apianti got a reaction from besttoasterovens in Intel CPU hardware vulnerability
    Hey guys and gals,

Just found this article about how the Linux team discovered a vulnerability in almost all Intel CPUs. Both Windows and Linux are rolling out an update that will decrease all Intel CPUs performance by at least 17% if not up to 25%. Unsure what the macOS timeline is. It has to do with being able to inject code from mundane places by exploiting the speculative instruction feature that attempts to guess what instructions will be coming next in the pipeline to gain access to the kernel memory. There is no security check when this happens apparently and seems like a pretty big deal as the problem appears not to be able to be fixed in hardware at all as Intel says the issue cannot be fixed with a microcode update.

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/02/intel_cpu_design_flaw/

EDIT: This is one of my favorite lines:

EDIT2: The scale of this is immense, looks like half the worlds computers might have this vulnerability. They literally have to update the entire Azure, AWS, and GCE clouds because of this.
EDIT3: This can be used to cause a virtual machine to bypass the hypervisor mode of the CPU and gain access to the kernel mode of the host machine!!! OMG this is a very very bad vulnerability.
EDIT4: I also see reports that some older Intel CPUs may take a performance hit of 30% or more.
EDIT5: The performance hit depends on the IPC of the CPU, the presence of CPID feature, and the amount of instructions supported by the CPU since the more instructions, the more the speculative instruction feature includes exceptions/undocumented instructions that can be exploited.
EDIT6: For reference, IPC for specific CPUs models.

apianti got a reaction from fantomas in This site is a disaster. Is it ever maintained?
Is this site still maintained? There are constant caching issues with expired certificates. Posting takes on the magnitude of tens of minutes in some instances (it's always at least thirty seconds and seems to be getting worse as time moves from the relaunch) causing lots of double posting, which then become merged. However, the merge is broken so you can't properly edit or quote these comments, if you can at all anyway. Because sometimes you randomly get that you can't edit your own comment, or that the content does not exist to edit. I won't get a notification or see a response while I'm logged in (even if I clear the cache) but I log out and then I see that there are multiple responses, log back in and I don't see them, then like some period of time later it notifies me and they appear. Search is dead, if you can actually get a response, there are always zero results. What is going on? These are just absolutely killing the ability to use this site. Is there any forum optimization or software updating happening? I see basically all of these things every time I'm at the site.... It's getting very old.

I'm done with this site. It is unusable. The owners don't give two s h i t s about it, and it shows. I made a bug complaint and the topic was locked so I can't respond or anything, but it basically amounted to "oh well," shrug. There's more ads than actual content on pages if you don't use an ad-blocker, and when you can actually get a good certificate, the page takes forever, if it actually does, to load, let alone actually try to perform an action. Good luck with anything that needs AJAX, you might as well just invent a time machine send the information back to the past to be delivered by telegram because it would appear to actually be a plausible working solution compared to the site. The owner's will make no money when this site is not being used anymore because it's impossible to use and not be fuming angry at the site within minutes. So maybe they should just sell it if they don't intend to actually maintain it? They can also go {censored} themselves. They seem like the biggest {censored} in existence. Goodbye.

EDIT: My comment was edited and censored. Hahaha.... Uncensored!

    1) look in the system log see the reason for (instant wake) search for PMRD
log show --today  --predicate 'processImagePath contains "kernel" ' | egrep -i "wake|pmrd"

    2) you could perhaps compare your old DSDT (where sleep works) to the OC patched DSDT to see where there are diffs.

    ----- my 2 cents
I believe the point of the comment is:  let OC patch APCI for you. And you dont need to provide the DSDT since it is aready readily available.

for me with my SandyBridge hack for example - 98% of the ACPI mods/edits/patches were hand-edited in the DSDT or with RehabMan tools etc - thats how it was done in those days.  I.E. the era before the more popular "hot-fix" method of ACPI patching or now we have OC + SSDT etc. so the point it is, I chose to use my already fixed up macOS compatible DSDT.aml with OC. but that was my choice.

Well, the advice is not really different: EnableWriteUnprotector, ProtectMemoryRegions, RebuildAppleMemoryMap, SetupVirtualMap, SyncRuntimePermissions. Try all combinations. 2^5 variants.

Ok i have renamed my entry on my laptop and it shows Arch Linux correctly without any modifications to config.plist. Arch still does not boot with OC. I am wondering if it is because i have my dGPU disabled for macOS?

Such issues are usually caused by incompatible Booter Quirk set (e.g. RebuildAppleMemoryMap, ProtectUefiServices, SyncRuntimePermissions, ProtectMemoryRegions, etc.). You should also make sure that your ACPI tables contain nothing bad. See this issue for some relevant information:

Yeah, I'm cool. I tore my abdomen from my right groin up into rib cage, I had to have a mesh inserted to fix the herniation. Surgery wasn't anything compared to having to deal with that this entire year since it happened in january...

Yeah, I keep hearing others say that they are having issues with some time delay but I don't see any commonality among them at all. I am trying to think about what else could be causing it but ACPI issues... I don't even have a guess at another answer currently actually.

EDIT: Actually, seeing that the problem is that image codec driver but the code base for that driver was integrated into OC guessing the driver is missing something... I'm unsure what parts. Funny, that's the reason they used to take control of AptioFix, because it was integrated into clover, it couldn't be used or contributed by others (except it could)... then they integrated all this stuff into OC, and now it can't be used by others, lol......

Yeah I want to switch to an NVIDIA because CUDA processing, I had a class and it really sucked having to do it over ssh to a massive gpu rig at the school. Plus I realized how much you can optimize data experiments with a gpu, it's crazy. I've had this RX 580 nitro+ since launch because it was one of the models that macOS specifically supported from sapphire in that external thunderbolt enclosure.

Nah, I wouldn't be using that for macOS. But it is a newer revision of the 970evo, basically just has faster transfer rates. I will actually use my 960evo for macOS, I just made this only windows so I can clone it then install macOS back onto it. I just got ahead of myself since I use windows a lot more because of certain software and I'm like stuck where I am...

Sorry to hear about another surgery, hope you're all good now... Hope you have a quick recovery and good health, it's what matters most.

I'm not having the issue personally, I don't use FileVault at all, was just basically sick of seeing that issue open like forever, lol, and remembered you added some stuff related to FileVault some time ago, that's why I wondered if you can reproduce it.

No, I have no AMD card atm. Using Nvidia in Windows and Intel on macOS.

About samsung nvme, you should probably double check that the model you mention is not problematic with macOS. Some Samsung's are known to be really problematic with Mac, don't remember about the model you mention. Personally, regarding nvme, I had much better experience with models you can reformat to 4K. I used to have some really nasty issues with 512k nvme's so I decided to stick to 4k (these issues may or may not be solved with Catalina though, never dared to check again...)

Oh, I just realized that as well. I never noticed that before, lol. The cyrillic one is more tall and open where the latin one is shorter and more closed.

In GCC 10, they added a non-standard extended identifiers extension, enabled by default.

Because this is not a problem in the other compilers since they accept extended character sets for some reason by default... What is wrong with the theme? What needs to be done to fix it? It's just missing that file, can you not just grab it from another theme or make it? Why not try to convert the old theme to svg?

There is an error in the file encoding. The C is encoded in some combined form in UTF-8 or something, see attached screenshot from hex editor showing invalid characters.

EDIT: Just so you see this is actually the cyrillic character С (es) not the latin character C (se):
