  1. I have been running various versions of osx dual booted with windows. Currently I have 10.5.8 with win7. A little while ago I updated iTunes to ver 9, what a mistake that was!, I can no longer just have one library on a shared partition and access it from windows & osx. I don’t let iTunes organise my files and I built the “iTunes Library.itl” file with windows then used ‘File Buddy’ to change an attribute to allow iTunes on osx access the file. I don’t need the File Buddy step any more because in iTunes9 creates the file in windows already with the right attribute and it will load in iTunes on osx. Problem is that even though my 120 odd GBs of music get listed ok, the location data is stuffed so itunes can’t find the file. My other problem is that I have never been able to add my media folder to a new iTunes library in osx. It runs for a while and freezes and it has done this on all of the various incarnations of osx releases I have had. So effectively iTunes no longer works on my hackintosh with any more than about 10% of my total media files. Anyone have any insights or ideas on this one?
  2. iATKOS 5i 10.5.5 Intel DVD

I just want say a big Thank You! iATKOS 5i 10.5.5 has installed perfectly on my rig. It took about 4 installs to get the options right but I now have a fully upgradable system. The combo 10.5.7 installed without a hitch. Prior to this release I have been running Kaliway but I couldn’t get it to update correctly after 10.5.5. The only thing that isn't working is the PC won't go to sleep but it shuts down ok. I can live with that. In Kaliway it would shut down but the fans kept running. I was a bit slack during the installs and didn’t record what customisations I used but I know I did follow all the directions to make an upgradable system and I didn’t select a custom kernal. I am a happy camper, iATKOS rocks!
  3. The short version of my problem - I had Leopard installed on a 15 Gb partition and was able to make and restore backup images of the OS X partition in BootIt NG. The resulting image files were an appropriate and manageable size, ie. the approx 7 Gb of used disk space made an image file of about 3.5 Gb. I needed a bigger Mac partition so I opted to reinstall onto a 50 Gb partition. Now my backup image files made with BootIt are over 35 Gb! even though the used disk space is still less than 7 Gb. What's gone wrong? The long version - Ok my problem started when I wanted to edit a 10 Gb video file in Leopard but I didn't have sufficient room in the home partition so I tried creating a new data partition formatted to Mac OS Extended Journaled. First I made room and created the partition as a Fat 32 with BootIt then formatted the new partition by erasing it in Disutility which formats it. This process trashed my partition table so that none of my 3 data partitions were visible in either OS X or Windows. Even when I deleted the new Mac partition I couldn't restore the earlier state. The best I can describe the situation is that there seemed to be a phantom primary partition within the extended partition which made more primaries than allowable. My first question is, how did the Disk Utility create a primary partition? There was no such option that I could see. Anyway for a time I was stuck, I tried a host of various partition tools to delete and create & check partitions so they would be visible again in OS X & Windows but I kept getting a variety of partition errors messages along the lines off "possible overlapping partitions" "too many primary partitions". Happily I was still able to see and backup the lost data partitions to another HDD with BootIt and then I tried to format the disk and start again. Even this didn't go smoothly. I used Fdisk, and other partition managers to try to create a workable partition setup I could build on. I spent half a day on it! For a while I thought my HDD had developed a permanent corruption. I finally had some success by first installing BootIt to the end of the HDD rather than at the beginning where I normally would have but which for some reason I wasn't able to do. I then created a primary 50 Gb partition for OS X at the beginning of the drive followed by another 50 Gb primary for WinXP and an extended partition into which I copied back by data partition backups. I adjusted the partition sizes to take up unallocated space and installed OS X & WinXP. the installs went smoothly, partitions are visible and everything is working as expected except, the OS X partition backups made with BootIt are way too big. Later I will try out Time machine backups onto a external drive but I would really like to understand what went wrong. Anyone got a clue for me?
  4. I am using this approach too very successfully. I have a dual boot system and am able to share the iTunes library file with Vista, XP & OS X. When I first installed iTunes and let it index my library, also without letting it change my preferred directory structure, I did it from the OSX and when I booted to Vista I renamed the iTunes Library file giving it the >.itl< extension and vista was able to open it and make changes and OSX is able use the same file. Too easy, I have come a small hitch though and need some advice, please read on. I have just turned on to iTunes after being introduced the to fantastic cover art flow feature and am only now revising all my meta data and embedding the cover artwork into a few 1000 tracks. Its a big job and requires refreshing the library multiple time to iron out errors and changes I've made. Winamp can refresh the database simply but with iTunes I find it best to just delete the iTunes directory and let it build a new one. Now what is happening lately is that in OSX iTunes stalls a few minutes into the adding folder process and never finishes so I do it with Vista. Surprisingly Vista does it quite quickly, it's the only thing Vista has ever done well for my, not my favourite OS. Now my problem is that iTunes in OSX won't recognise and open the 'ITunes library.itl' file until a 'file type' attribute is changed in it's properties. The only way I have learnt to do this is with a program called 'File Buddy' which is trail ware and can only be used 10 times or one month before needing to buy it. Does anyone know how I can change this attribute of the 'itunes library.itl' file in any other way? I don't want to buy an app that I only use for a tiny little function that I will only need to do very occasionally once I have my library tuned to perfection. If I find an alternative way I will write up a tutorial on the details of what I did because the ones I have read on web about sharing iTunes with Windows & Mac don't have the solution without letting ITunes organise your files.
  5. AHCI Fix After 10.5.3 update

I have just updated with the Kalyway_10.5.3_Combo and all seemed to go ok. I have lost my wireless adapter but that can probably be resotred from backup kexts. I am not sure I have a problem with my AHCI enabled hard drive. It boots ok but the icons of my hard drive partitions on the desktop are now orange, does that mean anything is not right and do I need to apply the fixes in this thread?
  6. Leopoard installed and working

Did you somehow permanently make it the default kernel or do you just type -sleepkernel at startup? I would love to know how to change the default kernel. Cheers
  7. [How To]Atheros AR5212 based cards, now w/ Leopard

    You have the same card as me but I can't get mine going and been trying for days. Could you plz post the text of your NetworkInterfaces.plist I have pasted mine below and as far as I can ses it's correct. The Airport card is on en1 Changing en0 for en1 earlier just resulted in my ethernet card showing up as the Airport card. I would love to find out what I have got wrong. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Interfaces</key> <array> <dict> <key>Active</key> <true/> <key>BSD Name</key> <string>en0</string> <key>IOBuiltin</key> <false/> <key>IOInterfaceType</key> <integer>6</integer> <key>IOInterfaceUnit</key> <integer>0</integer> <key>IOMACAddress</key> <data> ABjzdf+p </data> <key>IOPathMatch</key> <string>IOService:/AppleACPIPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/P0P7@1C,3/IOPCI2PCIBridge/ethernet@0/AttansicL1Ethernet/IOEthernetInterface</string> <key>SCNetworkInterfaceType</key> <string>Ethernet</string> </dict> <dict> <key>Active</key> <true/> <key>BSD Name</key> <string>en1</string> <key>IOBuiltin</key> <false/> <key>IOInterfaceType</key> <integer>6</integer> <key>IOInterfaceUnit</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>IOMACAddress</key> <data> AB0PteNx </data> <key>IOPathMatch</key> <string>IOService:/AppleACPIPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/P0P1@1E/IOPCI2PCIBridge/ethernet@1/AirPort_Athr5424/AtherosInterface</string> <key>SCNetworkInterfaceType</key> <string>IEEE80211</string> </dict> <dict> <key>Active</key> <true/> <key>BSD Name</key> <string>fw0</string> <key>IOBuiltin</key> <true/> <key>IOInterfaceType</key> <integer>144</integer> <key>IOInterfaceUnit</key> <integer>0</integer> <key>IOMACAddress</key> <data> ABHYAADoRjA= </data> <key>IOPathMatch</key> <string>IOService:/AppleACPIPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/P0P1@1E/IOPCI2PCIBridge/pci1106,3044@3/AppleFWOHCI/IOFireWireController/IOFireWireLocalNode/IOFireWireIP/IOFWInterface</string> <key>SCNetworkInterfaceType</key> <string>FireWire</string> </dict> </array> </dict> </plist>
  8. Atheros AR5005(G)

This is my first attempt at installing osx. When I first installed Kalway 10.5.2 and started to investigate why my Atheros cad wasn't working. I saw the 1080211Family.kext was listed in extensions in red and at one point following instructions from somewhere to run the kext it returned a 'bus error'. Now after following instructions at the beginning of this thread I have successfuly copied the 10.4.5 kext into the extensions folder and edited the networkinterfaces.plist changing en0 to en1. I got 'extension loaded successfully' and the airport icon shows up in Network however it won't start. I also notice that in the system info there are no PCI cards listed and my Atheros AR5005GS card is PCI. Can anyone advise what might be wrong with my setup at this stage?
  9. ISO burning tip

I am just new at osx86 stuff but I thought I should pass on a solution that worked for me. My first attempts at burning a couple of different releases Jas & Kalyway using Nero failed regardless of what speed they were burnt, I produced 5 coasters. At first I suspected the ISOs may have been corrupt but after checking that the hashs were what they should be I looked at what could be going wrong with the burns. I searched these forums but didn't not find an answer that worked. Then I tried dvddecrypter to do do the burning and haven't looked back, not a single one has failed. I hope this helps some of you.
