This is the procedure I followed for installing Leopard 10.5.2 using the iATKOS v2.0i Leopard 10.5.2 Install DVD on Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus with GeForce 8600GT 256MB graphics card and Netgear GA311 Gigabit LAN PCI card (RealTek 8169S chipset) and Asus SupremeFX audio card: NO WARRANTY IS IMPLIED OR GIVEN AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THESE STEPS WILL WORK FOR YOU AS THEY HAVE FOR ME. UPDATE 1 July 2008 The earlier update described how I had resolved the Sleep function problem displayed by iATKOS 2.0i (discovered after this blog entry was initially made) but in a way that resulted in a USB device icon desktop non-display problem.....PROBLEM NOW SOLVED! ....solution steps are given in blue text within main text below.... Also, I have found that using Kernel 9.2.0 ToH instead of Kernel 9.2.0 nForce Core EFI also results in a fully working system so far as I can discern to date....but Kernel 9.2.0 nForce Core EFI was chosen by me because my PC has an Intel Core2 Q6600 CPU. 1. Installing 10.5.2 I used the iATKOS v2.0i.iso file (burned to DVD) with MD5 checksum: MD5 iAtkos 2.0i = f1ad86417c16c1ea873abb8114989d3e 1. Boot from iATKOS 2.01 DVD - Press F8 at Darwin Bootloader and at boot: prompt type "nforce_core -v" without quotes. 2. Partition HDD as MBR and format install volume as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and give a unique name without spaces using Disk Utility with iATKOS 2.01 DVD Installer running. 3. DVD Installer Selections: iATKOS v2.0i Main System Y Darwin Bootloader Y Stock Files N Additional Patches - Darwin x86 for MBR (Non-EFI) N Kernel 9.2.0 ToH N nForce kernels - Kernel 9.2.0 nForce Core EFI Y (Install also works with Kernel 9.2.0 ToH but not chosen because my CPU is Intel Core2 Q6600) Kernel 9.2.0 nForce Core Non-EFI N Kernel 9.2.0 nForce Core SSE3 Non-EFI N SMBIOS drivers Apple SMBIOS netkas Y Apple SMBIOS-27 4rd release iMac N Apple SMBIOS-27 4rd release MacBook N Remove Thermal kexts Y Disk Image Mounter patch N Drivers - VGA - N System - Intel SATA N nForce SATA Y Intel Speedstep N ext2fs N NTFS-3G N Network N On the required restart by the installer DVD, booting up with -v -f (generally recommended after installation) fails with a kernel panic: Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies): com.apple.GeForce(5.2.4)@0x7fab3000->0x7fb39fff dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(5.2.4)@0x7f873000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(1.5)@0x7f865000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.4.1)@0x77a36000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(1.5.1)@0x7f849000 com.apple.NVDAResman(5.2.4)@0x7f873000->0x7fab2fff dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(1.5)@0x7f865000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.4.1)@0x77a36000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(1.5.1)@0x7f849000 BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task Mac OS version: 9C7010 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 9.2.0: Tue Feb 5 16:13:22 PST 2008; root:xnu-1228.3.13~1/RELEASE_I386 This kernel panic points to a GeForce Driver(s) error.... at least for my GeForce 8600GT 256MB graphics card..... even though I had picked no nVidia drivers! Thus the base OS X system drivers could not drive my GeForce 8600GT.... If you have a similar kernel panic do not expect to see the same hexadecimal numbers as in the example above..... For a solution, see for example : http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues#toc1 QUOTE com.apple.GeForce; com.apple.NVDAResman Kernel Panic Issue Issue: System stops on Kernel Panic during boot. Solution:This is caused by the GeForce Kexts that are installed by default. The issue is resolved by removing the GeForce kexts at boot, and it can be done as follows: boot with -s mount -uw / rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/Ge*.kext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NV*kext exit ENDQUOTE 2. Installing nVidia Graphics Drivers and solving Sleep Function problem So, after rebooting by typing -s at the boot: prompt and waiting for the prompt :/ root# to appear (I had to boot –s twice and press Enter after the static cursor appeared to get the prompt; you may not need to), type each of the following lines, followed by Enter and then waiting for :/ root# to re-appear: mount -uw / rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/Ge*.kext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NV*.kext followed finally by exit. "logout" will then appear on screen followed by "Jettisoning kernel linker" and the rest of the verbose booting screen, resulting in successful booting into the OS X Welcome screen and music..... The System Profiler shows under Graphics/Displays, 1024x768 resolution 32-bit Color depth and 32MB VRAM with Software Driven CI and QE Not Supported, and against Kernel Extension Info: No kext loaded I used Mysticus C*'s 10.5.2 Graphics Update Installer and ran the "10.5.2 Full Gfx Update v1.1.mpkg" file with ONLY the following options selected: 1.0Gfx Update + Latest Macbook (selected by default) Y Main Kernel & System Drivers – (First folder) Netkas - 9.2.0 sleep kernel Y Main Kernel & System Drivers – (Second folder) VGA – Nvidia – NVinject256MB Y (All other RAM options N) N.B. The proper solution was found by doing a clean iATKOS v2.0i install (simply to regenerate (i) the original Sleep function problem and (ii) the ability to mount/dismount USB devices on the desktop), and then running the "10.5.2 Full Gfx Update v1.1.mpkg" file but with the Netkas - 9.2.0 sleep kernel also being chosen at this stage.... whereas the first partial solution involved (after having already run the "10.5.2 Full Gfx Update v1.1.mpkg" file once to install NVinject, then the Taruga_AD1988b_rev3_Installer package, and finally rebooting and repairing permissions) running the "10.5.2 Full Gfx Update v1.1.mpkg" file a second time with only the Netkas - 9.2.0 sleep kernel being selected - this procedure solved the Sleep function problem but produced the USB device mounting problem..... And rebooted with –v –f successfully…. In the System Profiler I had Chipset Model: Graphics by NVIDIA, VRAM (Total): 256 MB ROM Revision: NVinject 0.2.1 plus 1152x870@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported….. I then chose 1280x1024@75Hz resolution in Display Preferences and got as usual a blank blue screen, so I rebooted with –v successfully without any hang-ups….. In the System Profiler I now had 1280x1024@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth and 256MB VRAM with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported….. At this point iATKOS v2.0i (10.5.2) was running fine with Internet access, simple audio playback on iTunes Radio, USB device mounting/un-mounting, network file sharing…..In order to get full audio functions, I ran the Taruga_AD1988b_rev3_Installer package….check out http://wiki.taruga.net/tiki-index.php..... UPDATE - Taruga HDA website is currently off-line; go http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...st&id=30545 for the Taruga_AD1988b_rev3_Installer package I then rebooted with –v successfully….full Intel HDA function is restored, both Sleep function AND USB device mounting/unmounting working, as is network sharing ….. I finally Repaired Permissions without any permissions errors remaining….. a fully working OS X 10.5.2 system……
  2. Thanks for the info, I tried the "easy" solution, get past the "still waiting for root device", but not the error is "unknown SIGSEGV code 0". I am not selecting a specific kernel, booting -v. Any ideas?Thanks

Part I - Clean install of Leopard 10.5.2 via Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD Part II - Clean install of Leopard 10.5.2 via iATKOS v2.0i DVD Part III - Clone install of either a Kalyway or iATKOS v2.0i Leopard 10.5.2 OS installed on an internal HDD All done on an Internal Hard Drive, or on an External USB 2.0 / eSATA Hard Drive connected via either USB 2.0 or eSATA......using a USB keyboard and mouse (NOT PS/2), Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus motherboard, Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 G0 CPU, PATA DVDRW, Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256MBgraphics card, Netgear GA311 Gigabit LAN PCI card (RealTek 8169S chipset) and Asus SupremeFX audio card. NO WARRANTY IS IMPLIED OR GIVEN AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THESE STEPS WILL WORK FOR YOU AS THEY HAVE FOR ME. THIS GUIDE IS ONLY for INTEL CPUs NOT AMD CPU SYSTEMS AND THE KERNEL AND THE SYSTEM INSTALL SELECTIONS USED IN THE GUIDE ARE FOR AN nFORCE CHIPSET MOBO. CERTAIN SELECTIONS WILL NEED TO BE DIFFERENT FOR AN INTEL CHIPSET MOBO. Part I - Clean install of Leopard 10.5.2 via Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD I used the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD Intel_Amd.iso file (burned to DVD) with MD5 checksum: MD5 Kalyway 10.5.2 = E03AF401CC9E0BAAB1401199170DDF99 1. Boot from the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD Intel_Amd Install DVD by pressing F8 at boot-up to bring up the PC BIOS "Boot Menu", then selecting the DVDRW Drive and pressing Enter. 2. On DVD Darwin boot loader appearance, press F8 quickly and at the "boot:" prompt, type "cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v" (without quotes) 3. Once the Kalyway OS X Installer has loaded, use Disk Utility to partition the HDD as Master Boot Record (MBR) into the number and size of volumes required, and format the intended OS X install volume as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) giving it a unique name without spaces. 4. If you have partitioned your internal or external HDD into more than one volume, select the first volume to install to, otherwise just select the internal or external HDD volume. 5. Press Continue and then Customize. Once in the "Customize" menu, select as follows: Additional Fonts Y (Choose to suit your requirements) (Chosen because I may need them in future) Language Translations N (Choose to suit your requirements) Kernels - kernel_9.2_sleep Y (Default choice) kernel_9.2_speedstep N kernel_922_kabyl N kernel_922_modin N kernel_92_nforce N kernel_vanilla_92 N Graphics _Drivers - Ati_Radeon N Nvidia_Geforce - NVinject-256 Y (all other NVinject choices N and NATIT_gfnvidia N ) Intel_GMA N Choose ONE graphics driver to suit your requirements but if you have any video display/graphics driver problems when running the OS X installer and on booting etc., then run the OS X Install DVD again with NO graphics driver chosen initially. See Part II in this blog entry for the steps to take, such as deleting the current nVidia graphics driver and post-installing an nVidia graphics driver using Mysticus C*'s 10.5.2 Graphics Update Installer if you experience problems�.(it should be similar if you use an ATI graphics card but I guess you would be looking for AT*, ATI and Radeon [or related similar name kexts] rather than NV* kexts etc. BUT do your own search via Google in InsanelyMac fora and elsewhere to confirm what is required in terms of deleting current ATI graphics driver kexts and post-installing ATI graphics driver kexts if you are running with an ATI graphics card).... Audio_Drivers N Choose ONE audio driver to suit your requirements but if you have any audio driver problems when running the OS X installer and on booting etc., then run the OS X Install DVD again with NO audio driver chosen initially.....See Part II in this blog entry for the steps to take, such as post-installing the required audio driver kext using, for example, Kext Helper b7......or OSx86Tools...... Networks_ Drivers - Default choices (But my onboard LAN does not work with OS X x86; I have a Netgear GA311 PCI card [RealTek 8169S chipset] fitted for Gigabit LAN) If you have network problems, it could be that your on-board LAN will not work properly under OS X.....the onboard LAN on a MOBO may or may not work - it all depends on the MOBO specs. See http://sourceforge.net/projects/realtekr1000/ for the R1000, which is an opensource driver for network controllers RTL8168, RTL8111, RTL8169, RTL8101 and some others modification for Mac OSX. It is based on Realtek's driver for Linux but is not supported by Realtek. Also see http://www.psystar.com/realtek_r1000_driver.html Psystar have released a modded driver based on R1000 claimed by them to enhance the interrupt handling and link detection for these NICS: RTL8168, RTL8111, RTL8169, RTL8101. If this is the case, get hold of a Realtek chipset based PCI Netwok Card i.e. RTL8168, RTL8111, RTL8169, RTL8101 chipset card....check card specs before buying....depending on the card used it may just work out of the box with the already installed drivers in OS X... As regards installing a network driver kext (if required post-OS X install), you can use, for example, Kext Helper b7......or OSx86Tools...... Mobo_Chipsets - Default choices Thirds_Applications � Choose to suit your requirements (I chose archives, candybar, changeFinder, colloquy, Growl, kextHelperB7, onyx, pacifist, perian, ppfomatic, stuffitExpander, textmate, vlc, xbench) SSE2_Jas1048_ACPI_APIC N (Default choice) Patches - Hardcoded_SMBIOS Default choice i.e. Lastnetkassmbios boot_with-cpus=1_flag N PCGenUSB_Fix N Francais_pc_keyboard_layout N TimeMachineFix Y PowerManagement_bundle N Intel Memory Controller N AMD_1052_Patches Default N (Default choice) 6. Double check your "Customize" choices, then click "Install". When install begins you may choose to (or not) skip the DVD verify process. 7. When all processes are killed and DVD drive activity stops and the re-boot "beep" sounds, remove the DVD and boot from the Internal HDD or from the External USB 2.0 / eSATA HDD by pressing F8 at boot-up to bring up the PC BIOS "Boot Menu", then selecting the Internal HDD or External HDD (which will be shown as either a SATA drive or USB drive depending on how it has been connected to the PC) and pressing Enter. 8. On the External USB 2.0 / eSATA HDD Darwin boot loader appearance, press F8 quickly and at the "boot:" prompt, type "-v -f" (without quotes) and wait as verbose booting takes place successfully...... but obviously the waiting time is much longer when the External HDD is connected via USB 2.0 than it is when connected via eSATA...... so I choose eSATA for myself.... Having rebooted with -v -f successfully�. In the System Profiler I had Chipset Model: Graphics by NVIDIA, VRAM (Total): 256 MB ROM Revision: NVinject 0.2.1 plus 1152x870@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported�.. 9. I then chose 1280x1024@75Hz resolution in Display Preferences and got as usual a blank blue screen ("on-the-fly" resolution switching may not be feasible on LCD or CRT monitors with open source graphics drivers, such as NVinject, NVkush, NATIT and so on?....I have yet to try with a CRT monitor.....if it is, I am not yet aware of how to set it up. See UPDATE below:), so I rebooted with -v -f successfully without any hang-ups�.. In the System Profiler I now had 1280x1024@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth and 256MB VRAM with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported�.. UPDATE: To get switchable resolutions on-the-fly, try swapping the monitor DVI or VGA (via VGA-to-DVI adapter) connector to the other DVI port on the GFX card.....this tip, from cyclonefr, has worked for me. 10. At this point Kalyway (10.5.2) was running fine with Internet access, simple audio playback on iTunes Radio, USB device mounting/un-mounting, network file sharing�..In order to get full audio functions, I ran the Taruga_AD1988b_rev3_Installer package downloaded from http://wiki.taruga.net/tiki-index.php..... or from http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...st&id=30545 11. Finally, to avoid any problems with the well known >3 GB RAM problem... ; see this thread by mtotho.....on many motherboards, if you install 4GB or more of RAM in Dual Channel mode, then you may get a kernel panic when the RAM usage exceeds 3GB (I have experienced this issue with 4, 5 and 6GB RAM installed, although in some fora it is suggested that with 6GB or 8GB RAM the issue may disappear.... ) For further information on whether or not this RAM limitation issue may apply to your system, see the TROUBLESHOOTING SECTION at the end of the guide.... So, I modified the com.apple.Boot.plist file as follows: 1. Go to the Terminal, and at the $ prompt, type in sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist 2. Enter your password when requested. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor within the Terminal window. 3. Type in (without any spaces anywhere) maxmem=3072 between <string> and </string> under <key>Kernel Flags</key>. 4. Move the cursor the Terminal window down until it no longer moves, then press ^O and then Enter, to save the modified com.apple.Boot.plist file. 5. Press ^X to Exit and type "exit" at the $ prompt to log out of the Terminal and then close and quit Terminal. 12. I rebooted with -v and Repaired Permissions, and enjoyed my success in achieving what I set out to do.... IF NOT SEE TROUBLESHOOTING SECTION AT END OF GUIDE...... Part II - Clean install of Leopard 10.5.2 via iATKOS v2.0i DVD I used the iATKOS v2.0i.iso file (burned to DVD) with MD5 checksum: MD5 iAtkos 2.0i = f1ad86417c16c1ea873abb8114989d3e Stage A. When the Darwin Bootloader appears, press F8 quickly and at the "boot:" prompt, type (without quotes) "nforce_core -v", or one of the other possible options (i.e. "nforce -v" for nForce MOBOs with Intel SSE3 CPU; "toh -v" to boot with the ToH 9.2.0 kernel) depending on your motherboard and Intel CPU type, or simply "cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v" if you are not sure.... 3. Partition HDD as MBR and format the intended OS X install volume as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and give a unique name without spaces using Disk Utility within the iATKOS 2.01 DVD Installer. 4. In the System Profiler I had Chipset Model: Graphics by NVIDIA, VRAM (Total): 256 MB ROM Revision: NVinject 0.2.1 plus 1152x870@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported�.. I then chose 1280x1024@75Hz resolution in Display Preferences and got as usual a blank blue screen, so I rebooted with -v successfully without any hang-ups�.. In the System Profiler I now had 1280x1024@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth and 256MB VRAM with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported�.. UPDATE: To get switchable resolutions on-the-fly, try swapping the monitor DVI or VGA (via VGA-to-DVI adapter) connector to the other DVI port on the GFX card.....this tip, from cyclonefr, has worked for me. 3. At this point iATKOS v2.0i (10.5.2) was running fine with Internet access, simple audio playback on iTunes Radio, USB device mounting/un-mounting, network file sharing�..In order to get full audio functions, I ran the Taruga_AD1988b_rev3_Installer package�.check out http://wiki.taruga.net/tiki-index.php..... or from http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...st&id=30545 4. I rebooted with -v with full Intel HDA function restored, both Sleep function and USB device mounting/unmounting working, as well as network sharing �.. I finally Repaired Permissions without any permissions errors remaining�.. a fully working OS X 10.5.2 system�� 5. I then modified the com.apple.Boot.plist file (see Part I for reason why....) as follows: 1. Go to the Terminal, and at the $ prompt, type in sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist 2. Enter your password when requested. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor within the Terminal window. 3. Type in (without any spaces anywhere) maxmem=3072 between <string> and </string> under <key>Kernel Flags</key>. 4. Move the cursor the Terminal window down until it no longer moves, then press Ctrl-O (i.e. ^O) and then Enter, to save the modified com.apple.Boot.plist file. 5. Press Ctrl-X (i.e. ^X) to Exit and type "exit" at the $ prompt to log out of the Terminal and then close and quit Terminal. I then rebooted with -v and Repaired Permissions, and enjoyed my success in achieving what I set out to do.... IF NOT SEE TROUBLESHOOTING SECTION AT END OF GUIDE...... Part III - Clone install of either a Kalyway or iATKOS v2.0i Leopard 10.5.2 OS installed on an internal HDD 1. Boot into OS X on the internal HDD, and on Darwin boot loader appearance, press any key quickly and at the "boot:" prompt, type "cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v" (without quotes). 2. When OS X is up and running, if you do not already have Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1.1 installed, then download it from http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html and install it in Applications....Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1.1 will attempt a block-level clone if the target volume is at least as large as the source volume but if not a file-level copy will occur..... 3. Run Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1.1 with "Backup everything" selected under Cloning options: and check the "Erase the target volume" box, then having selected the Source Disk (this can be either a Kalyway Leopard 10.5.2 install or an iATKOS v2.0i Leopard 10.5.2 install) and the Target Disk, press "Clone"....When the cloning operation has completed, click Ok and close Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1.1. 4. Place the iATKOS v2.0i in the DVDRW drive and boot it by pressing F8 at boot-up to bring up the "Boot Menu", then selecting the DVDRW Drive and pressing Enter. If you do not possess the iATKOS v2.0i DVD, you can use the iATKOS v1.0ir3 regular version with MD5 MD5 iAtkos 1.0i R3 regular= 3F3D063873469A5357F392D027843C10 or, the iATKOS v1.0i r2 - EqUaTe1 patched DVD downloaded from Internet space..... When using iATKOS v1.0i R3 regular or iATKOS v1.0i r2 - EqUaTe1, in Step 7. below, you should select ONLY the Darwin EFI bootloader - NOTHING ELSE! 5. When the Darwin Bootloader appears, press F8 quickly and at the "boot:" prompt, type (without quotes) "cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v" and press Enter. 6. When the iATKOS 2.01 DVD Installer is running, "Click the button to continue...", then click on "Continue" in the Welcome window, followed by "Agree" in the next opo-up window, and in the Select a Destination window, select the volume you have just cloned OS X onto and press "Continue". 7. In the Install Summary window, press "Customize" and in the Package Name pop-up window, select ONLY Darwin Bootloader - NOTHING ELSE! and press "Done" to return to the Install Summary window, press "Install". 8. Ignore the "Install Failed" message window that will appear after the install has completed, and just click "Restart". 9. When all processes are killed and DVD drive activity stops and the re-boot "beep" sounds, remove the DVD and boot from the Internal HDD or from the External USB 2.0 / eSATA HDD by pressing F8 at boot-up to bring up the "Boot Menu", then selecting the Internal HDD or External HDD (which will be shown as either a SATA drive or USB drive depending on how it has been connected to the PC) and pressing Enter. 10. When the Darwin Bootloader appears, press any key quickly and at the "boot:" prompt, type (without quotes) "-v" and press Enter. 11. When the cloned OS X system is booted up and running, then Eject the iATKOS Install DVD, open Disk utility and Repair Permissions, and enjoy another success.... SOME TROUBLESHOOTING..... 1. If you are running with a SATA HDD and/or a SATA DVDRW you could experience some problems...... 1.1 You may be able to boot the OS X Installer DVD.....maybe even use Disk Utility......but some time later during the install process, the system freezes with you being able to move the mouse about but not select any actions etc..... On the frozen verbose (when the -v boot flag is chosen) boot process screen (white text on black background), you may see as the last error messages before the white block cursor "Still waiting for root device" "IOATAController blocking bus." This problem is not limited to nForce chipset MOBOs, as this forum post on installing OS X using iATKOS v1.0i shows: Note the MOBO is different with Intel chipsets.....I am not 100% certain of the cause and solution to the problem yet......I would be happy to be enlightened on this......for the benefit of myself and others..... As Mysticus C* has noted in his excellent nForce chipset + Intel CPU install guide: so, this "work around" solution to this "falling asleep" of the DVDRW could have a beneficial effect here too.....I do not know.....but you lose nothing by trying it if you are getting these error messages.... 1.2 If, during the boot process, the system freezes, and on the frozen verbose (when the -v boot flag is chosen) boot process screen (white text on black background), you see as the error messages before the white block cursor "SAM MEDIA READ / WRITE failed" "Still waiting for root device" then there is an incompatibility between your SATA DVDRW and the nForceATA driver on the install DVD.....such as a missing DEVICE ID...... Or, if only the following error message appears "Still waiting for root device" then it means your SATA HDD is not being recognised due to a missing DEVICE ID.....and/or to a similar unknown incompatibility as with the SATA DVDRW....... These two potential problems are highlighted in the same Mysticus C* guide: Solution: I recommend you search, read and ask questions in the relevant InsanelyMac fora and threads (and elsewhere in other OS X x86 fora via google....).....I do hope you find the answers to these SATA related problems for your particular PC system...... 2. If you even have difficulty booting from the OS X Installer DVD, then you may have (i) A corrupted OS X Installer DVD..... Solution: Check that the iso.image MD5 checksum is CORRECT and burn the .iso image SLOWLY (≤ x4) (ii) Incorrect BIOS settings for installing and running OS X...... Configure SATA as "AHCI" or Serial-ATA Configuration [Enabled] JMicron SATA / PATA Controller [Disabled].....if JMicron present.....unless it works for you [Enabled].....but JMicron is known to cause problems for some....but JMicron patches for OS X Install DVDs are now appearing...... JMicron Controller Mode [AHCI]....if present..... As regards JMicron Controllers, as pointed out by Mysticus C* in his thread here, the RAM limitation of 2GB in Dual Channel Mode (or if you have > 2GB RAM in Dual Channel Mode, setting "maxmem = 3072...[or higher if you can do so and retain stable running of OS X....]" or "maxmem=2048" applies to nForce chipsets and for the JMicron Controller Mode [iDE/SATA]......not when using JMicron Controller Mode [AHCI] with original drivers so 4GB RAM should not be a problem...... Furthermore, mtotho, who states in his thread also has this entry So the generally agreed RAM limitation issue fix for non-nForce chipset MOBOs is to set "AHCI" mode....but if your BIOS does not offer this, then you should try the "maxmem fix"..... NO WARRANTY IS IMPLIED OR GIVEN AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THESE STEPS WILL WORK FOR YOU AS THEY HAVE FOR ME. THIS GUIDE IS ONLY for INTEL CPUs NOT AMD CPU SYSTEMS AND THE SYSTEM INSTALL SELECTIONS USED IN THE GUIDE ARE FOR AN nFORCE CHIPSET MOBO. I have used the iATKOS S3 Version 2 Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Install DVD NOTE: md5 of iATKOS_S3_version2.iso is 55d3aaae14435065b53acb61e3bccae2 According to the very useful iATKOS S3 Readme, with this iATKOS S3 release (designed for Non-Apple x86 Intel CPU computers), you can choose MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (Guid Partition Table) via partitioning options, and says that it boots into 64bit mode by default, but that if you select the 32bit package or any of the 32bit-only driver(s) then the system will boot the kernel in 32bit by default. However, it is not clear if this is referring only to the OS X system it installs, since the Install DVD itself boots into 32bit mode according to the com.apple.Boot.plist in /Extra on the DVD: NOTE that like ALL single-layer DVD distros, this Install DVD is a "stripped-down" version of the Retail OS X Install DVD containing NO Printer Drivers........ INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Boot from the iATKOS S3 Version 2 Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Install DVD 2. So, if you have > 3GB RAM and/or experience any kernel panics in use, then you should replace it with slashack's version, or with AnV's version 1.0.4 variant......to be found in my Snow_Leopard_Support_Files_V2.3...... D. The Sleepenabler.kext does not enable sleep on nForce MOBOs AFAIK and also prevents updating to 10.6.4. E. The Install DVD runs NVEnabler on bootup...... 7. Download and run the Mac OS X Update 10.6.4 Combo Package Installer.......after successful installation.......click on the Restart button.......as is usual the PC will reboot twice...... 8. Once everything on OSX_Main is running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 just as you want it to, you can then use Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner v3.3.2 to clone it to the OSX_Backup volume...... 9. Despite a successful installation and updating to OS X 10.6.4, MY RECOMMENDATION is to do a full vanilla Snow Leopard Retail OS X Install DVD installation, with the necessary non-vanilla kexts placed, if at all possible, only in /Extra/Extensions/, using my nForce GUIDE toINSTALL Snow Leopard (10.6) on a Series 6 or 7 nForce chipset / IntelCore2 Duo or Quad or newer CPU MOBO, which explains how to do a successful installation of Snow Leopard 10.6 using either a USB flash drive installer method, or my nForceSLBoot132DVD method........

I have easily been able to make my x86 "About This Mac" window both accurate in real-time i.e. when I change overclock, speeds the CPU speed in the window changes automatically, and also ONLY IN LEOPARD 'cool looking' as a black 'transparent' window. NO WARRANTY IS IMPLIED OR GIVEN AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THESE STEPS WILL WORK FOR YOU AS THEY HAVE FOR ME. This is how: Step 1. To make the "About This Mac" window black but 'transparent', firstly download the files from http://aquamac.proboards106.com/index.cgi?...&thread=489 At http://homepage.mac.com/steve.smedley/.Pub...0This%20Mac.zip Unzip the downloaded file. Follow instructions (my additional instructions are in italics) included in the downloaded ZIP file to achieve the black 'transparent' window effect: Instructions for setting "About This Mac" backgrounds. 1. Navigate to System/LibraryCoreServices/Loginwindow. 2. Right click Loginwindow and click Show package contents. 3. Click Contents/Resorces, then drag "MacOSX.tiff" (Grey/Black Apple MacOSX.tif) onto the desktop to keep as a backup copy, and then right click on the original file within the Resources folder and send to trash. You will have to enter your password to do this. 4. Drag the replacement "MacOSX.tiff" image (from Std MacOS X tiff white Writing) back into the folder you deleted the original from. You will have to enter your password again. This will ensure that the 'Mac OS X' logo is in white rather than black and so visible in the transparent black "About This Mac" window. 5. Also within Resources (within the English.lproj [or your language.lproj] folder within the Resources folder), you will see "About this Mac.nib". Back up your existing file by dragging it onto the desktop to keep as a backup copy and replace with the new one in this folder. This will give the "About this Mac" window the transparent look that matches "Quick Look" in Leopard. This will only work in Leopard. 6. Repair Permissions with Disk Utility. 7. You must logout & then Log Back in. 8. Open "About This Mac" and view your new image. Notes:- A copy of the original items are included in the file if you want to go back to the original at any time. If the HDD has been partitioned into more than one volume, select the volume to install to. My external 750GB HDD is partitioned as MBR into 6 OS X volumes formatted as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled); the first volume has the Darwin PC_EFI v8 bootloader installed using OSx86Tools and is a 10GB OS X Boot volume with Kalyway 10.5.2 installed and "-v cpus=1 maxmem=2048" set in com.apple.Boot.plist. 5. Press Continue and then Customize. UPDATE: To get switchable resolutions on-the-fly, try swapping the monitor DVI or VGA (via VGA-to-DVI adapter) connector to the other DVI port on the GFX card.....this tip, from cyclonefr, has worked for me. 10. At this point iDeneb v1.1 10.5.4 runs without any apparent problems, including USB devices and Firewire devices mounting/unmounting.....etc., EXCEPT for no audio.....In order to get full audio functions, I ran the Taruga_AD1988b_rev3_Installer package downloadable from http://wiki.taruga.net/tiki-index.php.....when online.... or from http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...st&id=30545..... 11. BUT when the "Before You Begin...." screen appears and the USB keyboard is identified, followed by the "Welcome" screen and the country choice is made, followed by "Select Your Keyboard" screen and the keyboard layout is chosen, all without any problems, followed by the "Do You Already Own a Mac?" screen, THEN making ANY selection, e.g. "Do not transfer my information now", and clicking the "Continue" button causes the system to hang (even though the mouse pointer can be moved) for a while BEFORE the Welcome screen video sequence loops again back to the "Before You Begin...." screen..... 10. Solution: AFIK this solution is thanks to greyMD - 1. Run single user mode using the -s flag while booting i.e. type -s at the "boot:" prompt and wait for the prompt ":/ root#" to appear (I had to boot -s twice and press Enter after the static cursor appeared to get the prompt; you may not need to), type each of the following lines, followed by Enter and then waiting for ":/ root#" to re-appear. 2. Mount the file system by typing "mount -uw /" (without quotes) at the ":/ root#" prompt. 3. Change the root password by typing "passwd root" at the ":/ root#" prompt and then typing in a new root password and retyping it again as requested. 4. Create the .AppleSetupDone file by typing "touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone" (without quotes) at the ":/ root#" prompt 5. Boot the system by typing "exit" (without quotes) at the ":/ root#" prompt. 11. Reboot from HDD with "-v -f" and the OS X Login screen is presented; enter "root" as Name and for Password, the root password chosen previously, and the system logs you in as System Administrator. Having rebooted with -v -f successfully…. the System Profiler shows..... Chipset Model: Graphics by NVIDIA, VRAM (Total): 256 MB ROM Revision: NVinject 0.2.1 plus 1152x870@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported..... 12. On setting 1280x1024@75Hz resolution in Display Preferences I get as usual a blank blue screen ("on-the-fly" resolution switching may not be feasible on LCD or CRT monitors with open source graphics drivers, such as NVinject, NVkush, NATIT and so on?....I have yet to try with a CRT monitor.....if it is, I am not yet aware of how to set it up. See UPDATE below:), so I rebooted with "-v" successfully (N.B. booting now with "-v -f" causes a system reboot!) without any hang-ups. The System Profiler shows 1280x1024@75Hz resolution 32-bit Color depth and 256MB VRAM with Hardware Accelerated CI and QE Supported….. Insert the JaS OsX86 10.5.4 Client/Server Intel SSE2 SSE3 Install DVD in the DVDRW again and ru n Pacifist (located in iDeneb App folder in Applications), then click on "Open Apple Install Discs" and click "Choose" to open the iDeneb v1 10.5.4 Intel/AMD Install DVD...wait for packages to load..... N.B. I have not been able to boot from my JaS OsX86 10.5.4 Client/Server Intel SSE2 SSE3 Install DVD because booting hangs at "Still waiting for root device" boot error message...... BUT it does have the complete IONetworkingFamily.kext, i.e. the full Package Contents..... , BUT the iDeneb v1 10.5.4 Intel/AMD Install DVD does not ; its IONetworkingFamily.kext has a Contents folder with only a PlugIns folder containing the AppleUSBEthernet.kext!..... 2. Type "IONetworkingFamily" (without quotes) in Find window and press Enter.....Install the IONetworkingFamily.kext to System/Library/Extensions by clicking on "Install" in Pacifist and clicking "Replace" as and when requested..... 3. Repair Permissions and reboot with"-v -f".....the following message appears on Repairing Permissions: ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library/Preferences" ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library" ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root" but AFIK these are not messages to worry about unduly..... Full Internet access is now obtained (see System Profiler under Network) together with LAN/WAN file sharing...... 17. NO WARRANTY IS IMPLIED OR GIVEN AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THESE STEPS WILL WORK FOR YOU AS THEY HAVE FOR ME. THIS GUIDE IS ONLY for INTEL CPUs NOT AMD CPU SYSTEMS AND THE SYSTEM INSTALL SELECTIONS USED IN THE GUIDE ARE FOR AN nFORCE CHIPSET MOBO. I have used the final patched version (original and PPF patch both obtained via Google searching...... ) of the Snow_Leopard_10.6.1-10.6.2_SSE2_SSE3_Intel_AMD_by_Hazard Snow Leopard......this distro is made from the Retail Mac OS X 10.6 DVD with updates 10.6.1 and 10.6.2. It is claimed to support most of the modern hardware for Intel and AMD (AMD users need to patch CPUID's with Marvin's AMD Utility) and includes the Intel Atom fixed kernel for 10.6.2 update, support for Intel Pentium 4 with Legacy Kernel, SATA Fix and more. Note that the distro Install DVD boots by default into 64bit mode AND like ALL single-layer DVD distros, is a "stripped-down" version of the Retail OS X Install DVD containing NO Printer Drivers........ INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Boot PC from Hazard Install DVD 2. When Darwin bootloader appears, press F8 and at the boot: prompt, type -v arch=i386 If you have any problems, try -v arch=i386 cpus=1 maxmem=2048 but only use maxmem=2048 if you have > 2GB RAM installed on your MOBO 3. Use Disk Utility to set up at least 2 OS X volumes of equal size (minimum 80GB, partitioned/formatted as GPT/Mac OS Extended (Journaled); one as OSX_Main and the other as OSX_Backup Note that without modification this distro install DVD cannot be used to install Snow Leopard onto MBR/Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partitioned/formatted HDD volume(s) 4. Select OSX_Main as your target install volume in the Select a Destination popup-window 5. Click on Customize button in the Install Summary popup-window, and select as follows. NOTE any Customize options not listed below HAVE NOT BEEN SELECTED! OR if you have a nVidia graphics card BUT have not chosen Graphics_Enabler in Boot_Options; in which case, choose as follows: Graphics_Drivers > NVidia_Graphic > NVEnabler NOTE: I have found that both Graphics_Enabler and NVEnabler work with my GeForce 8600GT 256MB graphics card giving CI/QE (as seen from the transparent top menu bar) but Graphics_Enabler works more cleanly during bootup, as the bootup screen shows...... Audio_Drivers > AppleAzaliaAudioAD1988b If you do not have a AD19988b audio chipset/codec, choose the listed option your MOBO audio chipset/codec requires, BUT if you are not sure which available option(s) for your audio chipset/codec to choose, then choose VoodooHDA_v2.5.3......HOWEVER, if your chipset/codec is not listed, then choose the AppleAzaliaAudio option (2channel output)....... Note: I have found that choosing the AppleAzaliaAudioAD1988b option results in VoodooHDA.kext (0.2.1) being loaded also......this produces speaker "crackles/pops" during booting but you do get sound output with the top menu bar speaker icon activated with volume control......however, in System Profiler > Audio (Built In) appears as "No Built-in Audio.".... Network_Drivers > nForceLAN unless you know exactly which of the listed drivers your MOBO onboard LAN chipset requires........if your chipset is not listed, then choose NONE....... Click on Install button.............if you wish to, you can skip the "Checking Installation DVD" process........but it is recommended that you do not....... 7. After the installlation process finishes, you will see an Install Failed warning appear in a popup window.......just ignore this warning........and click Restart button...... IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE: A. This distro Install DVD, while successful (booting from a PATA or SATA DVDRW), produces a messy Snow Leopard installation because all the patched and/or non-Apple kexts are put in /System/Library/Extensions/ rather than in /Extra/Extensions/.......so that /S/L/E is no longer an untouched pure Apple kext, i.e. vanilla kext, folder....... B. The Extensions.mkext file used during bootup from the DVD and from the Snow Leopard installation on the GPT/Mac OS Extended (Journaled) HDD volume is a problem.......primarily because it loads the SuperNForceATA.kext from Extensions.mkext.......this produces a looping error on bootup: with the FEDE messages filling up the Console All Messages log.......and slowing down booting to the Desktop.......... HENCE: 8. Reboot the PC and when the Chameleon boot-loader screen has "framed" your Snow Leopard OS X volume icon, type -v -f and this should appear to the right of "boot:" on the bottom LHS of the screen...... Note: If you wish to, you can then reboot with just -v and see the difference....... 9. Navigate from the Desktop to /System/Library/ and find an Extensions.mkext file (49.3MB) and 'drag and drop' it to Trash...... 10. Now go to the /System/Library/ Extensions folder.........find and 'drag and drop' to Trash, the following files: SuperNForceATA.kext See B. above SuperVIAATA.kext Sleepenabler.kext Does not enable sleep on nForce MOBOs AFAIK and also prevents updating to 10.6.3 11. Download and run the Mac OS X Update 10.6.3 Combo Package Installer.......after successful installation.......click on the Restart button.......as is usual the PC will reboot twice...... Note: The AppleNForceATA.kext now in /Extra/Extensions/, based on its size, appears to be the original AppleNforceATA kext version 1.0.3 by MeDevil, i.e. neither slashack's nor AnV's version 1.0.4 variant...... So, if you have any kernel panics in use, then you should replace it with either slashack's or AnV's version 1.0.4 variant......to be found in my Snow_Leopard_Support_Files_V2.3...... 12. Once everything on OSX_Main is running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 just as you want it to, you can then use Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner v3.3 to clone it to the OSX_Backup volume...... Despite a successful installation and updating to OS X 10.6.3, MY RECOMMENDATION is to do a full vanilla Snow Leopard Retail OS X Install DVD installation, with the necessary non-vanilla kexts placed, if at all possible, only in /Extra/Extensions/, using my nForce GUIDE to INSTALL Snow Leopard (10.6) on a Series 6 or 7 nForce chipset / Intel Core2 Duo or Quad or newer CPU MOBO, which explains how to do a successful installation of Snow Leopard 10.6 using either a USB flash drive installer method, or my nForceSLBoot132DVD method........

"OSx86DeFacto" USB Flash Drive OSx86 Install DVD Booter A concept & work in progress Reason for release: There are many posters in my nForce chipset + Intel CPU MOBO topics reporting difficulties in installing OSx86 (i.e. OS X Leopard on x86 system) onto a SATA HDD, most often when using a SATA DVDRW (although it must be said that some posters even have difficulties with SATA/PATA, PATA/PATA, PATA/SATA DVDRW/HDD combinations generating the now infamous "still waiting for boot device" boot screen error).... For an example of the convoluted routes that have had to be used to get a working OS X installation, see here...... For this reason, I have decided to release now, what I still regard as a concept & as work in progress that I have developed into a working solution for myself and Yossarian22 to overcome the problem of OSx86Install DVDs that were OK (i.e. with no burn or patching errors) but which would not install OSx86......a USB Flash Drive OSx86 Install DVD Booter.......called "OSx86DeFacto"..... My Concept: My idea was generated by my use of XPostFacto, which is software that enables the installation of OS X Tiger on unsupported G3 and G4 PowerMacs......namely, the concept of being able to start the boot process using a bootloader supported fully by the computer system/hardware and then pass the initiated boot process onto the OS to be installed, which would then take the boot process forward to completion..... So, based on (i) having a MOBO that supports BIOS booting from USB devices and (ii) knowing that many (BUT not all) USB flash drivers can be formatted as bootable drives, I thought about using a USB flash drive to initiate booting via the Darwin non-EFI bootloader and to then pass the boot process over to the OSx86 Install DVD in the SATA or PATA DVDRW in order to bypass the SATA/PATA, PATA/PATA, PATA/SATA DVDRW/HDD combination "booting from DVDRW/HDD boot device recognition" issues..... My Implementation: I have been able to implement this concept ONLY by standing on the shoulders of OSx86 "giants" such as ToH, Kalyway, iATKOS, etc. and by using OSx86Tools by ~pcwiz, who likewise credits the various developers etc. who have brought OSx86 development to where it is now…… Thus, I claim absolutely no credit for the component parts of the working solution that I have compiled...... My OSx86DeFacto Setup and Use Guide: How to set up and use the OSx86DeFacto USB Flash Drive OSx86 Install DVD Booter: Step 1. Obtain one or more 256MB USB Flash Drive (or higher capacity) to test for bootability, or only one if you know that it is bootable…. Step 2. Use the Partition function of Disk Utility in OS X on an Intel Mac to partition the USB Flash Drive as Master Boot Record (MBR) and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as a single partition or on the first volume as OSx86DeFacto. Step 3. Use OSx86Tools to install the Darwin non-EFI bootloader onto the USB stick by clicking on Install EFI/Run FDISK, choosing for Disk to Use: "OSx86DeFacto" and for EFI to Install: "No EFI (Darwin Bootloader)" and then clicking on Install EFI button......if successful it should say "Non-EFI Bootloader installed!". Step 4. Owners of nForce chipset + Intel CPU MOBOs who post in my nForce chipset + Intel CPU MOBO topics, who I believe have exhausted all other options for solving their DVD and/or HDD OSx86 booting problems will be invited by myself to PM me to get the download link for OSx86DeFacto, which they must agree not to (i) post in the public domain, e.g. in this forum or in other fora and/or (ii) pass on to another person or persons without my agreement. Step 5. Having downloaded the OSx86DeFacto.zip file, unzip it (using Unarchiver, BetterZip, Stuffit Expander, or whichever unzip software you use) to extract the OSx86DeFacto.dmg file. Now you have two options for copying the OSx86DeFacto.dmg file onto the USB Flash Drive BUT REMEMBER WITH EITHER OPTION DO NOT SELECT THE OPTION TO ERASE THE TARGET VOLUME i.e. the USB Flash Drive! Option A. Use Restore Function of OS X Disk Utility Use "drag and drop" to place the OSx86DeFacto USB Flash Drive volume into the Destination: box, and click the Image button to navigate to the OSx86DeFacto.dmg file and select it as the Source, or use "drag and drop" to place the OSx86DeFacto.dmg file into the Source: box. DO NOT CHECK (TICK) the Erase destination checkbox!!!! Click on Restore button. Option B. Use Carbon Copy Cloner Use Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1.1 or 3.1.2,and click on "Select a source" and choose "Restore from disk image...." for the Source Disk and then click on "Select a target"and choose "USB_Boot_JaS_iATKOS.dmg" as the source, and for the Target, select your USB memory stick OS X volume "USB_JaS_iATKOS_Bootloader"..... Now choose for Cloning options: "Backup everything" DO NOT SELECT "Erase the target volume" option or "Delete items that don't exist on the source"!!!! Ignore the "The target volume will not be bootable because a required system file (bin) does not exist at the root of the source volume." warning message. Step 6. Place the chosen OSx86 Install DVD in the SATA or PATA DVDRW of the PC onto which you want to install OSx86, then eject the USB Bootloader from your Intel Mac (or other OSx86PC) and plug it in your PC. Step 7. Determine the value of X, in rd=diskXs2 or in rd=diskXs3 as appropriate for the chosen OSx86 Install DVD, based upon the number of the number of storage/media read/write devices connected to the MOBO (whether internal or external devices), noting that X starts from 0 and Y starts from 1. For example, the first volume on the first internal HDD will have the Disk Indentifier of disk0s1, while the second volume will be disk0s2 and so on; a second internal two volume HDD would have disk1s1 and disk2s2..... It is strongly recommended that, apart from the OSx86DeFacto USB Flash Drive, you have no external storage/media read/write devices connected to the MOBO......i.e no other external devices connected unless you are attempting to install OSx86 onto an external HDD (USB2.0, eSATA or Firewire (IEEE1394a or and/or are using an external SATA or PATA DVDRW......it will simplify the matter of determining X for the SATA or PATA DVDRW..... For Leo4All v3 and other OSX86 Install DVDs, it will be a matter of initially trying rd=diskXs2 or rd=diskXs3…….there are so many now……. Step 8. Reboot your PC and press the F8 key (or whichever key you need to) IMMEDIATELY after the message "Press DEL to enter SETUP, Press TAB to display BIOS POST message" or similar appears on-screen, in order to bring up the message "Loading Boot Menu......" and when the PC BIOS "Boot Menu" window appears on-screen, select your USB flash memory drive from the list of bootable drives presented in the "Boot Menu", and press Enter...... When the Darwin Bootloader appears, press any key quickly and at the "boot:" prompt, type -v rd=diskXsY where X is your deduced value and Y is either 2 or 3 (very unlikely to be an integer higher than 3) and press Enter. If the bootloader starts loading kexts e.g. AppleNForceATA.....and freezes with "Still waiting for root device error", then the appropriate value for X in rd=diskXs2 or rd=diskXs3 has not been chosen (assuming of course that the DVD is not corrupted or damaged in any way)........so repeat Step 8 using "rd=disk3s2 -v"......etc. until booting from the OSx86 Install DVD occurs……. If booting from OSx86DeFacto fails with boot screen error messages and/or a kernel panic, and/or the booting process cannot be passed on to the OSx86 Install DVD no matter what X and Y values are tried, then I am very sorry BUT please read the DISCLAIMER above.
