Ati Radeon HD 5650 on Lion 10.7 with CI/QE

I'm still stuck after doing a complete new installation. The screen goes blank with the back light still on after DSMOS arrives, but it seems the computer has crashed by that stage as my wifi dongle (which I've set to connect on startup) doesn't flash and if I plug in a USB stick, it doesn't light up. No HDD activity either so its safe to say the computer crashes as soon as it tries to flick into the graphics. It boots up fine with the standard boot script and mach_kernel when there's no ATIConfig or GraphicsEnabler flags in the com.apple.Boot.plist. But of course doesn't pick the ATI card up when doing it this way. Can anyone else offer up any advice? Thanks

Ati Radeon HD 5650 on Lion 10.7 with CI/QE

Hi Atlee, I actually posted a lot of the below post in the Mammoth Method forum but thought its more on topic in here. I have a Dv6, probably quite similar to your one as we're both in Australia. I've been trying to get Lion installed over the weekend but am having issues with the ATI 5650 and your bootfile. It might be also due to having another OSX 10.6.8 partition on the drive too. My 2 partitions are Macintosh HD and OSX Repair. (in that order). I have SL working on the OSX Repair partition with Nawcom's Legacy Kernel for 10.6.8 and full QE/CI with the ATI 5650 using the Lion Kexts and Checco's modified boot file and SwitchresX. On the Macintosh HD partition I did a direct install of Lion 10.7.1 using Mald0n's method. I was able to get it to boot using Taptun's 10.7.1 kernel. I then tried to get the ATI 5650 working using this method: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...262286&st=0 Unfortunately it didn't work and the machine just boots into non QE/CI with 1024x768 resolution strangely. Almost like it ignored the ATI Card (no blank screen like when doing it on 10.6.8). The last thing I tried before calling it a weekend was using your modified boot file for HP Laptops a few posts up. The weird thing is that it booted into Lion with a blank screen, but it showed nothing on a secondary monitor and I think it had already KP'd by the time it called the windowing environment as nothing else seemed to do anything (caps lock etc.) . I tried using both Hoolock and Vervet framebuffers with no luck. In -v mode I did notice that as it was loading everything it said something along the lines of could not load something like ATI3000.kext (?). I then tried to reboot into my OSX Repair partition. I don't know how things are called from Chameleon, but I think it then decided to use your bootfile (which is in the root of the Macintosh HD partition) (Checcos is in the OSX Repair's partition) to boot into OSX Repair and started looking for 'mach_kernel' instead of the one it normally looks for (legacy_kernel). Maybe it tried reading the wrong org.chameleon.Boot.plist ? (I have no idea how this all works when you boot). It did sucessfully boot into 10.6.8 if I typed cpus=1. I was able to then use switchresX to get full graphics back on the 10.6.8 partition. When I checked system profiler, indeed, it had loaded all the correct ATI kexts and recognised the card as ATI 5650. So it seems your boot file did (accidently) work in Chameleon RC5 to boot into 10.6.8 but I still get the hung system/blank screen trying to boot to Lion. I have not done anything with EDID's as I have no other computer to get that information. I was planning on forcing it with SwitchResX in Lion as I did in SL. Do you think you can help me with some troubleshooting? Cheers mate,
  5. Hi Mald0n and everyone, I have used your method to install Lion 10.7.1 on my HP Dv6. I had to use Taptun's 10.7.1 chocolate kernel but managed to get it installed on my Macintosh HD partition.. (I have 2 partitions, Macintosh HD and OSX Repair). However, after installing chameleon to the drive and updating the /Extra with Mald0n's installer (which installed smbios.plist for my machine) I have lost the ability to use the mouse and keyboard, also there is no sound and I get a KP if I plug any USB sticks into any of the ports. This did not happen on first boot as everything (including the camera) worked before I used the Extra installer. (I was unable to generate a DSDT as the AutoPatcher had errors when extracting/patching so there is currently no DSDT anywhere). Any help would be greatly appreciated - Cheers
  6. Hi again folks. I just spent the weekend reinstalling everything from scratch but have some more problems /questions if you would be so kind to help; I have created 2 partitions, Macintosh HD and OSX Repair. I installed 10.6.3, updated to 10.6.8 on the OSX Repair partition using Nawcom's Legacy Kernel for 10.6.8 which worked OK. I was also able to get full QE/CI with the ATI 5650 using the Lion Kexts and Checco's modified boot file and SwitchresX. On the Macintosh HD partition I did a direct install of Lion 10.7.1 using Mald0n's method. I was able to get it to boot using Taptun's 10.7.1 kernel. However, after updating the /Extra with Mald0n's installer (which installed smbios.plist for my machine) I have lost the ability to use the mouse and keyboard, also there is no sound and I get a KP if I plug any USB sticks into any of the ports. This is problem #1 (I was unable to generate a DSDT as the AutoPatcher had errors when extracting/patching so there is currently no DSDT anywhere). This next issue might be best answered by Atlee if he sees this... I then tried to get the ATI 5650 working using this method: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...262286&st=0 Unfortunately it didn't work and the machine just boots into non QE/CI with 1024x768 resolution strangely. Almost like it ignored the boot file and didn't even try to pick up the ATI Card. The last thing I tried before calling it a weekend was I installed Atlee's modified boot file for HP Laptops running the ATI 5650. I found it on another thread here on insanelymac. The weird thing is that it booted into Lion with a blank screen, but it showed nothing on a secondary monitor and I think it had already KP'd by the time it called the windowing environment as nothing else seemed to do anything (caps lock etc.) . I tried using both Hoolock and Vervet with no luck. In -v mode I did notice that as it was loading everything it said something along the lines of could not load something or other ATI3000.kext (?). I then tried to reboot into my OSX Repair partition. I don't know how things are called from Chameleon, but I think it then decided to use Atlee's bootfile (as it is in the root of the Macintosh HD partition) to boot into OSX Repair and started looking for 'mach_kernel' instead of the one it normally looks for (legacy_kernel). Maybe it tried reading the wrong org.chameleon.Boot.plist ? It did boot up if I typed cpus=1 back into 10.6.8 and I was able to then use switchresX to get full graphics back on the 10.6.8 partition. When I checked system profiler, indeed, it had loaded all the correct ATI kexts. So it seems Atee's boot file did work in Chameleon RC5 to boot into 10.6.8 but I still get the hung system/blank screen trying to boot to Lion. If someone could explain to me what's going on and how to start troubleshooting it, that would be really great! Sorry for the super long post!
  7. Hi Maldon, What shall I use for an i7 720QM ? Thanks!
  8. Just putting it out there again.... Is there anyone here that can help me with going from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 with the dreaded ATI 5650 graphics card? Fellow aussie Atlee maybe? Anyone? Thank you!
  9. ATI 5650 & MAMMOTH METHOD: Hi everyone. I accidentally installed an update and stuffed my entire install of 10.6.7 A few months ago I got a (sort of) stable install doing the Nawcom bootUSB method and some Lion drivers, as I couldn't get Mammoth Method working with my ATI 5650 graphics card. I've tried for two days straight and can't get any install working with this gfx card since the accident. Has anyone here managed to get their DVx working with the Mammoth Method and the ATI 5650??? I have downloaded the 10.6.8 combo update and tried that with Taptun's kernel, with no luck as well as trying with the 10.6.7 kernel and update. Just want some advice on how to get this machine up and running if anyone can help? Thank You!
  10. I have made some progress with the DV6 and ATI 5650 graphics card. My main concern was getting the laptop screen working properly which I was close to giving up on after days of trying. This thread is what helped me get the graphics working with full QE/CI: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=250905 (no need to to a bios dump of your card, you can ignore that part) However I could not use this method with the Mammoth Method install as it would KP after installing 10.6.7 with the ATI kexts and modified boot script. I needed to use the Nawcom install method which Atlee used. Nawcom has a new kernel for 10.6.7 which I used along with his USB mod CD. I found them on his blog: http://blog.nawcom.com/ After installing the 10.6.7 combo update, along with the ATI kexts and Checco's boot script, the laptop would boot with an external monitor but the laptop screen remained backlit but black. Then once I installed SwitchResX and changed the resolution to 1366x768 the laptop screen turned on and is behaving nicely now booting on its own without an external monitor attached. Full QE/CI working. The system is now running pretty stable with no KP's however there are a few things that don't work... Currently not working. Priority issues: Sound is working but ignores the main volume control and stays at the same volume, even when muted. (Using voodoo kext I think) The two USB ports on the right hand side work perfectly, however the left USB and eSATA/USB port don't work Installed SleepEnabler kext but upon wakeup, screen remains blank. Webcam not working and doesn't show in system profiler Minor issues System profiler reports 1 CPU with 4 cores. Have heard that the i7's should be reported as having 8 cores on a mac? Changing screen brightness doesn't work. No idea if the compuer is speed-stepping or activating the burst feature of the i7 processor - Geekbench score was below 3000. Though the system is reported as an iMac.. Strange. I also tried booting with a patched DSDT for my machine but get a KP when I try this. It boots fine with the unpatched clean DSDT that I extracted before installing Snow Leopard, but doesn't seem to recognise any more hardware or perform any different to having no DSDT at all. If anyone can offer advice on the issues above it would be much appreciated! Cheers

  12. I dunno mate, Now that Mammoth isn't here much anymore I'm close on given up on figuring this out. I can't get anything to work with the ATI 5650 after installing the 10.6.7 combo update. Just get a jumbled screen or when trying to install the ATI kexts and updating the boot file I get a kernel panic. Not sure what to do. Gutted.
  13. Hi Atlee, I've been following your posts re the ATI 5650. I did my install using the mammoth method but have had no luck with getting anything on the screen apart from ugly patterns since updating to 10.6.7 Can you offer any advice on how to get the install working using the ATI kexts after a mammoth method install? Otherwise I'm ready to try your guide, but wondering if it will work with Mammoths modified tap tun kernel if I want to go from 10.6.3 straight to 10.6.7 as this tutorial is for 10.6.6 Any advice greatly appreciated Thanks
  14. Hi Alexandre, Did you find a solution to your problem? I have the exact same problem after updating from 6.3 to 6.7 - my screen looks just like your picture I think is must have something to do with the ATI graphics card - I have the same one Would love to find a solution. Atlee, anyone? Thanks
