  1. How to copy a disk using dd command?

<br /><br /><br />Thanks guys, however, I want to make an exact copy of my disk, so that i i were to swap my external and my internal I'd see absolutely no difference.
  2. Although i'm using mac os x, it's rather a Linux/BSD question, so it goes there... I think. So, as I noticed, MacOS X's Disk Utlity doesn't allow to make a copy of the whole disk, only it's partitions (which sucks, as bootloader won't be copied then.). As both my laptop's hard disk and my spare external hard disk are both seagates 320gb (one is 7200rpm, second is 5400rpm), I've decided to make a copy of my disk onto my external, as it's doing nothing at the moment. So, I'm going to use dd command. However, I've had some... bad times with dd, so I'm little paranoiac now. As now, I'll try to do this - dd if=/dev/disk0 of=/dev/disk1 . But then, I don't know whether it's correct. I don't know what's the difference between /dev/diskNumber and /dev/rdiskNumber, and google found me nothing. so which one should I use? Also, what should i set as block size? Leave it blank, or set bs=512? Calculate the count value or leave it blank?
  3. So, can anybody help me with that one last problem?
  4. Stopping program start up

Try - System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items. There you can either hide the application or remove it completely from start-up list.
  5. I was able to fix the sound and touchpad issue, but still, it boots long, Also, the main problem now is Nvidia Geforce 9200M GS. I'm able to set the resolution, but no qe/ci, and it works slow. Can't set transparency, either. So, is there any working EFI string or injector for this card? 6. I'm still unable to fix it. So, i'm bumping the topic.
  7. I've posted that topic already in 10.6 installation section, but i think that was a wrong place to post the thread, so i'd like to repost the questions there, as maybe it's the more suitable place. So, i currently have samsung q210 laptop (specifications - Here), that is currently running 10.5.7. Everything works : I use CoreVidia injector, voodooPS2 with trackpad and VoodooHDA. So, i bought 10.6, and i've prepared the external drive. Installation works ok. I install OHR, PlatformUUID, fakeSMC, and NCPUPM kexts, and chmod and chown them appropriately. I also install modified DSDT.aml. I also install chameleon RC3. And there the problems begin. I search this forum for appropriate kexts for PS2 and HDA. First question: What shall i do with those prefPanes that are in downloaded packages? Where to put them? Ok, anyway, so i install VoodooPS2 with the apple ps2 nub in the package and HDA. I also create an EFI string for my video card. And here's another problem - the setup hangs when booting with efi string, or with GraphicsEnabler - Yes in boot.plist. WIthout them, it can start. So, how do i make an EFI string, or what's the newest NVidia injector for my card for SL? Next problem - looooong boot time. It takes two to three minutes to boot it. What's the problem? Next problem - No sound during the startup. So, SL's VoodooHDA is not working on my ALC226. But it works on my leopard. What to do? Next problem - Keyboard is detected. But my touchpad doesn't work, so i can't get past through the initial setup. I don't have any mouse ATM, and even if, i'd be more than unwilling to use it, because that's a laptop that's often used in places where it's impossible to use the mouse. What to do?
  8. Bumping the topic. Also, is that section of the forum a good place to ask these questions, or shall i move that topic to the Post-Installation Discussion section?

  10. So, I'm doing Hillegass book, and i'm stuck on chapter 13 challenge. The I've done it 90%, but then, one thing still remains: "Don't forget to update the window to reflect the new defaults" So, how do i do that? How do i refresh a NSWindowController window? Because when i click the "reset settings" button, the state of the objects on the window (in this case, a ColorWell and a checkbox) stay the same until i manually reopen the window.
  11. Theoretically, you are right. I can implement these things myself. However, why ram the doors that are already open? I've read about using key paths in the Hillegass's book, he gave an example how to use it, and I tried to use it. Because in my case the problem is always between the laptop and the chair, it didn't work. And as such, I'm asking, what to do to make it work? Or, guessing there's another problem between a laptop and a chair, is my thinking correct?
  12. So, I've began learning how to program in obj-c. As for now, it goes well, but I'm stuck at the moment. The problem is, i have a NSMutableArray that contains NSNumber. I want to use @avg, @min and like. My code doesn't work. It shows 0. So, what's the problem here? srand(time(NULL)); for(int i=0;i<10;i++){ NSNumber* number = [[NSNumber alloc] initWithInt:(rand()%80)]; NSLog(@"%d",[number intValue]); [array addObject:number]; } NSNumber* avg = [array valueForKeyPath:@"@avg"]; NSLog(@"%s:%d","AverageValue",avg); NSNumber* count = [array valueForKeyPath:@"@count.intValue"]; NSLog(@"%s:%d","Count",count); I've used two different syntaxes for this. First, i tried the count.intValue, and then i tried only avg, without anything (how's that supposed to work, i do not know, it was nothing but wild guessing on my side here. Idiotic, i know.). So, how it should look like here?
  13. Just three questions for all you people - I'm looking for that network usage upper bar addon. How it's called? How can i add the eject icon to the upper bar? How can i change disks icons?
  14. Ok, i found that commandline option (http://mattdanger.net/2008/12/adjust-mac-os-x-display-brightness-from-the-terminal/), and the error I have is - brightness: failed to get brightness of display 0x28cc9140 (error -536870201) Also, to make it clear - Efi strings don't work at all. Chameleon 2 rc2 also doesn't work. Only injectors work. That doesn't matter now, as i have full qe/ci, but still i can't change brightness!
  15. So, as I find myself using my samsung q210 (specs: http://www.trustedreviews.com/laptops/revi...-2-Notebook/p5) nowhere near any power sockets, changing brightness is something that i find really useful. I can get qe/ci (at least, I think so, as it's only my limited knowledge on the matter that allows me to determine this) with NvKush, or Natit, or CoreVidia, but no brightness options in display settings, nor does keyboard shortcut works. I found one command-line utility (however, I can't seem to find it now... ) that got some kind of error when trying to change it. Too bad that I didn't write down what exactly the error was. Efi strings... Well, trying to use them pretty much broke the whole deal. No qe/ci anymore, the screen became laggy. I can't figure what went wrong, i pretty much did it as the tutorial says. Using iAtkos v7 as my distribution with chameleon 2 rc1 as boot. I did not select Acpi kexts (due to their incompability with voodoo'd touchpad kexts), nor any smbios kexts. To tell the truth, i don't really know what they do. Although once i tried using one acpi kext (dunno what exactly, can't remember), and i remember it pretty much changed nothing. So, the question is, as I'm pretty vague on the matter due to my lack of knowledge- Nvidia gf 9200m gs. qe/ci, and brightness change. How to do this? How did you did this? PS: Admins, if it's in the wrong section, then I'm sorry.
