A Few Interesting Bits About 1.1.3

There is really no interesting news today, beside Apple stock dropping horribly, and I don't want to write about that. So here are a few things about the 1.1.3 update for the iPhone and the iPod touch. There are a few interesting changes in 1.1.3 that make it possible for iTunes to install official applications on it without an update. This is because the user of the phone is no longer root, but 'mobile.' There are no official applications out yet, but it can explain why the "iPod touch Upgrade Package" could actually be installed. But this is bad for third party apps, for most store their preferences in /var/root/Library/Preferences. That means that most third party applications will have to be edited. Also, SpringBoard has been rewritten so that it doesn't have to be relaunched to show new applications in /Applications. Another interesting tidbit is that it appears to have widget support. Not much more is known about that at this time. This one is pretty cool. You can now add speed dial icons on the home screen. Depending on the way you want to do it you can have a pretty icon or not. If you want the pretty icon, all you have to do is enter "number.tel.qlnk.net," press cancel and then add to home screen. You will have a pretty icon and whenever you press it it will ask you if you want to call said number. If you don't want to go through a 3rd party server, press add bookmark and enter "tel://number" as the address. This cannot be added to the home screen. Full Story

    DownGrade your iPhone!

So, you upgraded your hacked, or unlocked, iPhone and now it is bricked. What are you going to do? Now, thanks to TUAW and 9to5Mac, you can downgrade your iPhone from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2. This downgrade is not very complicated, and, chances are, that if you were able to unlock it, you should be able to downgrade it. The downgrade process requires finding a few files on the internet, and adding them to one of the iPhone's folders. Once you've done that, simply type in some commands in Terminal and you are done! You have now downgraded your iPhone and it is now usable. On a side note, the person who wrote this article said that TUAW's Erica Sadun is single handedly turning TUAW from a pompom flailing Apple Fanboy site into a L33T hacker underworld. 9to5Mac's Article TUAW's Full Guide

    Transport Tycoon Deluxe for iPhone

First it was NES, then GameBoy, then PSX, now Transport Tycoon Deluxe. It seems that more and more games are being ported to the iPhone/iPod touch. This is the first multiplayer internet game that has been ported. But you do need a copy of the PC version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe. I'm sure you can find a copy of these files floating around the interwebs, but I can't post them here. You need to install OpenTTD from Installer, put a few files from the TTD disk into a folder on the iPhone...and BAM. You're playing Transport Tycoon Deluxe on your iPhone. The list of files and more sceenshots can be found at the "Full Story" link. He also said that he is working on a SimCity port for the iPhone. This is REALLY REAL. New iPhone Ads

During football season, there is only one thing that is certain. New iPhone ads. There are three new ads, starring Doug, Elliot and Stephano. All of these ads are using everyone's favorite "switch" style that Apple uses on Mac ads. In these ads, either Doug, Elliot, or Stephano are standing in black, and talk about how the iPhone changed their lives, and then walk away to what they were doing before. It looks sort of like an interview. Full Story Link to the New Ads

    Amazon Launches DRM-Free Music Store

Amazon just released the Public Beta of Amazon MP3 today. Their store currently has 2 million songs, compared to iTunes' 6 million. The one thing that could threaten Apple here is that all 2 million of those songs are DRM-free. Also, Amazon MP3's DRM-free songs are a mere $.99, the same as Apple's DRM songs. The DRM-free songs on the iTunes Music Store are $1.29, which is about 30% more. But to the average end user, many people assume that they will just buy an iPod and not even care if the songs have a DRM or not. Although every song is encoded at higher quality as an MP3 at 256 kilobits per second -- as high as Amazon's rival Wal-Mart and slightly behind the 256Kbps AAC files of iTunes Plus. This is one of the more serious threats to Apple's market share. Full Story

    Ho-ho-ho!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse! The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! "Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On Comet! On Cupid! On Donner! On Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!" He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight... Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night! ~The InsanelyMac Staff

    ƒrench iPhone Unlocking

So where will a 649 euro ($965) iPhone get you these days? Apparently no where out of France. That's right, Apple has screwed up again. The iPhones that were bought unlocked only appear to have been unlocked to French carriers. Any attempt to use a carrier outside of France will render the iPhone's phone features useless. But Apple has stepped up, and said that this IS a screw up, and that a new firmware update will be out shortly that will allow the unlocked iPhone to actually be unlocked. This could be what delayed the firmware update that was supposed to appear last weekend on out iPhones. Full Story

    10.5.3 Available as an update!

10.5.3 is finally available as a downloadable update. The update itself weighs in at a hefty 420MB. As with most Apple updates, it wasn't very descriptive, stating only: As with all updates, DON'T INSTALL, unless you have a vanilla kernel, or until some more testing has been done. Australia: No pr0n 4 u!

Besides China, Australia is now the 2nd country to filter out pornography and violence sites. The Australian government is now requiring ISPs to filter out the so called "smutty" material. When the user goes to these sites, they will most certainly be met with a block. The users can opt out in and decline to let their internet be filtered, but imagine the look on parents faces when they see that their 14 year old son has just enabled the porn to flow in. No more porn for Kiko! Didn't really know what to put here, so here is a map of Australia Full Story(Video)
