1. {censored}. I jumped to conclusions without making further tests. After I restarted, I was back to square 1; same kernel panic. Seems that was a one-time lucky boot. I kept trying different FB, but they all resulted in the same KP. I then tried with boot falg: PCIRootUID=O, GE=Y, AtiConfig=Duckweed, and got another one-time lucky boot. After a restart, it failed again. Now I'm back at GE=No.

And to answer your previous question, I originally build my hackingtosh with one drive, and followed a guide that required your AndyBood CD for 10.6.7. That was working great. I then bought another drive so that I could use the xMove method to upgrade to Lion. Before, I cloned my original drive, so I had two identical (except of course for the bootloaders) drives. I tried xMove on drive 1, but it constantly failed. Then drive 2 would not boot because it did not have to bootloaders, so I run your CD on that drive. Oddly enough, I also had a hard time finding working kexts for my graphics card for that drive. I somehow managed to get drive 2 to boot (boots with GE=No, but I haven't tried GE=Yes on that drive). I then followed your guide on this thread to do a clean install of Lion on drive 1, and here I am. So, to sum up, I have 2 separate drives, one with SL, and one with Lion. Both drives have Chameleon installed on them.

Hope this helps to figure out the problem.

  2. I got it working! Reading that guide made me try different things, for example trying different boot flags, such as: PCIRootUID=1, and GE=Yes with different AtiConfig=.

I dumped the PCIRootUID=1, and just tried different framebuffers. The one that worked is Hydrilla. Weird, since I did not find any threads mentioning this FB linked to my card (and boy, did I read a {censored} load of threads). The most common FB was Duckweed, but on my system it didn't work.

Now DVD Player works, and I run a test on Cinebench. This is my result:

    14Iwi.jpg

I don't know if that is normal or not. Is it?

Also, my graphics card is recognized now:

    T1yrI.jpg

So I guess I should be happy now. I just need to know if that Cinebench result is normal, and I'll be celebrating. I do want to thank you once again for your willingness and time to help me. I very much appreciate it. You're a good man, Andy.

  3. After I run "ioreg | grep ATY":

    | | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@0 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$
    | | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@1 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$
    | | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@2 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$
    | | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@3 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$
    | | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@4 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$

Is that the correct command? i don't know any other command for IOReg.

  4. Thank you Google Translate.

Sorry, I don't speak Italian, but I have exactly the same problem with exactly the same card. However, if I change GraphicsEnabler to No, I don't have the kernel panic at startup and I can boot to Lion. But if GraphicsEnabler is set to No, Mac says my card is ATI 6XXX.

Selecting Single User mode in Chameleon with GraphicsEnabler set to Yes bypasses the kernel problem, and Lion recognizes my card as ATI 6870. But I don't want to boot each time with Single User mode.

Any help would be very appreciated.

  5. I do have two Chameleon versions (well, they're both the same version), one on each drive, but I have the BIOS drive boot order options set up so that my Lion drive is the first to boot. I've also checked and I can boot to both SL and Lion from either Chameleon version (I can only boot to Lion from either version as long as my Lion boot.plist has GraphicsEnabler set to No). So I maybe the problem resides somewhere in the ATI kexts or drivers? I've been testing this for the last hour, and everything points to having GE set to Yes. If it's set to No, I have no booting problems.

I honestly don't know the difference between having GE set to Yes vs. No. Since I do a lot of video editing in Final Cut, I want to get the best out of my graphics card, but I don't know if GE makes a difference. If I can have full power on my graphics card with GE set to No, I don't see a problem since I don't really use DVD Player.

    Any thoughts?

  6. Hello.

I followed Andy's method to install Lion on one of my drives. Everything worked out fine until I started to install apps and copy my files to the new drive. The problem started as a random kernel panic when booting into Lion from Chameleon. A simple restart (sometimes twice) would "fix" the problem and I would boot into Lion. However, a couple of days ago this problem stopped being random and became constant, and restarting would not fix anything. I get this kernen panic (which I have no idea what is means) each time I try to boot into Lion:

    WziPu.jpg

I have two separate drives on my machine, one with SL and one with Lion. I can boot into SL with no problem whatsoever. It's only the Lion drive that's causing my problem. There are currently two ways I can boot into Lion:

1.- Booting into SL, running Andy's P8P67 Pro Install Package and installing to Lion drive, rebooting into Lion.

2.- Booting into Single User mode from Chameleon.

In both cases, the problem comes up again after a shut down or restart.

Just for the sake of it, here are my boot.plist for both SL and Lion:

    BBj3Q.jpg VS. LION pnH5b.jpg

If any of you guys have any thoughts or suggestions, please share. If you need more info on my part, just ask. Thank you in advance.

  7. I have mac installations attached to each controller (intel, marvell and jmicron) (6 hdd's one of which is esata) with multiple installations for testing and 2 dvd drives) and I havn;t seen this problem so I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with the controller or kext file so I'm stumped.

Let me post this problem in the forum and see if somebody else has experienced this. You've been of great help thus far. Thank you very much.

  8. I've not seen anything like that but the fact that its random implies that its to do with your system stability. Are you overclocking?

Well, unfortunately it's not ramdom anymore; since my previous post, this has become a constant boot problem. I'm not overclocking, but here are some interesting facts:

I have two boot drives on the machine, one with SL, and one with Lion. I have no problem whatsoever booting to my SL drive. Just for the sake of it, here is the boot.plist for SL:

    BBj3Q.jpg VS LION pnH5b.jpg

When I can't boot into Lion, I restart and boot to SL. I would then run your Installer Package from SL, and install to Lion drive. After that I would restart and boot to Lion with no problem. The problem comes, I believe, when I shut down (or restart) and boot to Lion again. The only difference I notice (as the noob that I am), is that your package changes the boot.plist to GraphicsEnabler to No. However, I'm not completely sure this is the problem since I was having this boot problem (randomly) before I changed GE to Yes.

Another thing I want to point out is that my Lion drive is connected to the Marvel SATA port vs. my SL drive being connected to the Intel port on the mobo. I don't know if the problem resides on a Marvel kext or driver.

One final observation is that if I select Boot Into Single User from Chameleon, I boot into Lion with no problem, even with GE set to Yes.

I hope this can help narrow down the possible causes of this problem. This situation is specially frustrating for me because I tried the SL to Lion upgrade method many times before finding this guide, and it was just a huge waist of time. Now that your method worked, I spent a couple of weeks customizing Lion, installing all my apps and plugins, and copying all my files to the Lion drive. I really don't want to spend another 2 or 3 weeks doing this again because I'm already behind on project deadlines from work.

Anyways. I want to thank you again for your time and help.

  9. Did you remember to enable GraphicsEnabler ?

That did the trick. Thank you, and thank you for your patience with us noobs. I have one more concern, if you don't mind.

Even before I changed the GraphicsEnabler to Yes, every once in a while I get a panic kernel when I boot the computer. It usually "gets fixed" by restarting the computer one, sometimes two times, but it's very annoying. I obviously don't understand what it says, but I took a picture to see if you can see something that could be causing the problem:

    WziPu.jpg

I don't know if this is enough for you to see what the problem is, so if you need something else from me, please let me know so that I can post it here.

Again, you don't know how much I appreciate how you take the time to answer what have turned out to be stupid questions from my part. But let me just say that you are a hell of a guy.

  10. Never mind... I got it working. Not really sure what did it, but I tried a combination of ATI kexts from an original 10.6.7 install dvd, and from ##### 3.6.0, topped by a run of Kext Utility... just if anyone was curious.

    Thanks again for your help.

  11. Hi, Andy.

First off, thank you for this guide, and great job on your Andy Boot CD series.

I followed the guide using an install DMG file. I had no problem on booting from USB nor on installing Lion, but unfortunately I get a panic kernel after I select the drive I installed Lion to on Chameleon. I don't know if this is normal, but I don't see an Extra folder on that drive (even though I copied it to the USB as the guide said). I then tried copying the Extra folder you posted here to the drive, and that gave me this error: "no mach_kernel found".

I deleted the Extra folder and then tried this:

At chameleon, boot into single user...let it process and then when it gives you the option to exit, do so and you'll find yourself at the desktop of Lion! For some reason this then allows you to bypass whatever was causing the Kernel to poop itself.

... but after booting into single mode and chameleon processed it, I didn't get an exit option. This guide should work regardless of whether we use an install DMG or the Install Lion.app, right? I hope this is not what's causing the problem.

Any thoughts on what I can try to fix this problem?

    Thanks again.

  12. Thank you very much once again. Unfortunately I messed up one more time. I couldn't find a Chameleon stand alone package, so I went ahead and installed it through Andy Bood Cd 5 (I did it mostly for matters of time, since I've had to put work projects on hold because of this situation). Now I can boot from my SL drive, and everything works OK except for my graphics card, which is not recognized. I guess Andy Boot CD replaced my kexts, and for some reason the graphics card kext is not working now.

I don't want to take advantage of your good will, you've done a lot for me so far, but if you can think of any way I can solve this, I would be eternally grateful to you.

So, what I've noticed is that my Boot.plist changed from (before Chameleon install):

    	<key>AtiConfig</key>
    <string>Duckweed</string>
    <key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>Kernel</key>
    <string>mach_kernel</string>
    <key>Kernel Flags</key>
    <string>arch=x86_64</string>
    <key>Legacy Logo</key>
    <string>Yes</string>
    <key>Timeout</key>
    <string>1</string>

To this (current after Chameleon install):

    		<key>Kernel</key>
    <string>mach_kernel</string>
    <key>Kernel Flags</key>
    <string></string>
    <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
    <string>No</string>
    <key>Timeout</key>
    <string>5</string>

I tried booting with the previos Boot.plist configuration, but booting won't get passed the booting logo with the wheel spinning indefinitely. I then tried just changing the GraphicsEnabler to yes on my current Boot.plist, and same thing happens (can't get pass booting screen). The only way SL boots is with the current Boot.plist shown above with GraphicsEnabler >No<.

I also tried using Pacifist to get the ATI kexts from different packages and placing them on /System/Library/Extensions, with those two different Boot.plist, and nothing seemed to work.

This is what my system profiler shows for my graphics:

    Display:

     Type:	GPU
     Bus:	PCIe
     PCIe Lane Width:	x16
     VRAM (Total):	3 MB
     Vendor:	ATI (0x1002)
     Device ID:	0x6738
     Revision ID:	0x0000
Kernel Extension Info:	No Kext Loaded
     Displays:
      Display:
     Resolution:	1024 x 768
     Pixel Depth:	32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
     Main Display:	Yes
     Mirror:	Off
     Online:	Yes

Again, if you can think of anything I can try to fix this issue, I would very much appreciate it if you could let me know. If not, you've been of great help, and I thank you for that.

  13. Thank you very much for your detailed response. You've cleared a lot of things for me. I now understand what I must do, but not quite sure how. I was looking at Andy's Boot Cd and this is what it says it installs:

    74h8m.jpg

Also, (and I know this is from another forum, so I hope it's not an inconvenience) there's the ##### option, which says it installs:

    KCRg3.jpg

I can't seem to find the ModCD you mention. I did a search in this forum for it but it only returned posts which mention it, not posts that point to it.

So, just to make sure, running either of those two options I mentioned above will install a bootloader AND not mess up my current working SL system? ##### does not mention if it installs Chameleon or Chimera, but I guess either of those two would work?

Please excuse my ignorance. Little by little I'm getting familiar with all of these concepts and terminology. Thanks again for your help.

  14. Hello,

My frist post here. So I've been running SL for a while (installed with the help of AndyBoot CD v4) and decided to finally upgrade to Lion. As a precaution measure, I did a full backup of my drive (clone) using SuperDuper. After a successful upgrade on my original drive, I started playing around with some preference files and graphics kexts. I did not know what I was doing, yet I was stupid enough to do it. Long story short, I messed up my Lion installation and I cannot boot it up from Chameleon. I can, however, choose my SL dive from Chameleon and work from it.

Cutting to the chase, I've noticed that my cloned drive does not have Chameleon installed. On my BIOS, the first boot drive is my original drive (the one with Lion) and my second one is the one with SL. If I switch the order and make my SL drive the first to boot, Chameleon will not load (I just see a black screen with a white ___ line). Even though I cannot boot my Lion drive from Chameleon, Chameleon works on that drive, but not on my SL one.

So, finally moving on to my point: I've asked for help on how to fix the bootloader problem on my Lion drive but so far I've had no luck. To avoid hassle, I've decided to clone my current SL drive onto my Lion drive (clone of a clone), and try to upgrade to Lion one more time, but I have some concerns:

1.- Why did SuperDuper did not make an exact clone of my drive with all the bootloaders included?

2.- My Lion drive (original drive) will not boot from Chameleon, but it has Chameleon installed, and I use it to boot up my other drive. I want to erase my Lion drive (the one with Chameleon) by making a clone of my SL to it, but I'm afraid that if I format it, I will lose the Chameleon bootloaders, and I won't be able to boot to ANY of my drives. So, are there any files I can manually copy from my non-booting Lion drive to my SL drive so that it will have Chameleon installed, and so that I can boot directly to it from the BIOS?

3.- Say none of the above questions are logical or viable. How can I install Chameleon or Chimera on my current, working SL drive without messing things up?

4.- Say question 3 is viable, and I make it work. How can I then clone that drive to make it an exact copy, with everything included, so I can upgrade to Lion one more time?

5.- Just for the sake of it, what exactly does AndyBoot CD do? Yes, I'm a total noob and have no idea what I'm doing or what I did when I followed the guide to install SL in the first place. I just followed the guide step by step. I think that understanding how AndyBoot works, and what it exactly installs on my system will allow me to understand how Chameleon or Chimera are installed.

Phew. That was a lot to compile. Anyway, I really hope someone can help me answers some of this questions, if not all of them. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions will be much appreciated.

    Thank you.
