    Asus 1201N Installation and support

I suggest starting a new topic for 10.9 installation beginning with a guide.

Initial battery test has about seven hours battery life, but that is very preliminary. I won't really test until tomorrow. ------ Follow up gives me more like four and a half hours.

Okay, that was the same thing i tried first, before giving in to Trim Enabler. I got as far as step two and got an error regarding the ".{9}" in the command. As for the erasing, Trim Enabler asked the user to go into Disk Utility and manually erase the free space on the drive, rather then the OS taking care of it in the background. But "Erase Free Space" is greyed out for me in DU.

The way i am looking at indexing and caching is one wants to keep the read/writes of an SSD to a minimum, because the SSD wears out over time, and both these things would be doing both those things. So i am deeply considering moving the SSD to my desktop where i will have better control over it and i will be better utilizing it's characteristics. I am just facing the fact that the 1201's Atom is just too oomphless to see major performance gains with an SSD. Do not get me wrong, things did get better and faster when i first installed it a day and a half ago, and i have yet to test battery performance, which could easily swing things back in favor of the 1201.

Nope - the way i understand it, and i am super new to playing on SSD, is fragging occurs on an HDD because its all radial. Defragging optimizes the drive from the perspective of spinning. SSD OTOH is, well it doesn't spin, so it doesn't matter if a bit of file is near the center of the disc and another bit of the same file is on the rim because its all a relatively equidistant matrix. Its like RAM. My biggest concern for my precious SSD (wich will be just another piece of tech lying around in five years) is if i cannot properly get Trim working, it will slowly die. To counter act this i have come up with the scheme of cloning this current install with CCC, putting it onto a normal HDD, wiping the SSD and installing Windows on it, enable Trim in that environment, clean it up, wipe it again, then reclone the OSX install back onto it. Not much more trouble than anything else we do!

Pardon me if i am in the middle of a sub-topic. Just got mine up on Lion last night after a quick perusal of the beginning of this forum. So now here i am reading the entire thing, but half way through the reading i find i have to get in and post a little. Some folk seem to have had trouble just getting the prepared USB to boot. I did too. I immediately and simply stuck into another slot a stick i knew to be bootable that i used for installing Lion onto my desktop. I let the stick boot, but selected my 1201 installer stick to actually boot. Magic. As i am still only halfway through reading the threads, perhaps i will read my answer soon, but i have another problem besides my afore stated Trim support question (BTW, Sys Profiler says trim is on but i am wary because i have read that Trim Enabler is a sham.) Early on in this thread MAS was an issue. I tried the two stated solutions but no joy for me. And sleep in 64 would be another thing. Otherwise all is very well with Lion and my 1201N. Onward reading. (Half hour goes by) Okie dokey - sleepenabler kext worked like a charm (64mode.) Lid, Fn, and Menu sleep all work and resume without a hitch. MAS and Trim.

What method did you use to enable trim? I ask because i used Trim Enabler but i cannot erase me free space. I can only hope and assume it is Trim-ming in the backgound.

I too have a desire to 10.6.8-ize my machine, but as has been pointed out the main new feature this update brings to the platform is to make it Lion ready. May i recommend, as i will be doing this myself, to wait for 10.7 to bust out and let some dust settle. Happy emoticon.

2o2- Sometimes, maybe one in ten boot ups, mine will only load three quarters of a gig of RAM. Since i only reboot on the weekends this is fairly infrequent, but it was rather annoying before i realized what was going on. So now whenever i boot up, i open Activity Monitor App and check to see how much memory is loaded. If it is 768 MBs, i reboot until i see the good old 3.25 GBs. Is not a perfect solution, but for me the best time to reboot is when i have just booted up anyways. HTH

Those are big big rips. I compress mine more not just for smooth playback on ion, but for smooth streaming throughout our household's wireless network.

Indeed it will, to either laptop screen or ext. display. However, it is not smooth if the file size is too large or if you are doing something else at the same time. I try to keep the movie rips to a gig and a half or two gigs.

the iobluetoothfamily should be the one that enabled the on/off. remove that one.

This happened to me as soon as i saw the 10.6.5 sleepenabler kext and tried it, and i did a little freaking out. What worked for me was i swapped the hard drive (it was not possible to boot from a usb source) with one that had a working install on it, plugged in the 10.6.5 drive externally through usb, dug into the extension folder and removed the offending sleepenabler kext. Replaced original drive and all was fine. Working with this machine i have always had a spare drive with a good install lying around. Some folk have an install on an SD card for this kind of emergency work, but i am not sure that would have worked since nothing USB related was booting in this emergency.

confirmed 10.6.5 working by: removing sleepenabler kext, run kext utility, update to 10.6.5, restart, reinstall applehda kext While i am here, just wanted to say i have lost my trackpad. This coincided with applehda cracking a month and a half or so ago. Sometimes the keyboard is lost too but it is the trackpad which is consistently out. I have a bluetooth mouse which i always use, even on the go, so it is not a critical situation for me, but is sad. The last two times i tried reinstalling, to see if a fresh install would fix things, the installer would not let me out of the gate unless i plugged in a mouse. Could it be as simple as a bad ribbon cable? Reseating it did nothing.

If your concern is to have the menubar and dock on the larger monitor, there is an app called secondbar which will replicate the menubar's main functions on the external monitor. The developer says he's working to make it fully functional, i think currently menubar icons aren't accesible. To move the dock, hold shift and click and hold the cursor on the dock's size adjustment bars then drag the dock to where you want it.

Do not be alarmed, rather be a little proud, that the system profiler shows a core 2 solo instead of atom for the processor! As was stated earlier in the thread, somewhere, the atom IS a core proc. Apple dropped support for the atom a couple of OS updates ago, and this is a reflection of the workaround. By the way, anyone getting blue flashy screen as if detecting displays? It has settled down some for me but is still happening...

I am now gone loco. I reinstalled today but my screen still flashes blue as if it were detecting displays. It is much worse when i have a secondary display up, yet it still will flash under any kind of load. Could my Ion chip be dying? Is there any recourse? Does any one else have this issue since the last round of audio updates? Is my computer dying after only nine months? Doesn't that seem unusual? Since the problem persists after a reinstall, i get the feeling it is a hardware issue, though there is the possibility that there is some conflict with one of the new kexts.

Good day, Has anyone encountered this problem, and found a way to deal with it?: My screen will maddeningly flash blue as if it were detecting displays, three times a minute when its bad. I have discovered it mainly does this when i am running google Chrome. I am on Firefox now and the problem is not as bad, but not by much. It just started happening this morning and i am this close to doing a reinstall as soon as i finish my backups. I ought to reinstall anyways considering the audio updates. Anywho, i am being driven crazy, help?!?

right, i would not want to brick it. i understand the risk as i have viewed the procedure, thus the complexity of the task, but the rewards seem worth it, so, as a middling level mac hacker, i will report back as to my results so as to inspire or discourage others from this endeavor as soon as i can attempt it. Thank you for your positive response..

So, is it true that rebranding my Dell wifi card will bump up it's capabilities? There seems to be two countervailing points of view. Moss says its purely cosmetic, but then there are also reports of much improved n throughput as well. I will gladly give it a try if someone says yeah its awesome and totally worth it

Okie doky, got it to work. Seems just as loud as the voodoo was, and it is sad to not have the mike working, but i do have a usb mike so i can get around that as long as i'm not on the go. I guess all i had to do was try harder: i removed the asushotkey kext, i missed being able to turn off the lcd. I also removed the bluetooth kext, it seemed all it was good for was turning off bluetooth, however i always use bluetooth with the mighty mouse my friend gave me. I removed it because when i tried sleeping now, the bluetooth was broken on wakeup. For me the super payoff is a near perfect sleep function, about 8 seconds down, one second back up! Moss: my audio id is 12 as well, that's before and after the audio kext change

Have reverted back to voodooHDA, wondering if appleHDA isn't working for me because of a conflict with the modified bluetooth kext or the asushotkey kext?

isn't working for me i removed voodoohda, ran kext utility, rebooted installed two new kexets with kext utility, swapped dsdt files rebooted - grey volume icon, no sources for input in system preferences are there any other kexts i need to remove?
