  1. After a few days of frustration trying to figure out why my overclock scores were low on the P6X58D-E, I found the cause to be the newest vanilla Darwin 10.3.1 kernel. At first the new kernel was about 50% slower than the 10.3 kernel, which is installed by the guides in this thread. After some googling and proper configuration, the vanilla Darwin 10.3.1 kernel consistently gives between a 7-9% performance increase according to GeekBench 64-bit in my tests. My average GeekBench scores 10.3.1 kernel @ 4.0Ghz = 13,050 10.3 kernel @ 4.0Ghz = 12,180 I had two simple options to regain the performance lost: 1) install NullCPUPowerManagement 2) or, enable SpeedStep in the BIOS The best option is step #2. I always thought that enabling speedstep was a no-no for overclocking. Well, yes and no. It's important that speedstep is disabled to determine the correct settings for overclocking. However, after successful stress testing, re-enabling speedtest does not seem to be detrimental. I reran my stress tests last night and everything seems to be in order.   2. Usually when OCing to 4.0Ghz, you don't want to leave anything to chance by using Auto or having SpeedStep on. Have you stress tested it? I usually run LinX at full memory for at least 25 passes in Win7 x64. I wouldn't worry too much the difference between 11387 and 11680. GeekBench scores fluctuate.
  3. Do you have SpeedStep enabled in the BIOS for your overclock? Post #73 had issues as well with low GeekBench scores. That's how I discovered NullCPUPowerManagement was the key to getting better scores on my setup. Anyway, the machine is performing well and I'm at about the same score as you. Still, it bothers me not knowing why I have to load the NullCPU kext when others don't. Update ===== I figured out why my GeekBench OC scores were low. I am using the newest 10.3.1 vanilla mach_kernel since I used [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]-Supported booter instead of boot-132. boot-132 was not working for me. Anyway, there are performance implications if things are not patched in the DSDT or NullCPU is not installed. See Darwin 10.3.1 kernel
  4. Congrats! I have the same CPU and mainboard. Would you mind doing GeekBench score on your OC settings and then do one using defaults in the BIOS? Mine was actually slower OCed until I installed the NullCPUPowerManagement kext.

  6. Yes, only NullCPU. I think the 930 is why User_01 suggested I build my own DSDT. The other option is enable speedstep in the BIOS, which as you know is not a good idea for OCing.
  7. The usual kexts found in the attachments from this thread: AppleYukon2 FakeSMC HDAEnabler IOAHCI LegacyHDA I also had to install NullCPUPowerManagement. Without that my 3.8Ghz overclock was actually slower per GeekBench than the default settings for the i7 930. See post #193.
  8. I do not have a premium board, i have the P6X58D-E. I was instructed by User_01, if I remember correctly, to generate my own DSDT because of performance issues using my overclock settings.
  9. I was having really slow drive access on SATA ports 2-6. I had to apply this fix and recompile DSDT. DSDT fix for slow drives See post #179 I generated my own DSDT for P6X58D-E using DSDT Patcher. I'm not sure if this is in the Premium DSDT found in the files in this thread. Does anybody have a list of fixes they made to the Premium DSDT?

    From what I remember when I put mine together, a 5770 is not supported by Apple nor the community. You will need an ATI 4xxx series, Nvidia 9800GTX+ or 2xx series to get close to the performance of the 5770. Search for tonymacx86 gigabeast, I think he uses that same mainboard. Kakewalk is another option.

    I think FileMaker. I have never used it. Personally, I think you should use server databases like Mysql or PostgreSQL and create reports using HTML. There are many frameworks that create forms from tables and let you CRUD. That process is called scaffolding. I use Ruby on Rails even for desktop web apps since 10.5/10.6+ come with Ruby pre-installed. Even better, is that web programming skills are much more in demand than knowing how to code a desktop database.

  13. I followed instructions. Upon boot, I created and moved newly created dsdt.aml into /Extra. Then, I removed NullCPU and OHRestart kext from E/E. Ran Kext Utility. Rebooted Without those two files => 7,763 Reboot with those two files => 11, 943
  14. Really stumped about benchmarking. After several hours of investigation, I found two settings which adversely affect the performance of my 3.8Ghz overclock: GeekBench score: SpeedStep Enabled in BIOS = 12,445 Disabled = 7,316 That's more than a 5,000 point difference in GeekBench. I ALWAYS disable SpeedStep when overclocking because I don't want the OS/CPU changing the sensitive values I entered for my stress tests. (this is not an issue in Windows 7) The next thing I tried was install NullCpuPowerManagement.kext without SpeedStep. NCPM installed in /Extra = 11,686 removed = 7,389 Huh? Why does installing that actually help my overclock performance?
  15. I might reinstall then. Installing directly from a MBP to an attached USB drive would be much simpler. There's a 64 bit com.apple.Boot.plist option in [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]. I tried it and my system boots in 64-bit. Verify through System Profiler utility -> Software -> 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: Yes You should not have to run in safe mode once you have SL installed. I only had to use the -x switch for installation.
