  1. Never EVER run sysctl -w kern.maxproc=0 or ulimit -u 0 It does NOT set it to unlimited.
  2. which files are safe to delete?

If you aren't going to code, you can delete /Developer /Library /System /Applications /Users and the hidden folders, are all essential.
  3. How do Aqua Themes work?

Actually all of this can be done manually. It works on PPC the same as on x86. Well, maybe it's a little different.. but anyways. The generic file for Aqua is under /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/HIToolbox.framework/Resources/Extras*.rsrc The file for Finder's GUI is under /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/Localized.rsrc The iTunes GUI is in /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/Localized.rsrc Finder's icons are located in .. 3 places I believe. The Dock package, The Finder package, and CoreTypes.bundle (maybe) If you'd like to change your boot message for WaitingForLoginWindow you can edit a file, /System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/English.lproj/SystemStarterUI.strings And.. that's about it.
  4. Learning Darwin

Aah, Darwin. Play with it. Use man, and apropos. Read Apple docs ( though they are TECHNICAL.) try man man or man ls or something, read some pages, and play around. It has many GNU commands such as GNU ls, GNU dd.. a bunch of Apple commands. newfs, hdiutil, diskutil, disktool etcetera. Play around, it's fun.
