  1. I want to have apple updates! HELP!

Just out of curiosity, what is your main reason for installing Tiger over Leopard? I installed Kalyway 10.5.2, then upgraded all the way to 10.5.4, and after monitoring the Extensions folder to delete a certain kext during the combo update to 10.5.5, I then updated to 10.5.6 using the combo update direct from Apple without any modifications. I am now at 10.5.6 using a vanilla apple kernel and am able to do updates direct from the Software Update through Apple. I just don't see why anyone is still running Tiger unless you have a really old and crappy computer.
  2. Atheros AR5009 Wifi

Well, so far the earlier versions of the Atheros chipset are working, such as the Atheros AR5005G, but I have a Compaq CQ70-120US with the Atheros AR5009, and have not been able to get it to work with any of the workarounds and tutorials that have been successful on other Atheros chipset models. Everything on my laptop, including the built-in webcam, works perfectly, so the only major hurdles I have is getting the Wifi to work and higher resolutions than 1024x768 on the Intel GMA 4500MHD Graphics card. Any help on steps others have taken to get Atheros AR5009 Wifi to work would be greatly appreciated.

  4. Well, I say OS "EX", and frankly, if Steve Jobs really cared what people called it, as stated earlier, he would not have come up with XServe and XCode, because they are not pronounced 10Server and 10Code. Personally, I believe if you asked Steve if it was wrong to say "EX" he would say no. They broke that naming convention when they started making software that was pronounded with the "EX" sound (XServer, XCode, etc) and although X is a roman numeral, it is also a letter of the english alphabet, so Steve isn't so stupid that he would not have forseen that some people were eventually going to call it OS "EX". The name sells, as a roman numeral or a letter, Apple is simply thankful that everyone enjoys the operating system. The "X" in OS X was not something intelligent guys dreamed up to relive the hayday of Roman Numerals. It was the first Apple OS to run on UNI"X" and at the time of the first 10.0 release on PPC, they were already developing a copy for "X"86 architecture, which its commonly refered to as "Intel Architecture" or "IBM Architecture" for those that want to use vanila terms rather than the literal. So you see, the "X" has many reasons for being in the name of OS X, so both ways of pronouncing it are acceptable. A final note, to those "Apple Old School Cool Folks" who think they are better than the rest of us, I'll have you know I have been a developer for UNIX, LINUX and AmigaOS since the days when Apple's operating system was nothing but an over hyped software program. Such a joke that it couldn't even be classified as an OS. Apple never had a decent OS until it switched to UNIX with OS X, so those that think OS9 was a great achievment, you can get off your high horse. Some of us have been building, coding and breaking computers before a lot of you even owned a computer, because you were either not even born or your mother was still wiping your little nose, so don't even think about SMIRKING at me when I say OS "EX". "Old School" is for those of us that were around at the turning points of computer technology... those of us that know what a dial-up BBS system is when we used 300 and 1200 Baud Modems through a serial hookup because we didn't have ISA cards... don't know what they are? Thats before PCI cards came about. Yeah, I'm talking about a time when the Internet was unheard of outside of the US Governement because it was still a secured, private network. A lot of you can't even imagine a world without the Internet.. but amazingly enough, it wasn't always around. I am OLD SCHOOL, and I'll smirk at any punk that dirties the meaning of that name by referring to it in reference to Apple. By the way, I like Steve Jobs... he is a brilliant man who was on the cutting edge while Microcrap was sneaking and stealing ideas, but to say anything that came out of Apple from the time Microcrap released Windows 95 up until Apple finally came out with OS X is laughable. Anyway, that is my II cents on that topic. You see, even I can use roman numerals.
  5. Thanks to both of you... great news (even if a bit outdated.... guess I need to keep up more)
  6. Haxies for macintel

Doubtful that someone is going to be more informed than the developers... if they haven't posted any time frame on their site, how on earth would any of us know more? I know that running OS X makes more of us feel empowered, and maybe even a bit smarter but it hasn't made any of us clairvoyant, as far as I know However, if you look at their website, they do point you to their blog which has an Intel BETA version of Shapeshifter: http://www.unsanity.org/
  7. Well, being that your problem is with Flash plugin, then why would you think that you would have to remove Safari? Come on man... think! besides, someone said the Flash plugin is fine and your problem is that you are trying to view a site that is using Shockwave, which is not the same thing... there 2 plugsins, Flash and Shockwave... Flash is native, Shockwave is not. I don't know if that you are indeed trying to see a shockwave page or a flash page, but in either case, uninstall your flash and/or shockwave plugins and try again. Mainly your problem is you are running on OLD version of hackintosh... upgrade to 10.4.7 or 10.4.8 instead of wondering why things aren't working with your old version.
  8. That is normal.. mine shows 2 x 3.0ghz when I only have the single cpu. Well, one of 2 things is going on here... 1) You are not using shapeshifter but some other similar program, or... 2) you are running a genuine Intel Mac and telling us all that you are using a hackintosh so you can feel like part of the crowd. Now I see your screenshot shows "Unknown" for the CPU, so that would mean that you are running hackintosh, but Shapeshifter requires "Application Enhancer" which currently runs on PPC only. Intel version is in the works, but not available. So, unless you know of a hack around for Shapeshifter that you can share with the rest of us, or another program that does the same thing as Shapeshifter, I don't see how you can possibly be running it on your hackintosh.
  9. I don't know about that error, however, you should never have replaced your mount_smbfs file. I am not sure if the mount_smbfs is different for the 10.4.8 than for 10.4.7 Update, but since it stopped the error message, I would say it was different. The first thing you should do is samba fix included with the postflight from the JaS update. If you execute the postflight script at a command line or edit it with a text editor and just follow the steps at a command line, it should fix your samba problem. If that doesn't work, I would use the smbfx.kext and the mount_smbfs from 10.4.6 (I can get them to you if you need them, just PM me) and then run the shell steps included with the postflight script to repair it for 10.4.8
  10. Well, no real reason... I mean many people today are still running Panther (10.3) and refuse to even upgrade to 10.4 at all. Personally, if there are no ill effects with the JaS upgrade, I'd install it. No sense hanging back with 10.4.7 for the next 10 months waiting for Leopard. As I have heard, I think this update was suppose to Finder fixes and performance, some fixes with certain software programs like word and includes the most resent security fixes, in case you didn't install the last patched fix I guess. Not sure how much of that relies on the extensions that were removed with this patched update, but again, no reason not to update if it has no adverse effects.
  11. Well, finally got it downloaded and installed... was sweating bullets for a minute when my system didn't restart right away, but everyone came back up, and the "About This Mac" from the Apple Menu boomed the numbers "10.4.8" Everything seems to be running... VirtueDesktops has a glitch in displaying all of the desktop names overlapping each other on the primary display, but that is a problem I had in the past with a pervious version... I think its something even retail Mac users get after 10.4.8 rather than an adverse effect of the JaS upgrade. Once again, up to date and as happy as could be expected. Thanks again JaS... I don't know how you keep pulling it off amid all the bad mojo people keep throwing about like, "Well, I guess the fun is over... 10.4.7 is it for us... 10.4.8 can't be hacked" You just keep proving them wrong at every turn... not sure how, but all you will get from my neck of the woods is applause and praise.
  12. For those of you who have already downloaded and installed the update... let us know how it went... did you have any problems? Of course if the system didn't boot, some of you may not be able to get back here to post anything
  13. Mac OS 10 x86 PROBLEM! help?

Oh DUH... my mind is toast... why didn't I pick-up on that? uh, yeah, I'd say format reinstall was the right answer then.
  14. I wasn't referring to the JaS DVD install... I was talking about the JaS 10.4.8 update patch which came out just tonight after the Kiko Combo RC2 update patch was already screwing up peoples systems.
  15. My only advice at this point... DON'T REBOOT YET... I would definately install JaS upgrade over the top of Kiko before rebooting, as any problems you have with the Kiko update 9 times out of 10 will keep your system from restarting. Again, this will not ensure your system will boot back up, but I can almost guarantee you that you will have a higher precentage chance of a clean reboot after installing JaS update.
