resort to VoodooBattery) Also, this entire time, you've been UEFI booting clover off the USB stick, which required you to hit F12 every boot and such... To fix that, just copy all the files off the USB's ESP to any of your hard drives' ESP partitions, and just select that to boot from.
