  1. HD3870 on 10.6

I was not able to get the card working at all. I tried a number of different things, from installing the 3800 series drivers I found on here from Leopard, to trying a number of EFI strings found from the Extended EFI Studio. Nothing would work. I eventually gave up and bought a GeForce 9800GT. Had SL installed in minutes. AND I find things much faster than with my HD3870. A7
  2. Hi all, I finally managed to get Snow Leopard working on my Hack. All my initial install problems had to do with my video card (ATI 3870). As soon as I popped in a GeForce 9800GT, the install completed fine. So I'm now up and running, with only a few minor glitches. It looks like I can boot in 64-bit AND 32-bit modes, with no major issues. However, if I boot in 64-bit, my airport card is not detected and does not work. It is a D-Link DWA-556. I don't have any kexts for it... in Leopard (or in 32-bit mode) it just gets detected as an Airport card and works out of the box. Any ideas why it is missing in 64-bit mode? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get it working? And as a last resort, does anyone have any recommendations on a wireless N card that works better in Snow Leopard in 64-bit? Thanks!
  3. I've been trying to get a SL install working for the past 48 hours on my Asus P5E (no other letters... just P5E). I just cannot get it to boot after installing. It installs fine, I follow all the steps in the guides out there (tried about 6 different ones so far, all fairly similar). Then I reboot, boot into SL with -x32 -v (64bit causes kernel panic) and it starts to load... then stops at acpi_smc_platformplugin with a "timed out" message and goes nowhere. I've tried every combination of DSDT, fakesmc and dsmos there is... it just won't go. So... I'm guessing my motherboard is having compatibility issues. I wouldn't mind getting a new board if it means a working SL install, but I do have specific requirements as this is a video editing rig. What I need in a MB: - 4 (or more) working SATA ports - at least 2 Firewire ports - 4 memory banks for DDR2 SDram - Support for Q9300 (2.5Ghz Core2Quad) CPU Any suggestions? Thanks.
  4. A Simple Guide to the 4830/4850/4870/4870x2/4890

As soon as someone gets a card working with dual-DVI displays, please post a reply in here! I'm dying to upgrade my X1900XT to something more powerful for my Motion work, but I need it to support dual monitor. The 4870 would be perfect for me. A7
  5. Kernel Panic over 3.5GB Memory Usage

I got fed up with this issue, so I did some digging and found that the Asus P5E (X38) board had 6 working SATA ports. As far as I know, it has the ICH9-R chipset, but I now have 4 SATA devices working AND 4GB of ram running with no problems. The board may be a little pricey, but it's a great motherboard and works amazingly well with OSX. I'm happy I made the switch. A7
  6. Kernel Panic over 3.5GB Memory Usage

I would also love to have this issue fixed. I have this issue on my Gigabyte DS3L with 4GB (2x2GB) ram. I can also add that AHCI is the cause of the problem. When I first installed the Kalyway DVD I only had 2 SATA devices, and AHCI was enabled. Everything ran perfectly... no panics. Then I added my 2 extra drives (so I now have 4 SATA devices) and found that I couldn't get the other two to work. I finally found a workround by reading another post on this forum that suggested disabling AHCI. It worked! I now have all 4 SATA channels working BUT I started getting kernel panics! Then I found this thread and tried the maxmem fix... that solved the kernel panics, but now I'm limiting my ram. So my options are: - use 1 hard drive and 4+ GB of ram OR - use 3 hard drives and only 3 GB of ram Since I do HD video editing, I really do need BOTH the 4+ GB of ram AND all my hard drives. Any help with this would be appreciated. NOTE: If anyone can absolutely confirm 100% a specific motherboard that will allow me to use my Q6600 CPU with 4 (or more!) SATA channels AND over 4GB of ram (and of course all the other stuff, like audio, LAN, USB, etc working), I would love to know. This is such an issue for me I would consider upgrading the MB. Alternatively, if anyone knows of an add-on PCI card that could give me the extra SATA channels with my 4+GB of ram, let me know as well. Thanks! A7
