1. GA-P55A-UD3 + ML = ?

I'm not using Software Update. I open the AppStore.app and navigate to the Mountain Lion page. Then when I click on buy, it barfs. Looking thru their support pages it may be possible it doesn't like my 1Mbit/s link, Apple's servers can't manitain a connection for 8 hours?
2. Title says it. Gigabyte P55A-UD3 mobo, i5-760 2.8Ghz, 4GB Kingston DDR3-1333Mhz, Nvidia 8400GS, WDC WD3200AVJS-63B6A0 partitioned GPT, 60G Mint Linux, 200G Users, 60G MacOS 10.6.8, I've been using a naughty bootloader, with dsts, intending to move to MyHack. Snow Leopard went in fine first go, has run fine for years (?). I chucked Ubuntu off the *nix volume because I got tired of it breaking drivers at upgrades. I agreed with those who said Lion was Apple's Vista. Now I would like to try 10.8 on a separate volume, not a direct upgrade yet. But the Appstore tells me, We could not complete your purchase We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer. System profiler tells me I have a MacPro 3,1 I used Champlist to assign plausible bootrom and s/nr values, extract attached. I read somewhere that amongst the ML install requirement is a need for S/L/E/AppleSMC.kext version at least 4. My "real" version is 3.1.0d5, but I do have /Extra/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext v.4.2.0. Now looking too deep I get confused, see the SystemProfiler extract which says SMC Version(system): 1.25f4. Alrighty, do ioreg -l -w0 |grep SMC and the result is attached. The AppStore appears to d/l and run the installer Preflight check before letting you buy. Conveniently it leaves a copy at /Users/~/Library/Application Support/AppStore/<9figure-index>/preflight.pfpkg The "Distribution" xml script extracted is also attached here, zipped. Have I fallen off the edge of the upgrade cycle? Is there something simple stupid I've missed? SysProf_mp3.1.txt ioreg-l-w0|grepSMC.txt Distribution.zip
3. Realtek 8168/8111 solution

Does RTL8111E support Auto MDIX? I have GA P55A-UD3 mobo with this chip, and it's running fine with Lnx2mac's driver (cheers bro!), but, I've gotten so used to using modern real Mac 'puters which can be plugged back to back or to other devices without worrying about a hub or crossover cable, and this 8111 won't do that. Realtek have a "features" sheet http://www.realtek.com/products/productsVi...&ProdID=239 which it claims can slice. dice, and serve 37 flavors of hot and cold beverages, but it doesn't say outright "Yes it does AutoMDIX", unless it's a hidden feature in one of those IEEE specs. Or a feature that isn't activated (yet) by this driver?
4. [SOLVED] IDE DVD does not work

Thanks for that useful reply Gigabyte in their wisdom or otherwise have added PATA magic sauce, aka Marvel 9128 and a PATA header on the board, and a piece of ribbon in the box, so they have included control functions in the bios. Stories on this forum and my own experience show that the whole IDE/SATA/PATA chain is to some extent interdependent. I agree it should not be so much, but... Yes, I've done this and it became "visible" I've tried both of those now thanks. Both cause the drive to show up in System Profiler, with correct parameters for reading and burning. A DVD will show up ready to play in VLC, and a CD shows all the tracks in iTunes. But the instant I click the "Play" button the whole system freezes solid, and can be cleared only with a hard restart. Fortunately both of those kexts include the source. Unfortunately I am not a programmer, never even played one on TV. I'll get in touch with the authors to try and understand what to do next. Thanks again for helping my ailing Google-fu
5. Yes, I'm sorry, Yet Another Go Read the FAQ problem. But it seems like this is another of those "loose edge" problems with osx86 that everybody's setup gives them a slightly different problem/solution. GA P55A-UD3; i5-760; 4G(2+2) Kingston 99U5471-001.A00LF; WD3200AVJS boot drive partitioned for MacOS + Ubuntu + a shared partition for a common Home dir and Developer builds; ST31000528AS for media storage; TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223F el cheapo SATA optical drive; Install was via a MyHack USB stick, updated with Tonymac's ##### DSDT ~$ uname -a Darwin snospider 10.6.0 Darwin Kernel Version 10.6.0: Wed Nov 10 18:11:58 PST 2010; root:xnu-1504.9.26~3/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64 Now the fun starts. I have a couple of low mileage Pioneer PIO-DVR-112D. These are not Apple Branded, but are the same model used by Apple in G4 & G5 PowerMacs. They came out of my beloved MDD G4 (dead psu), and I thought one at least could carry on the good work. It opens, and shuts, and spins up a DVD to read the index, but is not visible to the system. Setting BIOS is truly a Black Art. I've swapped the SATA drive plugs around on the array of six sockets on the board, and what means Channel (n) Master/Slave escapes my meagre logic. Except that the IDE DVD always sits on Channel 4, and its Master/Slave status changes with the positions of the SATA plugs, yes its jumper is set to Cable Select. I have set PHC SATA Control Mode = AHCI because the default setting of IDE stops the boot process midway. GSATA Controller = Enabled GSATA Ctrl Mode = IDE At Startup the IDE drive is detected by BIOS but according to the collected wisdom I also need to load a valid kext/driver. I've tried several versions of JMicron, but there are different JMicron36(x) ATA/SATA/eSATA to which we are then invited to add our device ID. Tonymac's ##### optional JMicron install does not work for me. Likewise the version of AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext loaded by S/L/E/IOATAFAmily.kext does not load, so I assume the device is not found by ioreg's probe. There are several comments about that AppleVIAATA.kext is too old and should not be trusted. But: ~$ lspci -nn 00:1f.2 SATA controller [0106]: Intel Corporation Ibex Peak 6 port SATA AHCI Controller [8086:3b22] (rev 06) 02:00.0 IDE interface [0101]: Unknown device [1b4b:91a3] (rev 11) 04:05.0 IDE interface [0101]: Integrated Technology Express, Inc. IT8213 IDE Controller [1283:8213] Only one of the kexts I tried had anything approaching those device IDs in its Info.plist strings. ~$ less /Extra/Extensions/AppleVIAATA.kext/Contents/Info.plist ... <key>IOKitPersonalities</key> <dict> ... <key>ITE IT8213 PATA Controller</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.driver.AppleVIAATA</string> <key>Hardware Name</key> <string>IT8213 PATA</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>AppleVIAATARoot</string> <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0x82131283</string> <key>IOProbeScore</key> <string>1500</string> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOPCIDevice</string> <key>Serial ATA</key> <false/> </dict> ... And, no, it doesn't work. I've been power using Macs for 24 years, but my knowledge of PCs hard or soft is little more than looking at the outside of the box. So, any advice pls? Sorry, "Go buy a SATA DVD" is not a valid reply __________________________________________________ EDIT Not an elegant solution, but a (mostly) practical one: Purchased an IDE <-> SATA converter card for $7. It hangs on the IDE ribbon, with a sata ribbon on the other side, plus needs a power cable, so there's a mess of extra cables. But now my Hackintosh thinks the IDE dvd is a SATA dvd, and it's all working to full spec.
6. FIXED (for me) Bonjour, aka. mDNSResponder, Apple's Magic Genie that replaces all the functions of AppleTalk and resolv.conf and who knows what else. Safari and similar high level apps assume that if mDNS is not available there is no network. How to tell if mDNSResponder is working? Utilities/Activity Monitor, or in the Terminal, top, or ps -awx How to tell if it tried to start and failed? tail /var/log/system.log or tail /var/log/kernel.log How to tell what is keeping it off? /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist How to turn it on and keep it on? sudo launchctl -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist. I dunno what turned it off, and now I don't care
7. Did you ever get this fixed? six months ago.... I've got a similar problem: GA P55A-UD3 with RTL8111E ethernet. Using Lnx2's kext/driver I had it working OK. I use an Apple Magic Mouse via an el cheapo usb plugin. Then I switched on AFP, Apple File Sharing over TCP. Could not get it to work, in or out, to or from another real Mac I've got. At this point I saw the internet was gone. Network Utility showed that the IPnr from my ISP had been assigned to the Blutooth DUN. So I pulled the dongle, flushed all Blutooth and internet settings and caches, rebooted, still no go. I'm using PPPoE, it connects to my ISP. tcpdump shows normal negotiation and packet exchange, and bad guys probing my ports I can open a Terminal window and ping or traceroute right across the planet, but there is no connection between this transport layer and the application layer on the stack. Mail.app just sits there dumb, Safari & Firefox quick as a wink say "You are not connected to the Internet". I have a spare PCI card here, RTL8169, plugged that in, AppleRTL8169 loaded automatically, but still same story. There's nothing wrong with the chips, both nics work 100% when I reboot into my alternative Ubuntu 10.04
8. Use Pacifist to get them from your installer DVD .
9. Asus USB-N13 partly working on P5K-CM vanilla 10.6.5 + myHack bootloader This USB stick wifi adapter says on the box "Turns your PC into a Wireless Router" and the CD contains drivers for Win XP, 7, Linux, and MacOS-X. Just the thing for setting up an ad hoc network? Not for me. First the drivers on the disk are 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 The Ralink site has at 3 December 2010 a 10.6 driver RTUSB D2870- UI- which installs the Ralink Wireless Utility.app and S/L/E/RT2870USBWirelessDriver.kext (plenty of network instructions for Windows, not much for Mac, and all screenshots are 10.4) After reboot open SystemPreferences/Network and be notified "A new Interface has been found" I chose to leave this as "configure by DHCP", altho' manual config didn't help much. NB the interface type is "802.11 n WLAN", not "Airport", this is significant: I am not offered the option to "Show Airport status in menu bar"; I don't get any of the airport network creation or joining options from SystemPreferences; all of the setup and network choices are done from the RalinkWirelessUtility, but I must have the USB stick plugged in at boot time for it to be recognised. I can setup an ad hoc network on my laptop (Asus eee 1008H HackOS 10.6.4 Atheros9285) and the N13 will join this, I can watch movies from my big media HD shared to the netbook, but I cannot get an internet connection to the netbook from my ADSL, which was the point of the exercise, and why I put "partly" in the first line. Just sayin' ;-)
10. 10.6.4 native support LoL

Asus P5KPL-CM similar specs to yours, running fine on 10.6.3, I've just updated to 10.6.4 with MyHack 1.1 Everything seems to be running fine - except my PPPOE If I can't find a fix I'll have to downgrade from backup...
11. FIXED The AttansicL1ekext20090418 d/l'd from the top of this article zipped on 23/04/09 2:23am 42,293 bytes MD5 d76515b55a3018524e2641f7713a5fc8 Does not work for me 10.6.0, 10.6.1 Does work 10.6.2 Tip (but you knew this already ;-) after running the 10.6.2 updater: Do Not Restart (Re)Install MyHack 1.0 or later, or latest version of your favorite bootloader if 10.6.2 warranted then restart.
12. ooops, 800 milliseconds after clicking I realized I should have said SL 10.6.0 More curiosity: I am running 10.5.8 on a genuine Mac G4 as a NAT box for the home network. Linux, WinXP, via enet, and a Hackintosh netbook via WiFi can all get out to the internet, but not the Asus P5K. I have a shared volume on the NAT box, via afp and smb. If I attempt to connect to this from the P5K as a registered user I get eternal wheelspin and have to Force-Quit Finder to restore sanity. If I click [browse] (uses Bonjour...) the shared volume is immediately shown, I select it and connect as guest, everything just works - go figure.
13. Asus P5KPL-CM Core2Duo lspci -vv 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0) [snip] Capabilities: [100] #1969 Capabilities: [102] #1026 I have possibly some light on the people who get a card apparently all alive, but no internet. That is my situation too, except I have observed using tcpdump that the DNS replies to this machine seem slightly different to what I get on my genuine Mac G4. What's more with the Asus I can happily surf the web -if- I supply IP nr addresses needing no DNS lookups. Maybe the chip/driver is not sending/receiving udp packets correctly? More: I have Ubuntu 9.10 on this same box and it works sweet as thru the same enet port. So, how much detailed logs & dumps would you gurus like, and where should I send/post?
14. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=138351 works for some people, not for others. Some ppl have swapped out the card for a Dell 1390, again results are not consistent enough to say do it; Some ppl are using Dell 1490 or Broadcomm94311 cards and none of them report failures. Just a personal observation, but I see those with most headaches are those with the orneriest jungle mix installs. Vanilla installs may not do all the functions like speedstep, but they seem to have less hangs and crashes, and 10.5.6 is worth it. Just my 2c.
15. You could do it the hard way mindful that Startup (Shutdown) Items are deprecated and will be discontinued Real Soon Now . Since the shell script can't play a sound on its own you have to cobble up an AppleScript to play the sound. Also these scripts run as root so you are stuck with root's sound settings... Or you could do it the easy way, which I found right here on Insanelymac. Let the sound sleep, then play a movie to time the wakeup of sound. I make it around 2.5 seconds. This is the minimum length of sound to play. The maximum sound length must be less than 10 seconds, or shutdown will timeout.
