    Dell XPS 410 Resource Extravaganza

Hey guys, It's been a while since i've installed OSX on my XPS 410 (i'm currently still on 10.5.5..!!) but the time has come to reinstall and I now need 10.6.8 on it. I'm a bit out of touch with the current methods of installation and was hoping for a little guidance. I would like to know which bootloader, efi, etc to use. Does it make a big difference if I have a 'vanilla' installation? How do I update to 10.6.8 once i've installed snow leopard? Does anyone have all of the necessary drivers/kexts for the 410? Was the issue with the on board Ethernet ever resolved? A step by step guide would be amazing..!! :-) My spec is: Standard XPS 410 motherborad Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 4GB Ram nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS - works under 10.5.5 Generic PCI Ethernet card - works under 10.5.5 (Can't remember if kext needed or chipset) Adaptec Firewire 400 card - works under 10.5.5 (Can't remember if kext needed. Agere Chipset) Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, i've got a problem and could really use some help. I've just downloaded kalyway 10.5.2 and it installs fine. But when I try the kalyway 10.5.3 update and follow the instruction from: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=108216 I can't get past sudo -s Every time I type this command i get 'try again' when I try to type in my password. I have tried reinstalling 2-3 times and still the same problem. - it just won't take my password. - also, if I try to access system preferences after trying this, the computer freezes. If I ignore this and reboot with 'update -v' I get 'waiting for root device'. PLEASE HELP!!!! - BTW I have a Dell Dimension 9200, 4GB RAM, Q6600 (QUAD CORE). - I also have leo4all v3 which I have patched from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3, but I can't even get into the installer with this disk - just get stuck on 'waiting for for device' error..

piece of advice to anyone using software which requires challenge and response athorisation.. just before christmas i put a realtek nic into my pc as a stop-gap, while i wait for the kext from bigdaddyrob.. when i started working on music again with it in january, i discovered that some of my software had stopped working and required me to reauthorise it.. i have just spent the last few days doing this - and it was a real pain in the ass!!!! the software in question had tied itself to the id of one of the chips in pc - usually the processor and/or the MAC address of an ethernet adapter - and had decided to change to my new network card.. if i decide to remove the card when the kext is avaliable, i will have to do this all over again.. things get worse.. some software now refuses to work at all.. it is trying to be smart and thinks that i have just copied it to a different machine - since it is detecting new hardware ids - and refuses to authorise using the orginal keygens.. my advice - if you are using pro software that requires keygens - is to think carefully before add/removing any network adapters..

OK.. I think i solved the USB issue.. I think that macam driver is the problem.. Does anyone know of a cheap webcam that functions at a decent framrate with the macam driver? The Logitech Quickcam chat I just bought should run at 30fps, but only runs at about 5fps with macam.. Cheers.. Sorry can't help.. My 8139 - which i bought for £6 - works straight out of the box.. Just hang in there.. I'm sure the kext will arrive soon..

Can you guys tell me what you did to get it running USB 2.0.. ..BTW I'm running uphuck 1.4i r3 (10.4.9) cheers.. ..also, just tried AppleHDApatcher and dump for the 9227, but can''t get the mic to work.. has anyone managed to get it to work?

does anyone have VMM (Virtual Machine Monitoring) turned on in their bios? I have it turned off, and parallels says that it is running in 'software mode2'.. when i turn VMM on, parellels says that it is using full/hardware virtualisation - or something like that.. the only problem, is that my system become unstable with VMM turned on.. i'm kinda thinking that i may need to reinstall osx with VMM turned on to get it to work - like when windows is installed with hyperthreading it only installs the hal that it matches the hardware description it detects.. if you disable hyperthreading then it will installl a version of windoes that doesn't support it.. BTW i'm using uphuck 10.4.9 1.4i r3 and i have a Dimension 9200 Quad w/4GB ram..
  12. More and more manufacturers of low cost RAID solutions are writing OSX drivers for their products and more and more PC manufacturers are selling cost PCs with RAID 0/1 configurations (like my Dell Dimension 9200).. This Topic will document their progress and success stories of people using their cards in their hackintoshes.. ROCKETRAID 2310 OSX DRIVER http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/rr2310.htm SILICON IMAGE OSX DRIVER http://www.siliconimage.com/support/suppor...id=2&osid=3 ARECA OSX DRIVER http://www.areca.com.tw/ and ftp://ftp.areca.com.tw/RaidCards/AP_Drivers/MacOS/ My personal opinion - loosely supported by the areca mac pro issue - is that currently avaliable raid cards won't boot in mac pros, but work once a driver, is loaded because they use EFI - which the raid cards do not recognise.. But.. because we are all using PCs, which in turn use BIOS, it stands to reason that some of these cards should be able to boot an OSX partition in the same way that Windows and a hacked OSX install are.. ..I've just dicovered this review: http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/rev...es/areca/1680x/ ..which states that areca have released a firmware update for one (or some) of their cards to allow it to boot OSX on a Mac Pro..
  13. after doing a bit more research it seems that the reason that the rocketraid cards won't boot in a mac pro is because mac pros use efi and not bios.. this is only a theory, but if you look here: http://www.techmessenger.com/Apple-OS-X-Le...-071106002.html ..it seems that Areca have had similar problems. It seems to me that currently avaliable raid cards, with osx drivers, 'should' be able to be bootable in pcs as long as osx 'takes over' with an apropriate driver, when it starts to load... Again, this is only a theory - and i really need someone with a proper hardware raid card and osx drivers to try this out..
  14. thanks kingskawn.. im sure that the apple raid card is very expensive.. the rocketraid card is only $160/£99 and supports osx.. on their site they say that booting is not posible in a NORMAL mac, but since i'm using a pc i'm thinking that it could be possible - since you can boot into pretty much any other OS using it.. i basically need a harware RAID controller.. but i want to buy something that i KNOW works and that someone has already got working..
  15. So.. has anyone actually managed to get osx to boot off ANY raid.. if so which raid controller do you use? The problem that i have is that i have an intel raid (ich8r/ich9r) (sata II) with 2 320 gb drives attached and a single sata II 500 gb drive and i need speed and data protection for my operating systems and for all of my music production data.. The intel raid won't work with osx, for obvious reasons, and to be fair i'm having doubts as too how good it really is.. What i want to do is to have the 320 gb drives as a 640gb RAID 0 set (Striped) - for tiger, leopard and vista - and buy another 500 gb drive and combine it with the one that i already have and have them set up as a 500gb RAID 1 set (mirrored) - for music production data.. Any help would be extremely appreciated.. Thanks..
