  1. Try that firmware reset thing where you press the Power button and immediately press and hold the Command, Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time . . .

    adi1968a sound card

Yes drag Azalia out of the way but keep it you may need to go back to it if things don't work out with the AC97 kext

It may be that the system isn't using the AC97 driver but is using Azalia instead. Open a terminal and type in kextstat to see what .kexts are being loaded.

Is my comuter SUPPOSED to be this slow?

The extra memory should certainly help. It's one of the best upgrades you can do.
  8. You have a boot disc it's the DVD you installed the OS from. Insert the Mac OS DVD and boot from it: Go on as if you intend to install and terminal should become available from the menu bar if you proceed far enough.

No Apple Logo and curious Yellow Letters

There's a file in /library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration called com.Apple.boot.plist inside it looks like this:- <key>Kernel</key> <string>mach_kernel</string> <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string></string> <key>Boot Graphics</key> <string>Yes</string> Edit the file so the lines look like they do above, you should then boot with the Apple screen etc.

    Intel Audio Drivers

I suppose the obvious question is "does the AC97 kext load"? do a kextstat in a terminal window to check

    iMac wont boot

Disconnect the computer from the mains supply for 30 seconds then reconnect and start up again. If that fails try the Apple Hrdware Test, is's available on Mac OS X install Disc 1 To run it start the machine with the Disc in while holding down the D key. Make sure any external devices are unplugged prior to running the Apple Hardware Test program (except keyboard and mouse). If the program displays any errors make a note of them and investigate your apple support options.

Did you remove AppleHDA.kext from within System/Library/Extensions? It has the same ID of 0x27D88086 in the Info.plist of AppleHDAController.kext which conflicts with the modified Azalia

    Best way to install?

Be generous and give each IDE device its own cable then set each device as Master. Or to answer your question: Yes
