  1. Realtek 8168/8111 solution

Thanks so much for sharing! Is there some place to download the latest compiled release somewhere? I take it that you have made some changes since Oct 20th?
  2. 10.6.2 is out...

EX 58 UD5 and Nvidia gtx 260 with vanilla SL 10.6.1 updated to 10.6.2 (almost) without any issues. I did forget to delete the old SleepEnabler.kext so my system KPd upon first reboot. I booted from an old installation HDD and replaced the SleepEnabler.kext with the patched one from netkas. Now everything runs smoothly.
  3. 1) move the IONetworkingFamily.kext to some other dir (like your desktop) 2) open it and drag the Realtek kext into the plugins dir 3) use the KExt Utility to re-install the IONetworkingFamily kext 4) reboot :-)
  4. Klammeraffe unter MAC OS X

Hallo! :-)
  5. I have sent my email request to them yesterday. Actually I decided to use the blunt approach and asking them where to download the 64bit version. :-) So let's hope this new interest will shake things up a bit and will result in a "native" 64bit kext!
  6. Hi there! Would you please tell me how you were able to get your onboard 8111 NICs up and running with the native/legacy Apple8169 kext? The only way I get my NICs to work is by using the psystar 8111 RTL1000 driver which does not work properly in 64bit mode and also has those mulitcast issues. Thanks for your help! Let's put it this way: a) most people I know who have built their HachMac based on an i7 use 12Gig of ram (= 2x3x2Gig) most of those people have installed those 12gig so that their applications can make use of it c) the kernel HAS TO BE in 64bit otherwise an application WILL NOT be able to address more than 32bits of ram In plain and simple words: if you want any application to benefit from being able to use more than 4gig of RAM then you NEED the 64bit kernel. So please stop patronizing people about how "stoopid" we all are just because we want to make use of our hardware in a way it is meant to be.
  7. Hey there, Great post! I have the EX-58 UD5 running with GTX-260 as well. Instead of the VodooHDA I am using the native AppleHDA with a legacyHelper Kext (had to patch0 my DSDT so that the ALC889a would be recognized). My issue though is the network adapter. The psystar RTL KEXT is only properly running with the 32bit kernel. As soon as I try to switch to 64bit then the NIC would not really work anymore. Good indication for that is whether or not DHCP works or not. That's why I got myself a Marvel Yukon based DLINK 530T PCI add-in NIC and used that with the skge 0.2f (from this board). 64bit would work but the performance would be not acceptable (<10mbps on a 1000mbps link). So here I am back on 32bit kernel and really desperate in getting this to work as it should. I just saw that Realtek released a MacOS driver kit about 4 weeks ago and my hopes are that I simply need to tell SL to use those AppleIONetworking driver (the Realtek drivers are updating the 8169 plugin KEXT) by patching my DSDT. The question though is: HOW? :-) What's your solution for the NIC issue? Since your post-subject tells me that you're running 64bit - how do you do it? Cheers!
  8. Marvell Yukon 8001 - the driver

Hi there! Thanks again for providing the 64bit kext. I got myself a DLink 530T and I can confirm that it works with skge 0.2f in 64 bit. I have a GA EX-58 UD5 with RTL 8111 onboard and this thread - or the availability of a 64bit driver for the Marvel chip - made me get this extra PCI add-card to finally get my 64bit kernel running. Unfortunately I had to switch back to the RTL and 32 bit kernel again because unfortunately the performance of the skge kext is absolutely unaccetable. Instead of nearly 900mbps (on the GigE link) I get with my RTL I only get about *FIVE* mbps with the skge. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Or even better: would anyone have a solution for this? Best regards, Marcus
  9. Ok, congrats for coming so far. As I said you will be getting there... :-) Don't worry about the Firewire error. You will not have the issue once you have installed SL. The iAtkos is only supposed to be your platform for preparing your new HD - nothing more. What kind of GPU do you use? I suggest the following next step: a) use "-s" as boot option at the prompt enter: mount -uw / mkdir /bckup mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* /bckup OR (if you have an NVIDIA cad) mv /System/Library/Extensions/NV* /bckup reboot c) then use options -v -x -x32 arch=i386 (I am not 100% sure which bootloader iAtkos uses so by issuing -x32 and arch=i386 you make sure that the system will boot in 32bit mode) Good luck... :-)
  10. I feel you... :-) a) don't waste your time with Kalway get iAtkos instead (latest should be v7 with Leo 10.5.7) c) now - and this is really important: when you boot the iAtkos DVD make sure to press a key to enter into the boot loader console and then type "busratio=20" (obviously without the "). Without that you will not be able to boot any of the newer distros and instead will be faced with a boot loop d) install iAtkos by clicking ok / continue at all the questions - no need to get fancy you just need to get it to run once in order to format your target HD and run the SL installation script (from the 1st post in this thread) which includes running the original SL installer from the SL DVD you should have handy at that point. If iAtkos will not properly boot for you once you have installed it then try to use -x -x32 -f at the boot prompt. If you get a black (or some black / white blocks) screen 10-20 seconds after the boot right before it should display the finder then you need to boot into single mode (option -s) and move all your GPU vendor's KEXT to some other folder. But let's cross that bridge when and if you ever get there... :-) e) from there on you should stick to DD's first post here Hope that helps! Don't lose your faith - you will get there eventually and it will be well worth the pain. :-)
  11. Awesome post! Galaxies 32k running on 1900x1200 in SL 10.6.1 i7 920 @ 3.4GHz GTX 260 Vector Single Core CPU: 14 Vector Multi Core: 57 (that's what I call proper multi-core scaling!) GPU: 275! Came up from 180 with the 8k benchmark! CPU+GPU: 95 I really love the 260's performance. For that pricepoint (got for €140) it really shines.
  12. Marvell Yukon 8001 - the driver

Awesome! Thanks a lot! I built my SL HackMac based on the GA EX-58 UD5 and that board is using a Realtek 8111. There is currently no way to get that to work properly in 64bit mode so I jumped for joy as I just stumbled over this post. I immediately purchased the DLink 530T and will try to get everything to work as soon as it arrives (hopefully in two days from now). I will update this post then. Again, thanks for your effort and time spent!
  13. Hi there! Thanks for providing all this invaluable information. Thanks to all you guys (especially digital dreamer and netkas) I was able to successfully install SL on my EX-58 UD5 based "HackMac". My only issue is that those RTL drivers for the onboard Realtek 8111 GigE will not work properly when I boot the system in 64bit mode. It does boot and the two NICs are visible and show a cable as being connected but there is nothing going across. I have my NICs on DHCP and SL will only assign "internal" IPs because it cannot see any DHCP packets. Obviously it would be very nice to run SL in "native" 64bit mode so that all 64bit applications are able to actually make use of more than 4gig of RAM. So the questions are: a) Anyone has a better / updated driver for the Realtek chipset? If not then I suppose my best bet is to get an Intel PCI-E Ethernet adapter, correct? Any particular model I should look for? Thanks for your help guys!
  14. Just wanted to thank you guys and especially DD for this excellent tutorial! I finally managed to get my EX-58 UD5 up and running with SL! Just a quick recap of my major obstacles and how I managed to solve them: a) wasn't able to boot any of the "new" distributions to install my SL from. Kalyway was the only DVD I managed to boot but I failed to start the installed Leopard. iDeneb, iAtkos, iPC and XXX all gave me the "boot loop" issue. Fortunately enough the solution was rather simple. Just enter "busratio=20" at the Chameleon boot prompt and the boot process will run through smoothly. Oh and don't even think about connecting a HD to the Gigabyte's SATA ports. Only the INTEL native SATA ports work at that point. Otherwise you will get a KP. Using iAtkos I managed to boot into Leopard but ONLY using the -s (Singlemode) boot option first and manually moving away all ATI* related KEXTs from S/L/E. At that time I had a ATI 4850 which I wanted to use for my HackMac. c) Then I prepared the new drive and used your script to install SL from a retail DVD (€29 - what a steal). d) I had to move the ALC889a and the RealtekR1000 KEXTs from /Extra to /System in order to get them to work e) Also - don't try to boot into 64bit mode. The Realtek drivers will NOT work correctly. Instead you will see your NICs but they will only get some "internal" IP if you are configured for DHCP. If you have manually configured your IP it will all look ok but you just don't get any packets across the line. f) I gave up on the ATI 4850 (after numerous attempts with dozens of different ways) and got myself a GTX 260. Tell you what - that thing just worked! Maybe because I had installed some KEXT drivers from Netkas.org first. I cannot really tell. So, that's it. I am loving my new 3.4GHz / 12 Gig / GTX260 (QE!) system which I built for roughly €1100. If I compare that to a 12Gig 2.93 GHz MacPro QuadCore which sells at about €4000 then I guess I made a good deal. ;-)
  15. Hi there! First off thanks for the excellent tutorial! I had installed a fresh HD from my "real" MacPro running SL. That's why I chose PC-EFI instead of Chameleon 2 RC3 and I obviously also did not use the DSDT patcher as I was preparing the HD not from my Hackintosh but rather from a real Macintosh. :-) Eventually I changed HDs and booted my HacMac. Everything went smooth until the point where the graphics should have kicked in. Instead I got a black screen with white rectangles (real messy). I decided to boot safe mode with option -x and that brought me right into SL. Then I moved all ATI* kext away from S/L/E and that allowed me to boot the system in "normal" mode. The next thing I realised was that the NICs did not work. I googled a bit and copied the entire /Extras folder of some EX58-UD5 kext zip I had found. That did the trick and now I had a running HackMac SL but still without support for my ATI 4850. Now finally - here comes the real problem: I have found a thread in this forum on how to get the 4850 to work. And one solution was to upgrade the PC-EFI with the latest one being based on Chameleon RC3. So I renamed my old /boot into /boot_bck and copied the new PC-EFI boot to my root dir. I also changed the com.apple.Boot.plist to include the GraphicsEnabler (or some rather similiar key - don't really remember the exact key name now). *THEN* I rebooted and NOW I am stuck completely because my new PC-EFI bootloader won't boot anymore. It tells me that there is no "mach_kernel" to boot from. My questions are: a) am I entirely f*cked now? :-) does my SL kernel file mabye have a different name which I could boot by simply typing its name at the boot prompt? c) if not - is there a way to access the HD from either Linux or Windows to change back the boot loader? I am REALLY hoping that some of you guys will be able to help me!
