  1. You need to buy a CPU with the correct bus speed. 166MHz is more common, but check your system profiler before you buy.

    Those are classic symptoms of a failing power supply. It's full of failing capacitors which work better when they're warm. The good news is that it's not too hard to replace the power supply. There's a good supply of refurbished power supplies on ebay, but they're not cheap. I would avoid a "used, but tested good" power supply since it's a ticking time bomb unless it's had the old capacitors replaced.
  3. As a last ditch effort, I tried pulling the firmware chip and reprogramming it in an EPROM programmer using the file from the emergency firmware recovery CD. The contents of the firmware chip closely matched what was in the file although the file had a few small things missing (like the serial number, as you would expect). The computer's behavior is exactly the same, so I have to assume it's not caused by corrupted firmware. It was a long shot anyway. One piece of information to add is that if I only have CPU A installed, I get the CPUA FAIL light. If both CPUs, or only CPU B is installed, CPUB FAIL lights up. Apart from some damage to the case, it looks like new. The fans and heat sinks are spotless, so I'm guessing it was the victim of an unfortunate accident when it was new(zapped by static, power surge, someone dropped a screw in while it was running,...). Without knowing something about what was done to it, I don't know where else to look, so I guess it's a parts machine unless I find a cheap logic board.
  4. I bought an as-is original 2006 Mac Pro that I'm trying to get working. Unfortunately, I know nothing about its history. As found it was complete except for the RAM, video card, hard drive, and side cover. I bought a pair of 1GB Samsung 667MHz FB DDR2 DIMMs, and flashed a Radion HD3870 with Mac firmware. It turns on, but there is no turn on chime, and the sleep LED remains on, then after about 5 seconds, the CPU B fail LED turns on. I have tired swapping the CPUs, and running it with only one CPU in both the A and B sockets with no change. The sleep LED blinks if I turn it on with no RAM, so at least it can detect a RAM error. It doesn't appear to detect the keyboard and mouse, so I can't reset the pram, but I did remove the battery. I also tried it without the video card in case my flashed 3870 is causing problems, but there's still no chime. I even tried the firmware recovery procedure, but the sleep light just blinks rapidly when I hold the power button and it never opens the DVD dive. Everything is pointing to a bad logic board, but before I call it dead, is there anything else I'm missing? Does the Mac pro logic board have any known weaknesses or common failures?

  6. I have an old P4 system that I want to play with OSX on. Can anyone tell me which inexpensive AGP or PCI video cards are currently working, or are likely to work in the near future with OSX? Speed is not important. I want the cards video acceleration features to be supported (how ever basic they may be), I want to be able to change resolution, color depth and refresh rates from the control panel and play DVDs full screen. Price is my primary concern. I'd even be content with an old ATI Rage pro if it functioned the same way as the Rage cards in older PPC macs.
  7. I was just setting up an old G4 450 system for someone. It has the original Rage 128 video card and 10.4.3 installed. Core Image and QE are not supported, but all the video features like DVD playback, changing resolutions/refresh rate/color depth and full screen Itunes visualizations work. Why do these features work on a PPC mac without QE, but even with QE they don't work on an Intel mac? I assumed QE and the lack of these features were related, but they apparently aren't. Do we have to wait for the release version, or might they never work? If they never work, this will be a serious blow to using X on a generic machine. It would certainly make it unusable for me.
  8. So is this problem because I'm using a driver that wasn't specifically written for this card? I assume the dev machines let you change to any resolution, or refresh rate. Do any video cards other than the one built into the dev machines work properly yet? I figured not being able to change resolutions was caused by not having a driver for the video card. Thanks for the work around, but it's not exactly convenient. You also can't use full screen itunes visualization since it can't change resolutions on the fly. I guess I'll have to wait for proper drivers.
  9. I'm playing with 10.4.3 8f1111 on an SSE2 P4 system. I have an AGP ATI Radeon 9550 installed and working with the 9700 driver as discussed in another thread. Core Image and Quartz Extreme are both shown as supported in system info. I still can't change resolution, color depth, or refresh rate in the display control panel. What's causing this and is there a fix yet?
  10. Two problems on 8F1111

    I'm having the same problem on an non-SSE3 CPU on an Intel 845 board. I ran the auto internet connection setup and now the network works, but the network settings always quits. I tried both the on board LAN and an intel LAN card I had around. Other parts of the control panel work fine and I had itunes and safari running. The computer also crashes frequently. 10.4.1 ran fine on it without a single crash.
  11. Patching the ISO to skip the SSE3 check in a hex editor was easy, but I'm not having any luck patching Coregraphics. Is there an easy way to patch Coregraphics? I've read through the instructions at http://www.research.gwgaming.net/wiki/inde...x.php?title=GUI but I have no experience in running scripts. Is there a dummies guide anywhere? Has anyone written a tool for that which can be run in windows? Is the patched file available for download anywhere?
