  1. Now that really is cheaper than a mac mini. I'm gonna stick one in this LCII case I've got lying around. Now that's what you call "low cost"
  2. Boot Camp + VM ware. There is no argument, on mac you get both platforms, all the apps running concurrently. On my legit mac this works better than any PC I've used. Lots of people VMware plenty of virtual Windoze on top of Windoze to get better stability these days. Everything runs fine, no fuss. So the answer, basically is yes.
  3. [How To] Enable QuartzGL and Disable BeamSync on Leopard

    I'm hardly an Apple in-house systems engineer, I'm a user, but from what I understand from my reading, it works something like this. QuartzGL may not be so optimised at the moment. Your Graphics card may be not so hot. CPUs are really fast when munching up screen-res sized images. It may also be that the apps aren't optimised for QuartzGL either, and is having to effectively run the old code as well in order to translate into suitable Hardware Accelerated form. It may also be all of the above co-operating to make it sluggish. QuartzGL is not exactly off either. It's off by default. Applications which are compatible with it switch it on, and use it happily. Basically the data flow is that QuartzGL or Quartz non-GL (CPU flavour) feed into a natively OpenGL Compositing element of OSX. This whole process is called Core Image. Were you to do Quartz non-GL > QuartzGL > OpenGL Composite, then obviously this is less efficient. Chances are that when we get OpenCL in Snow Leopard, then all of the tasks can be passed to the GPU indiscriminately, and the card will just munch them raw, regardless of what you want. When you activate QuartzGL by default, all apps start using QuartzGL, not just the right apps. The bottom line: the software which uses it dynamically will run at the same speed. The software which predates the option to switch it on isn't written for it, and won't work any faster. In actual fact, it'll run slower. The CPU is having to do just the same work as before, running just the same code as before. I don't know which version of Xbench you're using. Chances are it's for testing current Macs, so the performance will obviously deteriorate when you switch on QuartzGL by default.
  4. Asus P5b-vm and Leopard

    That sounds very very sweet indeed. We're on ASUS P5B-VM DO QX6600 stock clock OCZ cheap vista upgrade RAM 2x 250GB Seagate Barracuda drives Pioneer DVR-212 Optical And it has been a nightmare getting it to boot the installer, we've had a bunch of images, and it hasn't been fun. We've been experiencing a few vague almost boots using SATA Pioneer Drive, and Kalyway. Hangs on boot from installer, "can't find boot disc on UUID address" bizness, occasionally some baud rate (very low) comms issues. We suspect that the issue is the southbridge controller being incompatible with the insaller boot. Going to try patching the installer with ICH8 kext. We're going to try using a USB external drive to boot, and perhaps mounting the hard disk over USB too to install onto. Apparently there is a Patch for ICH8 southbridge, PM for link, haven't got it handy on this mac. We're also going to give BrazilMac a go, since he used a P5K mobo to develop on. Any ideas about whether this is a good way to go? We are also planning on giving it a UNIX attack, using a DD command writing to the drive from an image to get the installer alive on a drive rather than a DVD, skipping the first 63 sectors of the image, and using GRUB as a bootloader rather than whatever is already on Kalyway. I get the feeling that a NIX approach might be favourable. Also, the EFI thing is clearly a good 'un, since that's true to the apple spec. Any help on this matter? We've got a partition on our drive which is 200MB, and comes up as EFI. What's it doing there? Any help most appreciated!! Feeling a bit Noob'd out.
  5. haha! maybe geekbench is not made by apple, but by geeks of an independent nature, and upon finding your rather non apple hardware flips over into a setting for hackintosh (ie: rather unidentified functioning object !
  6. (Almost) Hidden Secrets of OS X

    OK newbs, here's some stuff from OS 7.5. To access the folder structure back to the root (Mac HD) command click on the title bar of a finder window. in a finder window start typing the name of a file to select it. or use the arrow keys to select an item in the finder. To open hid Command down. To go back a level hit command up, to do either of these and close the window behind hold the option key. Keeps your fingers on the arrow keys for super fast file navigation. In list view in a finder window, hit command right to reveal folder contents, command left to close. Command option right reveals all folder contents. This works in dialogue boxes too. (it used to be in System 7.5 Cmd right and left to cycle disks, and Cmd up and down to open/close) Command option W closes all finder windows. Make clippings, rather than copy/paste to the clipboard. Drag a selection onto the desktop and keep it there. Some cool ones that appeared in OS8 When you drag something onto a folder/disc, hit space to open the folder's window up. Spring loaded baby. It don't work too good in X these days, too much weird tab bar stuff. Right click! On everything! Some OSX only useful finder tweaks Command Shift A selects applications tab You can also drag icons to the title bar! Put a regularly used navigation item like Adobe Bridge, Firefox or iPhoto next to the forward/back buttons. Then it's conceptually just another form of window. Object Oriented stuff is amazing isn't it. Say you have a folder open and you want to copy it. Just click and hold on the folder icon on the title bar, it should pull off. You can then put it where you like. To get rid of the weird windows style tab bar stuff on the side of the Finder window, hit Command option Tab. If you don't have a huge display this means you can see more stuff. Also, like an older finder window, it keeps all the windows you've seen open, rather than having a back button. To stop the screen from filling with finder windows, hold down the option key when opening : option doubleclick, cmd optionO, Cmd option down etc. You can stick folders on the dock provided that you put them to the right hand side of the line. Right click to get a menu. It's just like the old apple menu. Except more of them. And upside down. Stick your hard disc in it and browse it in submenus. Or your documents folder. Some Essential Photoshop tweaks that nobody knows but everybody should: Switch off all palettes : TAB Switch to fullscreen/fullscreen no menus : F This goes for Illustrator too. A little known QuarkXpress feature: hold command option shift delete with an object selected. An alien wanders on screen, and zaps your item with a raygun, and it disappears in a tacky orange gradient effect. I'm serious. It works in 3.3. I dunno if it's still there, i've defected to InDesign.
  7. New Intel Macs: iMac, MacBook Pro

    OK geek beefers, quit your cries of "I'm being ripped off!". Sure, I'd love to buy a screaming new apple laptop for $1600... but you forget : First law of economics : Price is determined by supply and demand. Small supply, big demand -> BIG price. Large supply, small demand -> small price. You can be 99.9% sure that for at least the first six months of this product's life there will be a waiting list of about a month to two weeks to get your hands on a MacBook. Think of all those Pro Powerbook owners who have just been given the opportunity for a 5 times faster speed bump. Actually, lets make that figure real world. Let's say only TWICE as fast. They will buy these machines. Especially Final Cut people. There'll be fights in the queues at Apple stores. People may die. Imagine this person: Mid '30s female TV documentary producer, working for a Cable Channel. She wants a computer for office stuff, and rough DV editing. What will she buy? Can she afford an extra couple of hundred $ for a better computer. Remember MHz is not better. Prettier, less headache, and fun to use makes 'Better'. Will this woman buy an Opteron Alienware notebook, and install a cracked version of OSX? I somehow doubt it. Will she buy a Dell Inspiron and run Avid? Not if every time she surfs the web she gets 15 pop up windows telling her she's got spyware, and the application icons stop working regularly. Apple's key to their success is that they've realised that 90% of the people who can find a use for a computer aren't interested in its technicalities. They don't want to be geeks. They just want the thing to do what they want it to with as little fuss as possible, and they're prepared to pay a premium not to have to fuss about it. These people vastly outnumber geeks. Apple isn't remotely worried about the hackers illegaly cracking OSX and running it on cheapo grey boxes at twice the speed of their production machines. These people are rare, and tend not to have much money. They're not a lucrative market. So this development is great for everybody. Geeks get OSX on whatever they want. Consumers get a computer that actually works properly, and is generally nice to them. We're all winners! Do also bear in mind when judging these new prices that as far as the CPU is concerned, Intel's 65nm chips are about 3 times the price of a G5.
