  1. I know, i am like a bad penny. Right this problem has been on going for me for a year or maybe more. I have gone through frustation, anger and rage. I am running a Dell Inspiron 9300 with JaS 10.4.8. Everything works wonderfully. My network did not work but i copied the patch from 10.4.5 and now its fine. The problem i have it seems is common. My res is stuck at 1024 x 768 (i am using a mobility x300). I have tried the all in one package. Installed it then rebooted and there was no change to my display options in preferences. SO i tried Callisto 006. Now i am no wonder kid, i have a Mac Pro Dual Core, but it has never crashed so i do not know about kexts etc but i followed the instructions. The original Callisto plist file is below <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.free.driver.CallistoHAL</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>CallistoHAL</string> <key>IOMatchCategory</key> <string>IOService</string> <key>IOPCIMatch</key> <string>0x41501002&0xffffffff</string> Now my device id is 0x5460. So do i delete and replace 0x4150 and replace with 0x5460 and leave everything else or what. Also what difference is it between using Kovergs patch and not using it. I got lost when it said about sudo etc. It must be me because everyone else seems to overcome this problem and it leaves me feeling a bit of a winging old d*ick. I am hoping someone will be patient with me and get me through this. I am 50% almost all Mac now apart from this laptop and this one small problem is keeping me from the hallowed 100%. This whole forum has helped me alot believe it or not but the whole graphics thing is zapping my will to live. Sorry to be a real pain and keep going over my problems but i guess the solution is there and i am doing something obviously wrong. You help will be muchos exceptos. 2. OK. So you have a DELL Inspriron 9300. You want to install OSX86. Yeah it will work, sure. But you want the display nice and crisp. Then if thats the case then dont bother. I have been testing installation guides from the forum for several months, and unfortunatley none of them seem to work, not even Callisto. Look on the bright side. You have a widescreen laptop. Sell it, chuck in £300 of savings and go out and by a refurbished G4 laptop.

    Which one to choose

I am placing this post in the hope that since last time i posted a thread things have changed. Now i have a very nice Mac Pro Dual core that i use as my main tool. However i also have a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. To date over the last week or two i have tried 10.4.5, 10.4.8 and 10.4.9. Most of these work well......except and its a big issue with me, the bloody graphics. I am stuck on 1024 x 768 which on widescreen is passable but not sharp. Now i have tried Callisto (it did not work). My graphics card is a Radeon Mobility x300. Am i the only person that cannot fix this issue without tampering about with Kexts and terminal ( and still finding it doesn't work), its like going back to bloody DOS all over again. So does anyone know of a OSX86 bundle that they know works, especially with the x300 and on a Dell Inspiron 9300. I would settle for 10.4.5 if need be. I know i might sound a fussy bugger, but reading this forum there seems to be some bloody good tweekers out there. Yes i suppose i could go out and get a PowerMac G4 laptop for £500 but the whole point and i think the buzz is that this should not be possible according to Apple, which makes me even more fired up to get it working on my Dell laptop. Maybe i should offer a reward to someone who can get my Dell running as close as possible to a proper Mac. I mean graphics and network card would do. Please dont make me dig out my XP disc and return to the days of constant updates etc. Come on guys and dolls together we can crack it !

    Partitions

When setting up OSX86 i created a 2nd partition and installed OSX on it and all was fine. However during a boot up a few weeks later my windows system crashed and to get everything working again without loosing artwork, mp3's and photos i had to create a small 3rd partition which i installad a low level installation of xp on. I now need to delete this "active partition". I edited the boot ini file and restarted but i still get two options of windows xp on boot up and the boot ini file goes back to show 2 boot options. I have turned off system restore, gone into system and edited the boot ini file and gone through the msconfig route and edited but it keeps restoring to show dual booting options. I have deleted the folder in C:|WINDOWS where i place the new operating files so why is it still showing two installations. I have tried using Acronis but it wont do what i need. In my computer it only shows C:\ drive and not the partition that must be hidden inside it. Any ideas how to delete a 2nd XP installation??? Remember that the system files for the 2nd installation have been deleted by myself. I just need to delete the active partition and the boot log file. Paul.
  5. OK so i have gone from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6, all ok and good you say, however !!! When i was using 10.4.5 i could not change the resolution, even when using Callisto and from the help of some helpful people on this site. I have a an ATI x300 on an Inspriron 9300 widescreen. I am still having the problrm and it is really peeing me off now, the res is ok but not perfect (1024x768). Can someone offer me more advice on how to fix this problem along with getting my inbuilt sigmatel sound card to work and my sparadic ethernet card which works every now and then forcing me to use a usb connection a lot of the time. Below is the system info on my graphics card which is my biggest headache Display: Type: VGA-Compatible Controller Bus: PCI VRAM (Total): 128 MB Vendor: ATI (0x1002) Device ID: 0x5460 Revision ID: 0x0000 Kernel Extension Info: No Kext Loaded Displays: Display: Resolution: 1024 x 768 Depth: 32-bit Color Core Image: Not Supported Main Display: Yes Mirror: Off Online: Yes Quartz Extreme: Not Supported PLEASE HELP ME I AM GOING SLOWLY INSANE ! x
  6. Ok so a few of you might of read my previous posts in this forum regarding my ATI mobility graphics card and its refusal to work in high res, even when using Callisto, i got use to the screen since it was not that bad anyway and apart from an ethernet port that sometimes refuzed to work everything was kinda groovy and working. But me being me i decided to go from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6, so i got hold of the HoTiso version of 10.4.6 and followed the on screen instructions to upgrade instead of a clean install, all goes well until it reboots when i get the grey square with the stop logo in the middle which i guess means it aint worked, even if i go for the fresh install after formatting the partition it locks up at the same point, so i have had to go back to my 10.4.5 which aint too bad i guess. Does anyone know of a way to upgrade successfully, maybe using Pacifist to unpack my 10.4.6 dvd. Or ride bareback and do a standard apple update to see what happens, has anyone managed to use apple updates without completley screwing up their installation. For a solution to installing on Dual Boot then follow this guide, for a safe dual boot http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=11339
  7. Thanks for your help so far. I deleted the mkext and kextcache files, however i cannot delete the windowserver.plist or any of the com.apple.preference.displays or the other windowserver.plist cause they are not there to delete, which is either goo cause it saves me from having to delete them or bad cause they need to be there b4 deletion. SO anyway i reboot after that and get the message saying thatthe 2 kext files were not installed properlly.
  8. Argggggghhh!!! OK so i unzipped the files went into CallistoHAL.kext and opened ino.plist in texdt editor, found the line i need to change. Went into about "about this Mac, then more info and found the device id for my graphics card (ATI X300 Mobility). Then found the line i needed to change and replace the four digits with my own id number which is 5460). saved it and closed text editor. Then right clicked each kext file , went to get info , then at the bottom i set all the options to read and write (is that right or not). Then moved both Kext files to the extensions file and restarted my laptop. All booted up then i got a message saying they were not installed properly. If i try to do it in terminal i get about 3 commands in then blue sqwiggles appear down the left side of the terminal window and there is no more tetx for me to edit, if there was do i need to type in the whole set of about 128 values cause it says if using mobility then you should not. It appears that i am truely inapt or missing one hell of an error. If anyone has got a laptop working using OSX86 and an ATI X300 Mobility then maybe you could email me youmodified kext files or someone please just chuck me a bloody big lifeline or whats going on. info@paulmidcalf.com
  9. Can anyone tell me how i go about changing the permissions of a kext file to 755.
  10. Lastest update, installed Acronis OS selector and it sorted out all my problems, so i now have dual boot on my Inspiron 9300 laptop. Just changing the boot.ini does not always work if you have partitions you cannot just add one line, you also need to change a few lines above, i found this out the hard way. leaving the boot.ini file intact and just using Acronis OS selector does the stuff behind the scenes, it slows boot up time down to about 15 seconds but who cares, you still get dual boot. However i am now stuck with one setting for resolution. I have an ATI X300. I got hold of Callisto and read through the instructions. However i get stuck at the bit about root:wheel since i am a mostly a PC users, i only used my G4 for audio work so never rummaged about in the stuff behind the scenes, so i tried using the work through in terminal, however a few script entries in it says the folder Callisto folder is not present or something, this maybe due to me entering the wrong password, i just enter the one i registered with after installing OSX86. I need help with either the root:wheel bit and how to change or the terminal bit. Sorry for being a pc nerd, but my experience with OSX on goes as far as using the apps and not changing script etc. Also just modifying a line in the plist entry to a different resolution does not work, and i have tried a few of them. In the mean time i am gonna have a go with Macvidia. Any help is welcome i am so near to perfect OSX except for resolution.....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. OK, i have just has to format my hard drive again and have a fresh copy of XP, going to download Acronis and try it thats what i used the first time and it worked on the 6gb partition, then i tried to update OS X and it went {censored} up. The following times i used Partition magic and the 3 times never worked even though XP was installed and then OS X, it always said cannot locate boot drive.
  12. OK so i did have XP and OSX running on my Dell Inspiron 9300. I already had XP installed, i then created a new partition using Partition Magic 8, however i am unsure about setting the new partition to active or not. Some posts have said that in XP you do not have to set it to active. I changed the boot.ini file and checked boot paths and all was ok, i then saved it to the root of my C:\ drive and also placed chain0 there aswell and set them both to hidden incase of accidental deletion. I then restarted and booted of my dvd drive and ran OSX, went into Disk Utilities formated the the new drive using the MAC journal option and installed onto that drive, all loaded up and all was well, however when i restart and try to go into OSX i get a message saying missing hal.dll file or something about unable to boot from loaction or something. I did not get this the first time i attempted it, so why now. My only thought is that the new partition was set to "active". Obviously i cannot install i 2nd hard drive on my laptop, which drive should be set to primary or logical etc. All was going well............never update OSX....screws it up proper, find a patch for updating !!! Please help...anyone. I have read the threads about Dual Booting, i cant see anything that i have not already tried.

  14. Yeah i too am having trouble the same as you.I have an inspiron 9300 with 17inch widescreen with a Radeon x300, i installed osx86 10.4.5 on it eventually although the hitches were very minor. Eveything works ok, USB2, ethernet dvdrw etc. except i can not set my resolution to anything other than 1024x768. I know there have beeen several posts about this subject and i was wondering if anyone could relate to this problem and can provide us with a viable solution other than using command prompts, or atleast command prompts that work. we not jsut go into the boot.plist and enter the screen size we are after? What programme should we use to edit the script. etc. what does the x32 mean in the scripting? I tried altering the boot entry but did not work, how did you edit it, maybe i should try copying your lines into my boot file to see if it works.
