  2. [Guide] Dell Latitude D630/D830

    I also have a Dell mini 10v running SL and this was suggested there, taken from the Lenovo site. Its helped me boot much more consistantly: The fix is to add; <key>UHCIreset</key> <string>Yes</string> into /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist. the file could also be at root ( /com.apple.Boot.plist ) depending on how you have the bootloader setup.
  3. I have the Dell 1397 (I think that's the right number, its the 'standard' Dell b/g card). You can also add an Apple Airport N if you want b/g/n or the Dell 1505 (make sure you get full size vs half size card). The Dell 1505 apparently runs rather warm and the Airport card seems to run even warmer. The Dell cards use the Broadcom chipset so your hackintosh will see them as an airport card (depending on model) with b/g/(n) and so everything will just work with them. That's nice. Being able to get 2 connections for a b/g network in Windows if you dual boot is a nice added bonus. Doesn't seem to double the bandwidth for me, but does make a noticable speed difference for the occasional use I need Win for.
  4. I see you have the D630, so I don't know if this advice applies since I have the D830, but I think the machines are equal other than screen size. If you don't have a WWAN card in your laptop you can add the Dell Wifi card in the WWAN slot instead of replacing the Intel card (you just use the WWAN antennas already there). That way when booted into OS X it'll use the Dell card but when you're booted in Windows both cards can be used to provide a bit of extra bandwidth. That's how I have my D830 setup. The only 'trick' to do this is the need to go into the BIOS and make sure the Wifi switch will turn on and off both the Wifi (original Intel) and WWAN (replacement Dell card) slots. That's assuming you use the switch currently to run Wifi on and off
  5. Yes NVKush, you can find a posting of mine listing the magic NVCAP string that enables the dock to have VGA output somewhere way back in this thread (about a year ago). I've never found one that got the DVI out to work, I'm sure that would make the screen look even better. I haven't tried the suggestions at the top of the current page here (the ones to remove a set of trailing zeros), they might get DVI working, I'm just not sure I want to deal with all the restarts and single user mode when it doesn't work
  6. I don't think this is really what you want, but here's my desktop on my 22" LCD monitor. I pretty much just use my laptop docked. I'm guessing you really want to see the 15.4" screen shot but if not, here you go. This is with a 10.5.5 install from over a year ago. I don't even remember which disk I started from, Kalaway 10.5.0 I believe.
  7. For those who don't know, one of the features of the Dell Latitude series are d/Docks. Dell makes 2 difference models, 1 is basically a port replicator but it adds an additional video port (DVI) allowing the docked laptop to display on 2 different external displays, 1 VGA and 1 DVI. They also make a fancier d/Dock which has its own power supply and can accept a half length PCI card for those situations (mostly for businesses, since the Latitude is Dell's business line) where some special purpose card is necessary to run a particular program. This dock also has the 2 video ports, 1 VGA and 1 DVI. So with either you can have a monitor connected to either the VGA port or the DVI port or 2 monitors, 1 to each port. My I just dock my laptop, so that when I pick it up to leave the keyboard and speakers and other goodies are plugged into the USB and speaker ports on the dock so the laptop is uncluttered. I also use a 22" monitor when I'm docked instead of the laptop display. But in OS X my hackintosh will only connect to the VGA port, not the DVI port. But in Windows XP and Vista I can connect to the DVI port and then even add a 2nd monitor to the VGA port if I wish. All I want to myself for OS X is to connect the monitor to the DVI port.
  8. I posted pages and pages ago asking for help getting DVI to work while docked. I can't even get that to work so I haven't even tried to go for dual external monitors. I tried all sorts of values for that magic value for the nVidia drivers and nothing worked better than the default value supplied by nvKush. That at least allows for VGA out while docked. Trouble is I use DVI while docked when in Windows but luckily my monitor has both a VGA and DVI input so I just attach both. Then when I'm in OS X I use the VGA connection and when in Windows use the DVI connection. Just wish I could get Windows to default to the DVI connection so that I didn't have to manually change from VGA to DVI each time I start in Windows.
  9. Out of curiosity, since I have the nVidia graphics so doubt I'll ever see sleep or restart or shutdown working, what time factor does having the ethernet port active add to the sleep cycle? As far as a fix, I doubt you'll see one. Time Machine makes a hash or somesuch out of the info it finds for the en0 port and without it can't make the hash so won't do a backup.
  10. I know for firewire the suggestion was to replace the seatbelt.kext from 10.5.5 and I thought I remembered seeing a mention of disc images being fixed by the same kext. Sorry that isn't more help, I've not updated to 10.5.6 myself yet, still on 10.5.5. Of course if you never had 10.5.5 installed or didn't save the kext's you're stuck and this fix won't help. Another option if you have Toast installed, use it to mount the disc image instead of just double clicking and having the system mount the image;)
  11. Suggestion here, tell people that they should *not* install the clamshell sleep kext if they have the nVidia graphics option. Since sleep is broken due to any (NVkush, NVinject, NVetc) of the nVidia support having your hackintosh attempt to sleep when the lid is closed will put it into a dead state requiring holding the power button to shut off then restart. Figured while I was posting… Has anyone gotten the DVI output to work while docked? If so, what magic did you use to make this happen? By the same token, while docked, is there a way to have the OS realize the laptop is closed and so the internal display isn't visible? For now I've arranged my desktop with the laptop screen above my external display and just do my best not to send the mouse above the menubar on the external display. Not a particularly ideal solution. I was hoping the clamshell kext would do the trick, being smart enough to not attempt to sleep the laptop if it was started while the lid was closed (but would disable the display) but it doesn't. Instead it always puts the laptop into sleep, hence my previous post about the warning for nVidia graphics users to not install. I learned the hard way a few months ago
  12. Real quick answer NVkush. Longer answer: search through this thread for info on using NVkush and the values of NVCAP to allow for an external VGA display. So far I've never seen a posting that manged to make the external DVI port on any of the dell dock products (dDock, dPort) work.
  13. You've got it right. With the kext the speed of your CPU will try to stay at the slowest (800) speed. It will dynamically change as your machine needs to do more things. That's when you'll see the number change. Since that new kext is always dynamically updating the speed of your CPU when you change the speed via the menu bar GUI it will change but then immediately be dynamically updated via the kext so it'll be back to 800 before the GUI could change to tell you that the speed went up. But if you're just sitting there looking at your laptop you don't need the CPU to be doing much so the 800 speed is just fine. The CPU chip will be using less power and generating less heat. The fan should never come on once you've got the kext installed and you're just sitting on the Mac OS X desktop. But if you haven't installed the kext the CPU will always be running at 100% full speed (just like you guessed). The CPU chip will get warm and even if you're just sitting at the desktop you will hear the fan turn on. This is hard on all of the components inside your laptop not just the CPU. I'd recommend everyone who actually is spending any time using their hackintosh in Mac OS X install this kext to keep from killing your laptop. OTOH if you're just playing with OS X once in awhile then there isn't nearly as much risk and its not necessary.
  14. Don't feel bad, this one threw me for quite awhile too. *the vanilla kernel* isn't anything special. It is the kernel as it came from Apple without any changes to it, such as modifying it to support speedstep on a particular type of machine or to support some sort of BIOS feature that the real Mac OS X never was intended too. A kernel that's plain, so plain it's vanilla (get it?). So basically the vanilla kernel is the one from apple, don't choose any special kernels when you do your install and you get "the vanilla kernel." One of the flavors of the installers out there also has the option to explicitly specify that the vanilla kernel (vs any other kind) is to be run when booting off the DVD. You would use the "vanilla" option (note there is no "-" like there are with boot flags) to boot that way. Perhaps its the Kaloway (sp?) For AHCI, I know there is a thread in the Dell support forums on how to add/install the drivers to a XP installation, I know I did it. Go to Dell Support Forum main page and in the search field right at the top of their page search for "AHCI/ATA" and you find a reference to a link called AHCI/ATA Confusion. Just go there follow, its simple. Basically you will install the Intel Matrix manager then the AHCI driver then reboot and change your BIOS.
  15. Simple one first, 3: If your video is the NVidia chipset (either 135M or 140M) then the kext which support that break shutdown. It is normal to have to use the power button to completely turn your laptop off. Once the screen has gone blank as part of the shutdown procedure all disc access has been completed so you can safely turn off your laptop and not have any issues. Many if not all of the different patches to get the soundchip working affect the shutdown/restart operation also. Bottom line, choose shutdown and wait for the black screen then force your laptop to completely shut off by pressing and holding the power button. The more complicated one is 1: As you've got your machine, if you basically have just done an install and upgrade to 10.5.5, it will always operate with the CPU at 100% speed and voltage. That means the CPU will get warm and the fan will come on. A few pages back someone mentioned a kext that can be used to reduce the speed of the CPU [throttle] without using a speedstep kernel, that is run the CPU at slower than 100% speeds to help it keep cool. I've installed that and I've had good luck with how it works. It definately keeps my machine cooler. There are also speedstep kernals which help reduce the voltage to the CPU to keep it running slower and cooler also. This seems to be a more experimental setup but there are folks here in this thread who've mentioned getting some sort of speedstep kernel working.
