  1. HDD swap: wrong capacity reported

  2. I replaced the anemic 40gb HDD with a WD Scorpio Blue 160gb IDE drive. The AppleTV is reporting the new drive as 40gb! Below is the process I used. Step 1: Create Drive Image I started by removing the 40gb Hitachi HDD drive and attached it to my MacBook Pro with an IDE-USB adapter. The drive was recongnized and auto-mounted. I fired up a terminal window and created an image file: dd if=/dev/disk1 of=/Users/vinlar/Desktop/AppleTV-drive.img bs=1024k Yes, /dev/disk1 was the AppleTV drive. :censored2: Step 2: Write Drive Image I connected my new 160gb HDD via the same IDE-USB adapter. It was recognized as an empty 160gb drive. I fired up terminal again and wrote the image file onto the new drive as follows: dd if=/Users/vinlar/Desktop/AppleTV-drive.img of=/dev/disk1 bs=1024k Step 3: Install New Drive I installed the new drive into the AppleTV, reconnected cables (video, ethernet & power) and booted her up. It had all of the content from my prior 40gb unit and was reported as 40gb. Step 4: Factory Restore & Software Update I did a Factory Restore on the unit and it was still reporting itself as a 40gb unit. I then navigated through the menu and directed it to update to the latest version of AppleTV software. It's still showing up as 40gb! Any advice? Did I miss a step somewhere? Should I remove the drive and attempt to resize the partition using diskutil?
  3. I have successfully installed SL on my Asus P5B, but my ethernet driver (skge.kext) in the /Extra/Extensions folder isn't loading unless I boot with the -f flag. Any tips on how to fix this? Thanks!
  4. I had the same problem on my desktop PC when I switched over to Leopard Retail. Thankfully I was able to add in a cheap firewire 400/800 PCI-E card and all is well now. I hope that someone responds with the answer here.
  5. +1 I would also use an updated EFI-Boot-i386 script with Chameleon RC2, but I'm quite content with the current version based on RC1. Could we just replace the boot, boot0 and boot1h files with those from RC2?
  6. Mac Mini $349 in store at micro center

    I saw this deal on slickdeals and picked one up for my kids. I personally think a $350 Core 2 Duo Mac that runs Leopard and will run Snow Leopard is a good deal. Just be mindful that it has a built-in DVD-ROM / CD-RW (not DVD-RW) and a GMA 950 graphics chip.
  7. 15" MBP: 9400M vs 9600M

    Thanks for the feedback StormPCs. I'll flip through the standard photo load at the Apple Store on both models to make sure there isn't lag or sluggishness in iPhoto. After that I'm ready to rock. Count me as one of the folks that was converted to Apple via OSx86. First ipods, then an Apple TV, then an Airport Extreme, then ipod touches, then the Mac Box Set (a must have for 'legit' OSx86 users) and now a 15" MBP. I'm stoked!
  8. With the WWDC behind us, I'm about to pull the trigger on a 15" MBP. I am struggling to make up my mind between the entry level 15" model and the model with the 256MB 9600M GT chip. Can anyone speak to the benefits, if any, that the 9600M GT would offer for pedestrian tasks like iLife, iTunes, iChat, DVD Player and Safari? I have a hand built PC for gaming, so I'm not overly concerned about maximizing fps in games. I'm inclined to go with the 9400M model if that is adequate for the uses I listed above. Thanks for any insight you can provide.
  9. This guide seems targeted at reducing the number of kexts needed for a retail install. If that is your objective, then I would recommend a Griffin imic for audio. Inputs and outputs work OOB with no kexts. If you want webcam capability OOB, then the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro is your (expensive) friend. The cam does all image processing (e.g. lighting correction, auto-focus) internally and does not require a driver (kext) to function as a high res camera in ichat or other applications.
  10. That might have been a minor modification, but it certainly makes the script more portable and idiot proof. Thanks a lot for your contribution. Not only does your script help people get Chameleon EFI up and running, but it makes it very easy to update an existing installation with new custom kernels, themes and kexts. I find myself tweaking Chameleon because the script makes it easy to do so! Thanks!

  12. Chameleon Dual Boot for Dummies The following guide is a reasonably simple approach for setting up a dual boot system on a single hard drive. This guide is written for OS X Leopard Retail and Windows 7 RC. It may also work for Vista, XP or various flavors of Linux. This was done by simply reading InsanelyMac (no new material here folks). Step 1: Downloads {a} Boot disk that supports your motherboard The easiest route is to download a pre-built boot CD for your motherboard. Forum member Sonotone has a nice thread where boot discs are collected (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=114834). The preferred route is to build your own boot CD using Galaxy’s slimbuild tool (also at the above link) {b} EFI-Boot-i386 tool (by CoolEdit) The download link is provided in CoolEdit’s thread (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=162580&st=0). Place this file with your Chameleon file. Please be careful when selecting a target drive to install Chameleon on. You need to know which device is which or you can disconnect the drives that you don't want affected. Step 2: Partitioning Disk0 Fire up Disk Utility and partition your drive as a GUID disk (GUID is selectable under Options) with 2 or more partitions. You may want more than two for things like another operating system or a data storage partition. Make the first partition HFS+ for Mac and the second FAT for Windows. You can get to Disk Utility using numerous approaches (e.g. another OS X installation on your computer or an OS X install disc). Step 3: Install Windows 7 Boot the Windows 7 install disc and go through the entire installation and setup process. You should reformat the FAT partition as NTFS during the Windows 7 installation. Be careful in choosing the partition to format. Reboot and verify that everything is functioning normally in Win7. Step 4: Install Mac OS X Boot the disc that you built in Step 1a. Hit [esc] and swap to your retail Leopard DVD, wait for the drive to spin up, then hit [enter] (hitting enter accepts the default boot device, which is the DVD). You can now proceed with your standard Leopard installation. The post-installation reboot will move you to Step 5, so be prepared. Step 5: Install Chameleon Reboot into OS X using the boot CD created in Step 1a. Hit [enter] instead of [esc] when prompted. Copy the EFI-Boot-i386 tool to your desktop (or other destination of your choosing) and unzip it. You have 2 choices for loading custom drivers here: {a} put a slimbuild CD in the computer, or {b} copy the kext files you need to the /Extensions folder within EFI-Boot-i386. Do not do both {a} and {b} (if you do, then option {a} will prevail). Option {a} is easiest and requires the least thought. Bring up a terminal (Go -> Utilities -> Terminal). The terminal dialogue is shown below.... Username$ sudo -s bash-3.2# cd Desktop/EFI-Boot-i386/ bash-3.2# ./Make-EFI-Boot-Now.sh <a whole lot of script text goes here -- see instructions below> bash-3.2# exit Username$ exit Press any key when you are prompted with “Are you sure you want this?”. Press any key when prompted to “Choose modus operandi”. Please select your destination device carefully. A single drive system will be disk0. You’ll see a bunch of script messages fly across the screen. You should be seeing a lot of “-SUCCESSFULLY-” messages. That’s it. You’re done. It should now be ready to dual boot. No need to fix the Win7 installation. You can run the EFI-Boot-i386 tool again if you ever want to add more drivers (kext files), change the Chameleon theme, install a custom kernel, or modify the boot.plist file. Just change the files within the EFI-Boot-i386 folder and then re-run EFI-Boot-i386 as shown in Step 5. Press "C" when prompted to "Choose a modus operandi", this will update your Chameleon EFI installation.
  13. I was unable to use the Chameleon RC1 EFI boot option on my system (specs in signature). I have my BIOS set to AHCI. Does AHCI cause a problem for this method? Do I need to change it back to IDE?
  14. Pre-made Chameleon Boot CD Like Boot-132

    I can boot to the Chameleon disk selection screen, switch discs, and re-scan. Attempting to boot the Leopard disc causes a quick black screen then transitions right back to the Chameleon disk selection screen. Perhaps my hardware isn't supported? Motherboard is an Asus P5B Deluxe (P965 chipset with ICH8R controller. Also has JMicron controller, but my disks are not attached to those ports).
  15. Pre-made Chameleon Boot CD Like Boot-132

    Quick and perhaps stupid question... How do you install Chameleon if your new retail OS X installation is not bootable due to lack of Chameleon and required kernel extensions? In the past I have installed Chameleon beta and now RC1 from a working OS X installation.
