  1. Hi all, A mate of mine has built a pc as close to the HW compat list as possible. His system is as follows:- "amd 64 3200 asus A8N-SLI deluxe m/b gigabyte pci-e GV-NX66256DP gfx card maxtor ide 300g/b h/d maxtor 120 g/b h/d pioneer dvd r/w" He can install Ubuntu64 and XP64 just fine, but when he tried installing osx86 it dies at the end of the gui installation with 'installation failed, try again'. Installer fails no matter what combination of packages he chooses. his blurb: "it fails at various points sometimes during the actual install and sometimes when you are trying to select components to install it just dies" <edit> he gets this error text within log, using sse3 patch:- "BomFatalError cpio read error: bad file format Install failled: some files for AMD.SSE3 may not have been written correctly" i have found similar topics on board related to the BomFatalError message, but none seem to have solutions </edit> If any further info needed please let me know, hoping someone here has a similar setup & knows the score. Cheers :-)
  2. Mac OSX 10.4.4 HOTISO Boot PROBLEM

    ahh gutted, cheers :-)
  3. Mac OSX 10.4.4 HOTISO Boot PROBLEM

    I get very similar messages when attempting to install 10.4.6 on an athlon 2200, "Local APIC version not 0x14 as expected" "Debigger called: <panic> Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potencial args on stack) 0xa4b3ee0 : 0x128aea (0x3b9dcc 0xa4b3f04 0x130c94 0x0) 0xa4b3f20 : 0x19cffc (0x3bf434 0xa4b3f7c 0x13000 0x0) 0xa4b3fb0 : 0x1a1427 (0x135eff 0x1 0x7 0x0) 0xa4b3fd4 : 0x196b69 (0x0 0xffffffff 0x4431f8 0x49b800) Backtrace terminated - invalid frame pointer 0x0" ..no solution to such problems has been found as of yet?
  4. OSx86 for actual work

ooh, it would seem i have been misinformed then! and with logic apparently working seamlessly, its become a hundred fold more interesting for me cheers!

  6. Who here has a mac? not just a PC

my god stryder, you could open a hall of fame/museum and charge fanboys £10 a ticket! ;D
  7. Whether this has been asked before, i don't know, but i'm curious, and i know that this is obviously too early to forsee in some respects, but i still find myself asking the question; how long will it be until OSx86 (whether it be the 'hacked' - for want of a better term - version or the retail) can actually be put to good use? I'm not talking itunes and web browsing, but proper work; Logic, Photoshop, etc etc. Word on the grapevine is that it will be an awful long time before Logic for OSx86 is at a suitable stage to deem switching. slightly offtopic, but i'm in love with the possibility of being able to produce on both platforms, on the same box, taking advantage of AU only & Windows only plugins, switching between them as & when needed
  8. Who here has a mac? not just a PC

    dual 2ghz g5 / 2gb / fx5200 & a lovely new 17" g4 powerbook / 2gb. still got my pc sat in a cupboard, used as a server, controlled via vnc.
  9. Would you buy a Apple Mactel?

dear god. i registered just to reply to this. the combination of the dock & the apple menu offers much faster application & system configuration than the windows start menu does. just add shortcuts to the dock, or indeed to the apple menu (via a haxie - www.haxies.com). as others have said, expose is a more efficient means of task selection. multiple windows of the same application can be SEEN and easily indentified, as opposed to churning through dozens of tiny taskbar buttons. the animations you see when you minimize a window are NOT just eye candy - they show you exactly where the window is sent on the dock. and of course, dont forget alt+tab. you miss commands like ctrl+copy? these are all present in os x! how its translated to osx86 i dont know, but its just as simple as windows, apple+c for copy, apple+v to paste, etc etc etc. you really ought to test things a bit more before trolling. in regards to windows xp being faster than os x, that all comes down to your hardware, and apparently the proper release of osx86 will be faster than the ppc versions we see now. rant over. personally im both happy and sad about the mactel platform, sad because i coughed up for both a powerbook and a g5 just weeks before the move was announced, but happy to see the possibilities this new move will bring. i'd buy one, perhaps a later revision, when my current macs are really, really outdated. toodle pip! blimey govenor! i never knew that! thanks a lot
